Phonon spectrum in the spin-Peierls phase of CuGeO 3

CuGeO 3 has long been studied as a prototypical example of the spin-Peierls transition in a 𝑆 = 1/2 Heisenberg chain. Despite intensive investigation of this quasi-one-dimensional material, systematic measurements and calculations of the phonon excitations in the dimerized phase have not to date been possible, leaving certain aspects of the spin-Peierls phenomenon unresolved. We perform state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) calculations to compute the electronic structure and phonon dynamics in the low-temperature dimerized phase. We also perform high-resolution neutron spectroscopy to measure the full phonon spectrum over multiple Brillouin zones. We find excellent agreement between our numerical and experimental results that extend to all measurement temperatures. Notable features of our phonon spectra include a number of steeply dispersive modes, nonmonotonic dispersion features, and specific phonon anticrossings, which we relate to the mode eigenvectors. By calculating the magnetic interactions within DFT and studying the effects of different phonon modes on the superexchange paths, we discuss the possibility of observing spin-phonon hybridization effects in experiments performed both in and out of equilibrium.

Multiplicity-dependent production of Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The production yields of the Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 resonances are measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with ALICE. The measurements are performed as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity $\langle$dN ch /dη$\rangle$, which is related to the energy density produced in the collision. The results include transverse momentum (p T ) distributions, p T - integrated yields, mean transverse momenta of Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 , as well as ratios of the p T - integrated resonance yields relative to yields of other hadron species. The Σ(1385) ± /π ± and Ξ(1530) 0 /π ± yield ratios are consistent with the trend of the enhancement of strangeness production from low to high multiplicity pp collisions, which was previously observed for strange and multi-strange baryons. The yield ratio between the measured resonances and the long-lived baryons with the same strangeness content exhibits a hint of a mild increasing trend at low multiplicity, despite too large uncertainties to exclude the flat behaviour. The results are compared with predictions from models such as EPOS-LHC and PYTHIA 8 with Rope shoving. The latter provides the best description of the multiplicity dependence of the Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV.

Search for jet quenching effects in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV via di-jet acoplanarity

The ALICE Collaboration reports a search for jet quenching effects in high-multiplicity (HM) proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, using the semi-inclusive azimuthal-difference distribution Δφ of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high-p T,trig ) trigger hadron. Jet quenching may broaden the Δφ distribution measured in HM events compared to that in minimum bias (MB) events. The measurement employs a p T,trig -differential observable for data-driven suppression of the contribution of multiple partonic interactions, which is the dominant background. While azimuthal broadening is indeed observed in HM compared to MB events, similar broadening for HM events is observed for simulations based on the PYTHIA 8 Monte Carlo generator, which does not incorporate jet quenching. Detailed analysis of these data and simulations show that the azimuthal broadening is due to bias of the HM selection towards events with multiple jets in the final state. The identification of this bias has implications for all jet quenching searches where selection is made on the event activity.

A future of inertial confinement fusion without laser-plasma instabilities

From the beginning of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) research, laser-plasma instabilities excited by narrowband lasers have limited the hydrodynamic design space of all laser-based approaches to inertial fusion energy (IFE). With advances in broadband laser technologies, the next generation of ICF drivers will likely have large bandwidth that is engineered to mitigate laser-plasma instabilities, thereby expanding the hydrodynamic design space to include both robust high yields (>200−MJ) with large-energy laser systems (>4 MJ) and high gains (>10) with moderate-energy laser facilities (<2 MJ). State-of-the-art simulations indicate that laser bandwidths of a few percent are required to mitigate instabilities for IFE-relevant conditions. To test these models and demonstrate that high-bandwidth lasers mitigate laser-plasma instabilities, the Fourth-generation Laser for Ultrabroadband eXperiments will be used with the OMEGA Laser System. The goal is to provide the community with the confidence to invest in a multiple-beam high-bandwidth laser facility that will demonstrate the necessary ablation pressures for robust direct-drive ignition without detrimental levels of hot electrons that degrade the implosion performance. It is important to recognize that the highest performing ICF implosions will likely never be completely LPI free because of the significant advantages to maximizing the laser intensity.

