Pulsar observations and neutron star models

Information about the physical parameters of neutron stars is obtained from pulsar observations. The energy balance of the Crab Nebula and the Vela X remnant allows one to derive limits for the masses of the Crab and Vela pulsars. Glitch observations provide further clues on the masses of these two pulsars. The degree of confidence with which one should believe the derived numbers is pointed out. The possibility of observing neutron stars in binary systems as pulsating X-ray sources is discussed. Finally, the importance of observing redshifted gamma ray lines from the surface of neutron stars, and thus directly measuring either individual or statistical properties of these objects, is pointed out.

X-ray bursts from solar flares behind the limb

X-ray bursts are identified from the UCSD OSO-7 X-ray experiment data. X-ray spectroheliograms of OSO-5, H alpha activity at the limb, and the emergence and disappearance of sunspot groups at the limb were studied and 17 active centers were found as likely seats of the X-ray bursts beyond the limb. The analysis of 37 X-ray bursts and their physical parameters is presented. Results show that (1) the distributions of maximum temperature, maximum emission measure, and characteristic cooling time of the over-the-limb events do not significantly differ from those of disk events; (2) that radiation is the dominant cooling mechanism for the hot flare plasma; and (3) that the scale height for X-ray emission in the 5-10 keV range is large. Observations show that the fraction of soft X-ray bursts which have a nonthermal component is the same on and off of the disk. Hard X-ray emission over extended regions is indicated.

Experience gained from computer processing of physical experimental data during the restoration of measured values

The processing stage in which the restored values of the physical parameters are received is described. The following main steps are discussed: estimation of the state of the telemetry data, processing of the calibration data, and determination of the errors in the data; data decommutation and analysis of the structure of measurement cycles for each instrument; decoding, estimates of the reliability of the restored data, and their agreement with the models adopted for the measurement process; and analysis of errors due to deterministic and random factors. A block diagram of the method is presented.

Spectroscopic analysis of solar and cosmic X-ray spectra. 1: The nature of cosmic X-ray spectra and proposed analytical techniques

Techniques for the study of the solar corona are reviewed as an introduction to a discussion of modifications required for the study of cosmic sources. Spectroscopic analysis of individual sources and the interstellar medium is considered. The latter was studied via analysis of its effect on the spectra of selected individual sources. The effects of various characteristics of the ISM, including the presence of grains, molecules, and ionization, are first discussed, and the development of ISM models is described. The expected spectral structure of individual cosmic sources is then reviewed with emphasis on supernovae remnants and binary X-ray sources. The observational and analytical requirements imposed by the characteristics of these sources are identified, and prospects for the analysis of abundances and the study of physical parameters within them are assessed. Prospects for the spectroscopic study of other classes of X-ray sources are also discussed.

Extreme-ultraviolet observations of coronal holes - Initial results from Skylab

We compare the appearance and physical parameters of the solar chromosphere, transition zone, and corona in areas of coronal holes with that of quiet areas outside the hole. Measurements of the height of emission of various ions in a coronal hole appearing at the polar limb give a quantitative indication of the increased thickness of the transition zone underlying coronal holes.

Adaptive spacecraft attitude control utilizing eigenaxis rotations

Conventional and adaptive attitude control of spacecraft which use control moment gyros (CMG's) as torque sources are discussed. Control laws predicated on the assumption of a linear system are used since the spacecraft equations of motion are formulated in an 'eigenaxis system' so that they are essentially linear during 'slow' maneuvers even if large angles are involved. The overall control schemes are 'optimal' in several senses. Eigenaxis rotations and a weighted pseudo-inverse CMG steering law are used and, in the adaptive case, a Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) controller based on Liapunov's Second Method is adopted. To substantiate the theory, digital simulation results obtained using physical parameters of a Large Space Telescope type spacecraft are presented. These results indicate that an adaptive control law is often desirable.

Satellite determination of nature and microstructure of atmospheric aerosols

A method is presented for the determination of aerosol physical parameters on the basis of scattered radiance measurements. The reconstruction of aerosol particle size distribution in the case of a spectral forward scattering method is considered, taking into account an inverse diffraction integral expression, a model cloud, the effect of lower wavenumber cut-off, the effect of higher wavenumber cut-off, the effect of spectral resolution, and the effects of multiple scattering and background noise. The determination of the aerosol complex refractive index with the aid of a minimization search method is also discussed.

Pulsation of double-mode Cepheids and comments on the problem of Cepheid masses

The double mode Cepheids are stars, found near the low luminosity end of the Population I Cepheid strip, which display a mixture of modes where the longer of the two periods is between two and four days. It is usually assumed that the mixture is composed of fundamental and first harmonic modes. In order to obtain the various physical parameters for the double mode Cepheids, the pulsation constant, Q, is determined in the period-mean-density relation for realistic stellar models, by making use of a linearized nonadiabatic analysis. By studying a large number of models that obey a variety of mass luminosity relations, simple fitting formulas for the pulsation constants are obtained.

