2020 Can Do Colorado E-Bike Mini Pilot Program Study

### The Colorado Energy Office conducted a mini pilot program study as part of the Can Do Colorado initiative, providing e-bikes to 13 low-income participants. The program aimed to encourage energy-efficient transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic as transit services were reduced and people were concerned about exposure. The insights garnered from this small-scale pilot study informed the design of a full-scale, 2-year pilot in locations across Colorado. For more information about the mini pilot program, see NLR's [Preliminary Results Report](https://www.nlr.gov/docs/fy21osti/79657.pdf). Micromobility options such as e-bikes offer a solution for improving energy efficiency for short-distance trips, especially in urban areas. Pedal-assist e-bikes use an electric motor and battery to help power the bike. The motor amplifies the power behind each pedal stroke, augmenting the energy you put into the bike. #### Data Collection Agency The Colorado Energy Office conducted the survey. #### Survey Methodology Participants in the program received a Momentum LaFree E+ e-bike (Class 1) and accessories at no cost and manually submitted travel data and feedback for 3 months using the CanBikeCo App. The smartphone app, developed in partnership with NLR, used a customized version of the [NLR OpenPATH platform](https://www.nlr.gov/transportation/openpath.html). #### Survey Records and Data Survey records include a total of 13 participants. This dataset contains 3 months of end-to-end, multimodal travel data manually submitted via smartphone app by 13 low-income essential workers in the greater Denver area. The data includes distance, mode (e.g., e-bike, car, transit), trip purpose, and demographic information.

Seismic Monitoring near Ithaca, New York, Reveals Nonuniform Distribution of Microseismicity in an Intraplate Region

Abstract Cornell University intends to use a deep direct-use geothermal system to heat its Ithaca, New York, campus. In preparation for this project, the Cornell Seismic Network has been monitoring the background seismicity in this intraplate region since 2019. From January 2020 to June 2023, 95 events were detected within 20 km of the proposed geothermal well site, with local magnitudes ranging from −1.02 to 0.56. None of these events appear in regional or national catalogs. Events locate in a narrow geographic band, with one-fourth exhibiting multimodal hypocentral probability peaks both near the surface and at 1–4 km depth. We relocate events with a joint hypocenter and 1D velocity model inversion, in addition to a fully nonlinear method, and then compare observations with synthetic waveforms. Together, these approaches provide strong evidence for >95% of events locating at the surface or within the 3-km-thick sedimentary sequence. We explore how anthropogenic activity and regional topographic stress may contribute to frequent surficial events. This information is critical for characterizing the background microseismicity for comparison during future geothermal operations. Ithaca’s geology of Paleozoic sediments overlying Precambrian crystalline basement is typical of many continental interiors, so these results also provide insight into intraplate microseismicity patterns.

Toward particle accelerator machine state embeddings as a modality for large language models

Understanding and diagnosing the state of a particle accelerator requires navigating high-dimensional control system data, often involving hundreds of interdependent parameters. We propose a novel multimodal embedding framework that jointly learns representations of machine states from both numerical control system readouts and natural language descriptions. This enables the translation of complex machine conditions into human-readable summaries while maintaining fidelity to the underlying physical system. The obtained embeddings are subsequently adapted to an open-weights large language model via cross-attention conditioning. We demonstrate a first implementation trained on European XFEL machine state data. This work covers the embedding model architecture, training methodology, and presents initial examples demonstrating the model's capabilities in action. Due to the general concept of machine state, the model can be easily adapted to other facilities and control system environments.

U.S. Freight Transload Facilities Dataset

The U.S. Freight Transload Facilities Dataset provides location information (latitude, longitude, zip, city, county, state)for more than 9,000 facilities across 50 U.S. States where freight may be transferred between waterways, railways, and roadways. The dataset lists the known modes and available direction(s) for freight transfers at each facility as of 2024. The U.S. Freight Transload Facilities dataset was built by mining and fusing several public sources, such as the USACE Master Docks Plus, the USDOT National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD), files from the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), and the industry publication Bulk Transloader. The dataset constitutes a key piece of a multimodal freight transportation network and routing algorithm developed by USACE-ERDC. The dataset is shared as a .csv file. The dataset is published for research purposes and should not be considered exhaustive or authoritative.