X-ray imaging and electron temperature evolution in laser-driven magnetic reconnection experiments at the national ignition facility

We present results from x-ray imaging of high-aspect-ratio magnetic reconnection experiments driven at the National Ignition Facility. Two parallel, self-magnetized, elongated laser-driven plumes are produced by tiling 40 laser beams. A magnetic reconnection layer is formed by the collision of the plumes. A gated x-ray framing pinhole camera with micro-channel plate detector produces multiple images through various filters of the formation and evolution of both the plumes and current sheet. As the diagnostic integrates plasma self-emission along the line of sight, two-dimensional electron temperature maps ⟨Te⟩Y are constructed by taking the ratio of intensity of these images obtained with different filters. The plumes have a characteristic temperature ⟨Te⟩Y=240 ± 20 eV at 2 ns after the initial laser irradiation and exhibit a slow cooling up to 4 ns. The reconnection layer forms at 3 ns with a temperature ⟨Te⟩Y=280 ± 50 eV as the result of the collision of the plumes. The error bars of the plumes and current sheet temperatures separate at 4 ns, showing the heating of the current sheet from colder inflows. Using a semi-analytical model, we survey various heating mechanisms in the current sheet. We find that reconnection energy conversion would dominate at low density (ne≲7×1018 cm−3) and electron-ion collisional drag at high-density (≳1019 cm−3).

Measurement of differential ZZ + jets production cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Diboson production in association with jets is studied in the fully leptonic final states, pp → (Z/γ$^{*}$)(Z/γ$^{*}$) + jets → 2ℓ2ℓ′ + jets, (ℓ, ℓ′ = e or μ) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Differential distributions and normalized differential cross sections are measured as a function of jet multiplicity, transverse momentum p$_{T}$, pseudorapidity η, invariant mass and ∆η of the highest-p$_{T}$ and second-highest-p$_{T}$ jets, and as a function of invariant mass of the four-lepton system for events with various jet multiplicities. These differential cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions that mostly agree with the experimental data. However, in a few regions we observe discrepancies between the predicted and measured values. Further improvement of the predictions is required to describe the ZZ+jets production in the whole phase space.

Studying strangeness and baryon production mechanisms through angular correlations between charged Ξ baryons and identified hadrons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The angular correlations between charged Ξ baryons and associated identified hadrons (pions, kaons, protons, Λ baryons, and Ξ baryons) are measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector to give insight into the particle production mechanisms and balancing of quantum numbers on the microscopic level. In particular, the distribution of strangeness is investigated in the correlations between the doubly-strange Ξ baryon and mesons and baryons that contain a single strange quark, K and Λ. As a reference, the results are compared to Ξπ and Ξp correlations, where the associated mesons and baryons do not contain a strange valence quark. These measurements are expected to be sensitive to whether strangeness is produced through string breaking or in a thermal production scenario. Furthermore, the multiplicity dependence of the correlation functions is measured to look for the turn-on of additional particle production mechanisms with event activity. The results are compared to predictions from the string-breaking model P YTHIA 8, including tunes with baryon junctions and rope hadronisation enabled, the cluster hadronisation model H ERWIG 7, and the core-corona model E POS-LHC . While some aspects of the experimental data are described quantitatively or qualitatively by the Monte Carlo models, no model can match all features of the data. These results provide stringent constraints on the strangeness and baryon number production mechanisms in pp collisions.

Search for dark QCD with emerging jets in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for “emerging jets” produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is performed using data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. This search examines a hypothetical dark quantum chromodynamics (QCD) sector that couples to the standard model (SM) through a scalar mediator. The scalar mediator decays into an SM quark and a dark sector quark. As the dark sector quark showers and hadronizes, it produces long-lived dark mesons that subsequently decay into SM particles, resulting in a jet, known as an emerging jet, with multiple displaced vertices. This search looks for pair production of the scalar mediator at the LHC, which yields events with two SM jets and two emerging jets at leading order. The results are interpreted using two dark sector models with different flavor structures, and exclude mediator masses up to 1950 (1950) GeV for an unflavored (flavor-aligned) dark QCD model. The unflavored results surpass a previous search for emerging jets by setting the most stringent mediator mass exclusion limits to date, while the flavor-aligned results provide the first direct mediator mass exclusion limits to date.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Interpretations of the ATLAS measurements of Higgs boson production and decay rates and differential cross-sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the Higgs boson production times decay rates and differential cross-sections have recently been performed by the ATLAS experiment in several decay channels using up to 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded at the Large Hadron Collider. This paper presents multiple interpretations of these Higgs boson measurements. Measurements of production-mode cross-sections, simplified template cross-sections and fiducial differential cross-sections in different decay channels are reparameterised in terms of the impact of Standard Model effective field theory operators, and constraints are reported on the corresponding Wilson coefficients. Production and decay rate measurements are interpreted in UV-complete extensions of the Standard Model, namely the two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) near the alignment limit and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) for various MSSM benchmark scenarios. The constraints on the 2HDM parameters (cos(β - α), tanβ) and the MSSM parameters (m A , tanβ) are complementary to those obtained from direct searches for additional Higgs bosons.