Reaction of passengers to public service vehicle ride

A series of questionnaire studies is described, which was carried out on passengers in public service vehicles in the United Kingdom particularly cross-channel hovercraft, helicopter and train. The effectiveness of the different rating techniques employed is examined and it is demonstrated that useful and reliable information can be obtained on the effects of such physical parameters as vibration, vehicle motion and noise using rating methods which involve no external standards. Some results obtained from analysis of the survey returns are presented.

Vibration detection of component health and operability

In order to prevent catastrophic failure and eliminate unnecessary periodic maintenance in the shuttle orbiter program environmental control system components, some means of detecting incipient failure in these components is required. The utilization was investigated of vibrational/acoustic phenomena as one of the principal physical parameters on which to base the design of this instrumentation. Baseline vibration/acoustic data was collected from three aircraft type fans and two aircraft type pumps over a frequency range from a few hertz to greater than 3000 kHz. The baseline data included spectrum analysis of the baseband vibration signal, spectrum analysis of the detected high frequency bandpass acoustic signal, and amplitude distribution of the high frequency bandpass acoustic signal. A total of eight bearing defects and two unbalancings was introduced into the five test items. All defects were detected by at least one of a set of vibration/acoustic parameters with a margin of at least 2:1 over the worst case baseline. The design of a portable instrument using this set of vibration/acoustic parameters for detecting incipient failures in environmental control system components is described.

A differential game solution to the Coplanar tail-chase aerial combat problem

Numerical results obtained in a simplified version of the one on one aerial combat problem are presented. The primary aim of the data is to specify the roles of pursuer and evader as functions of the relative geometry and of the significant physical parameters of the problem. Numerical results are given in a case in which the slower aircraft is more maneuverable than the faster aircraft. A third order dynamic model of the relative motion is described, for which the state variables are relative range, bearing, and heading. The ranges at termination are arbitary in the present version of the problem, so the weapon systems of both aircraft can be visualized as forward firing high velocity weapons, which must be aimed at the tail pipe of the evader. It was found that, for the great majority of the ralative geometries, each aircraft can evade the weapon system of the other.

Intermediate-band photometry of faint standard stars

The David Dunlap Observatory system uses six intermediate-band filters whose central wavelengths were chosen to cover important features in the spectrum of a late-type star. Calibrations of the color indices with physical parameters, allow one to estimate T sub eff, log g, Fe/H, M sub v and reddening directly from the photometry. Although a number of standards lists exist, only a small fraction of the stars is fainter than V=6. It is desirable to add to the numbers of faint standards. Results are presented of photometry of sixteen stars obtained during a program of variable-star photometry at Blue Mesa Observatory.

Strain effect on the electronic density of states and dc conductivity of disordered binary alloys

A single-band model calculation is developed for the effect of strain on the temperature variation of the electronic density of states and the electrical onductivity of disordered binary alloys. Experimentally, strain has only a small effect on the temperature variation of the conductivity. Shifts in the Fermi level and distortions of the density of states under different strains are found from the calculations. The small change in the temperature variation of conductivity under strain is a result of competition between these two effects. Methods to extract physical parameters characterizing alloys from measurements of the strain and temperature variation of the resistivity are discussed. Suggestions are also made about materials-selection criteria for strain-gauge applications.

Numerical determination of the transmissibility characteristics of a squeeze film damped forced vibration system

Numerical solutions of the governing equations of motion of a liquid squeeze film damped forced vibration system were carried out to examine the feasibility of using a liquid squeeze film to cushion and protect large structures, such as buildings, located in areas of high seismic activity. The mathematical model used was that for a single degree of freedom squeeze film damped spring mass system. The input disturbance was simulated by curve fitting actual seismic data with an eleventh order Lagranging polynomial technique. Only the normal component of the seismic input was considered. The nonlinear, nonhomogeneous governing differential equation of motion was solved numerically to determine the transmissibility over a wide range of physical parameters using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta technique. It is determined that a liquid squeeze film used as a damping agent in a spring-mass system can significantly reduce the response amplitude for a seismic input disturbance.

A theoretical/experimental program to develop active optical pollution sensors

Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology was applied to the assessment of air quality, and its usefulness was evaluated by actual field tests. Necessary hardware was successfully constructed and operated in the field. Measurements of necessary physical parameters, such as SO2 absorption coefficients were successfully completed and theoretical predictions of differential absorption performance were reported. Plume modeling improvements were proposed. A full scale field test of equipment, data analysis and auxiliary data support was conducted in Maryland during September 1976.

A mechanism for the production of pulsar radio radiation

Recent theoretical studies have suggested that avalanches of electron-positron pairs are produced by spark discharges near the magnetic poles of pulsars. This pair production mechanism may result in a double-peaked particle distribution function. We investigate collective effects caused by a high-energy electron-positron beam traversing a low-energy electron-positron plasma for an astrophysically interesting range of physical parameters. The principal result of this paper is to identify transverse unstable waves whose phase propagation may occur at any arbitrary angle (other than zero) with respect to the magnetic field but whose group velocity is along the magnetic field and approximately the speed of light. It is suggested that the observed radio pulses from pulsars may be caused by the focusing of these transverse waves along the open field lines extending from a pulsar's polar cap to the light cylinder.