Exploring New Diamond Surfaces with Precision Chemistry and Quantum Spectroscopy

Point defects in diamond known as color centers are a promising platform for quantum sensing. As atom-like systems, they can exhibit excellent spin coherence and can be manipulated with light. As solid-state defects, they can be produced at high densities and be incorporated into scalable devices. Diamond is a uniquely excellent host; it has a large band gap, can be synthesized with sub-ppb impurity concentrations, and can be isotopically purified to eliminate magnetic noise from nuclear spins. Specifically, the nitrogen vacancy (NV) center has been demonstrated to be a highly sensitive, non-invasive magnetic probe capable of resolving the magnetic field of a single electron spin with nanometer spatial resolution. However, the development of NV centers and other color centers in diamond as a quantum platform crucially relies on developing methods to functionalize and process diamond surfaces. Diamond is the hardest material, making polishing and processing challenging, and diamond surfaces are inert and sterically hindered, making them notoriously difficult to chemically terminate and functionalize. Our approach is to discover new surface chemistries for diamond by combining multimodal surface spectroscopy with NV-based quantum spectroscopy to carefully characterize the diamond surface. We have developed a suite of techniques for characterizing the diamond surface using rapid tools for reaction screening and detailed surface spectroscopy tools for definitive identification of the surface bonding.

Neutral rhenium(i) tricarbonyl complexes with sulfur-donor ligands: anti-proliferative activity and cellular localization

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes are widely studied for their cell imaging properties and anticancer and anti-microbial activities, but the complexes with S-donor ligands remain relatively unexplored. A series of six fac-[Re(NN)(CO) 3 (SR)] complexes, where (NN) is 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), and RSH is a series of thiocarboxylic acid methyl esters, have been synthesized and characterized. Cellular uptake and anti-proliferative activities of these complexes in human breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) were generally lower than those of the previously described fac-[Re(NN)(CO) 3 (OH 2 )] + complexes; however, one of the complexes, fac-[Re(CO) 3 (phen)(SC(Ph)CH 2 C(O)OMe))] (3b), was active (IC 50 ~ 10 μM at 72 h treatment) in thiol-depleted MDA-MB-231 cells. Moreover, unlike fac- [Re(CO) 3 (phen)(OH 2 )] + , this complex did not lose activity in the presence of extracellular glutathione. Taken together these properties show promise for further development of 3b and its analogues as potential anti-cancer drugs for co-treatment with thiol-depleting agents. Conversely, the stable and non-toxic complex, fac-[Re(bipy)(CO) 3 (SC(Me)C(O)OMe)] (1a), predominantly localized in the lysosomes of MDA-MB-231 cells, as shown by live cell confocal microscopy (λ ex = 405 nm, λ em = 470-570 nm). It is strongly localized in a subset of lysosomes (25 μM Re, 4 h treatment), as shown by co-localization with a Lysotracker dye. Longer treatment times with 1a (25 μM Re for 48 h) resulted in partial migration of the probe into the mitochondria, as shown by co-localization with a Mitotracker dye. These properties make complex 1a an attractive target for further development as an organelle probe for multimodal imaging, including phosphorescence, carbonyl tag for vibrational spectroscopy, and Re tag for X-ray fluorescence microscopy.

Towards Unlocking Insights from Logbooks Using AI

Electronic logbooks contain valuable information about activities and events concerning their associated particle accelerator facilities. However, the highly technical nature of logbook entries can hinder their usability and automation. As natural language processing (NLP) continues advancing, it offers opportunities to address various challenges that logbooks present. This work explores jointly testing a tailored Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) model for enhancing the usability of particle accelerator logbooks at institutes like DESY, BESSY, Fermilab, BNL, SLAC, LBNL and CERN. The RAG model uses a corpus built on logbook contributions and aims to unlock insights from these logbooks by leveraging retrieval over facility datasets, including discussion about potential multimodal sources. Our goals are to increase the FAIR-ness (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) of logbooks by exploiting their information content to streamline everyday use, to enable macro-analysis for root cause analysis, and to facilitate problem-solving automation.