A search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in final states containing many jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in final states with high jet multiplicity is presented. The search uses 140 fb –1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The results are interpreted in the context of R-parity-violating supersymmetry models that feature prompt gluino-pair production decaying directly to three jets each or decaying to two jets and a neutralino which subsequently decays promptly to three jets. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are extracted. Gluinos with masses up to 1800 GeV are excluded when decaying directly to three jets. In the cascade scenario, gluinos with masses up to 2340 GeV are excluded for a neutralino with mass up to 1250 GeV.

Dynamic Features of Cu-Ceria Interface under CO 2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

It is generally accepted that metal–support interaction is very important for the hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol, but little has been revealed about the feature of interfacial active sites under real reaction conditions since there are only limited techniques that can be applied under high-pressure conditions. Here, in this work, by combining multiple in situ and operando techniques on a model Cu/ceria catalyst, we have tracked Cu and ceria sites for methanol formation. Under the reaction condition, it is found that upon reaching the reaction temperature, oxidized Cu species in the as-synthesized catalyst immediately change into metallic Cu species. Following this, it is the gradual formation of methanol, the changing rate of which coincides with the formation of a unique Ce 3+ species. The combined experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have determined that the formed Ce 3+ sites driven by the reaction conditions are bound to hydrides, adsorbed carbonate species, and interfacial active Cu sites. The Cu-ceria interaction in this complex moiety is weak and can be easily disturbed with reaction environment variations, leading to dynamic changes at the interface upon the hydrogenation of active carbonate intermediates, which are precursors for the formation of methanol. The formation of this unique Cu–Ce 3+ interface and its dynamicity lead to an increase of methanol selectivity from less than 20% to 60%. These results suggest that reactant-derived species (H – and carbonate in this work) can be essential components of the active center with the functions of manipulating the metal−oxide interaction and directing reaction pathways.

Capturing Ring Opening in Photoexcited Enolic Acetylacetone upon Hydrogen Bond Dissociation by Ultrafast Electron Diffraction

Photoinduced biological and chemical reactions are often based on key structural transformations of a molecule driven across multiple electronic states. Acetylacetone (AcAc) is a prototypical system for complex chemical pathways involving several conical intersections (CI) and singlet–triplet intersystem crossings (ISC) characterized by distinct geometries. In the gas phase, AcAc is predominantly in a planar ring-like enolic form stabilized by a strong intramolecular O–H···O hydrogen bond. Following excitation into the S 2 (ππ*) state at 266 nm, acetylacetone undergoes rapid internal conversion followed by intersystem crossing. Such relaxation pathways are associated with structural changes including ring opening, deplanarization, and bond elongation. In this work, ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) at the SLAC MeV-UED setup is employed as a direct structural probe with a time resolution of 160 fs. Together with trajectory surface hopping simulations, analysis of the UED data provides a new perspective on the early time nuclear dynamics in acetylacetone. Specifically, AcAc is observed to undergo ring opening, deplanarization, and bond elongation all within the first 700 fs after photoexcitation. The monitored dynamics is associated mainly with the nuclear motion on the S 1 potential energy surface, formed after very rapid transfer from S 2 to S 1 , allowing AcAc to reach the conical intersection to intersystem crossing. Such time scales of nuclear motion are contrasted with the time scales of electronic transitions in AcAc that were previously characterized with spectroscopic methods, specifically internal conversion (<100 fs) and intersystem crossing (∼1.5 ps).

Constraints on standard model effective field theory for a Higgs boson produced in association with W or Z bosons in the H → $\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}$ decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) analysis with dimension-six operators probing nonresonant new physics effects is performed in the Higgs-strahlung process, where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a W or Z boson, in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The final states in which the W or Z boson decays leptonically and the Higgs boson decays to a pair of bottom quarks are considered. The analyzed data were collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . An approach designed to simultaneously optimize the sensitivity to Wilson coefficients of multiple SMEFT operators is employed. Likelihood scans as functions of the Wilson coefficients that carry SMEFT sensitivity in this final state are performed for different expansions in SMEFT. The results are consistent with the predictions of the standard model.

Multiplicity-dependent jet modification from di-hadron correlations in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Short-range correlations between charged particles are studied via two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The correlation functions are measured as a function of the relative azimuthal angle ∆φ and the pseudorapidity separation ∆η for pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 0.9 and the transverse-momentum range 1 < p T < 8 GeV/c. Near-side (|∆φ| < 1.3) peak widths are extracted from a generalised Gaussian fitted over the correlations in full pseudorapidity separation (|∆η| < 1.8), while the per-trigger associated near-side yields are extracted for the short-range correlations (|∆η| < 1.3). Both are evaluated as a function of charged-particle multiplicity obtained by two different event activity estimators. The width of the near-side peak decreases with increasing multiplicity, and this trend is reproduced qualitatively by the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA 8, AMPT, and EPOS. However, the models overestimate the width in the low transverse-momentum region (p T < 3 GeV/c). The per-trigger associated near-side yield increases with increasing multiplicity. Although this trend is also captured qualitatively by the considered event generators, the yield is mostly overestimated by the models in the considered kinematic range. The measurement of the shape and yield of the short-range correlation peak can help us understand the interplay between jet fragmentation and event activity, quantify the narrowing trend of the near-side peak as a function of transverse momentum and multiplicity selections in pp collisions, and search for final-state jet modification in small collision systems.

First observation of strange baryon enhancement with effective energy in pp collisions at the LHC

The production of (multi-)strange hadrons is measured at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV as a function of the local charged-particle multiplicity in the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 0.5 and of the very-forward energy measured by the ALICE Zero-Degree Calorimeters. The latter provides information on the effective energy, i.e. the energy available for particle production in the collision once subtracted from the centre-of-mass energy. The yields of K$^{0}_{s}$, $Λ$ + $\overline{Λ}$, and $Ξ$ – + $\overline{Ξ}$ + per charged-particle increase with the effective energy. In addition, this work exploits a multi-differential approach to decouple the roles of local multiplicity and effective energy in such an enhancement. The results presented in this article provide new insights into the interplay between global properties of the collision, such as the initial available energy in the event, and the locally produced final hadronic state, connected to the charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity. Notably, a strong increase of strange baryon production with effective energy is observed for fixed charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity. These results are discussed within the context of existing phenomenological models of hadronisation implemented in different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator.

Search for nonresonant new physics signals in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for nonresonant new physics phenomena in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets is performed using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The analysis considers two effective field theory models with dimension-six operators; involving four-fermion contact interactions between two leptons (ℓℓ, electrons or muons) and b or s quarks (bbℓℓ and bsℓℓ). Two lepton flavor combinations (ee and μμ) are required and events are classified as having 0, 1, or ≥2 b-tagged jets in the final state. No significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set on the production cross section of the new physics signals. These translate into lower limits on the energy scale Λ of 6.9 to 9.0 TeV in the bbℓℓ model, depending on model parameters, and on the ratio of energy scale and effective coupling, Λ/g*, of 2.0 to 2.6 TeV in the bsℓℓ model. Lepton flavor universality is also tested by comparing the dielectron (ee) and dimuon (μμ) mass spectra for different b-tagged jet multiplicities. No significant deviation from the standard model expectation of unity is observed.

Measurement of the inclusive $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ cross section in final states with at least one lepton and additional jets with 302 pb −1 of pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 5.02 TeV

A measurement of the top quark pair ($ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $) production cross section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC in autumn 2017, in dedicated runs with low-energy and low-intensity conditions with respect to the default configuration, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb$^{−1}$. The measurement is performed using events with one electron or muon, and multiple jets, at least one of them being identified as originating from a b quark (b tagged). Events are classified based on the number of all reconstructed jets and of b-tagged jets. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to enhance the separation between the signal and backgrounds. The measured cross section is $ 62.5\pm 1.6{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-2.5}^{+2.6}\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.2\left(\textrm{lumi}\right) $ pb. A combination with the result in the dilepton channel based on the same data set yields a value of 62.3 ± 1.5 (stat) ± 2.4 (syst) ± 1.2 (lumi) pb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of $ {69.5}_{-3.7}^{+3.5} $ pb at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.
