Third moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from physical-point lattice QCD

Using forward matrix elements of local leading-twist operators, we present a determination of the isovector third Mellin moments ⟨𝑥 2 ⟩ of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used, which were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2+1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. Leveraging a wide set of operators, two extraction methods for the matrix elements, and the automatic inclusion of model uncertainties via bootstrapped model averages, we extract values of the third Mellin moments. Furthermore, this is the first direct calculation of these observables performed at the physical pion mass.

Simulations of Stochastic Fluid Dynamics near a Critical Point in the Phase Diagram

Here, we present simulations of stochastic fluid dynamics in the vicinity of a critical endpoint belonging to the universality class of the Ising model. This study is motivated by the challenge of modeling the dynamics of critical fluctuations near a conjectured critical endpoint in the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We focus on the interaction of shear modes with a conserved scalar density, which is known as model H. We show that the observed dynamical scaling behavior depends on the correlation length and the shear viscosity of the fluid. As the correlation length is increased or the viscosity is decreased we observe a crossover from the dynamical exponent of critical diffusion, z≃4, to the expected scaling exponent of model H, z≃3. We use our method to investigate the time-dependent correlation function of non-Gaussian moments M n (t) of the order parameter. We find that the relaxation time depends in a nontrivial manner on the power n.

Statistical Behavior of Low-Amplitude Power System Point-on-Wave Measurements

The power grid is undergoing massive changes to ensure resiliency and reliability in a more decentralized world. Distributed energy resources are becoming a prominent source of generation, potentially leading to a lack of centralized generation sources. Due to these new behaviors and system topologies, it is important to install measurement devices that are 1) accurate and 2) self-aware of their measurement quality. In this paper, a residential-scale microgrid is used to generate voltage and current waveforms, captured by Verivolt and National Instruments measurement equipment. A least-squares approach is used to separate the “clean” signals from the noise. Finally, Gaussian mixture modeling is used to approximate noise distributions, and it is shown these higher-order distribution estimates are a better fit to voltage and current noise profiles than single-mode Gaussian estimates.

Thermodynamic Modeling of Point Defects in Triple Conducting Perovskite Ba 0.95 La 0.05 FeO 3- $_δ$ with Incorporation of the Hydride Defect Formation Reaction for Solid Oxide Cells

Distinct from the proton defect, the hydride defect species may be present in certain perovskite materials in reducing environments such as in fuel electrodes of solid oxide cells (SOCs) or on the reducing side of ceramic membranes. A generalized defect thermodynamic model was developed for the triple-conducting perovskites (La,Ba)Fe 1-x M x O 3-δ (M = Y and Zr) to allow inclusion of the hydride defect formation reaction in addition to the other three main defect reactions, namely, the oxygen vacancy formation, hydration, and charge disproportionation reactions. This comprehensive defect model also allows the incorporation of polynomial functional forms of oxygen nonstoichiometry δ to describe the defect reaction energies and entropies and to enable refinements of the defect reaction equilibrium constants in the defect thermodynamic analysis. As a first step, the developed model is applied to the Ba 0.95 La 0.05 FeO 3-δ material as an illustrative system to obtain its Brouwer diagrams with both the proton and hydride defects in relevant SOC conditions, particularly for more reducing environments. In conclusion, the results provide direct guidance on the influence of electronic and ionic defect concentrations upon thermodynamic properties and ultimately on the performance of Ba 0.95 La 0.05 FeO 3-δ and potentially other (La,Ba)Fe 1-x M x O 3-δ perovskite materials involved in SOC applications.

Three-point Analysis for Butler-Volmer Electrochemical Kinetics

This file contains a spreadsheet and equations that evaluate corrosion test data. The data (which can be inserted by the user) is current vs voltage data. This spreadsheet will be part of the supplemental information of a journal article that is under review. Specifically, the spreadsheet evaluates the classical Butler Volmer equation in the presence of several different forms of noise found in electrochemical systems. The forms of noise are: 1) solution resistance, 2) random noise in the current, 3) drift of the open circuit potential voltage.

Adaptive Stiffness Power Take-Off System for a Hydraulic Hose-Pump Point Absorber Wave Energy Converter

Two crucial challenges faced in the design of ocean wave energy converters (WECs) are maintaining high capacity factors and remaining robust in everchanging, harsh ocean environments. This study introduces a novel mechanism for achieving reactive WEC control with a soft hydraulic power take-off, thereby addressing both challenges. The device of interest involves a hydraulic pump, constructed from a fluidic flexible matrix composite (F2MC), which is cyclically stretched by driving waves and pressurizes working fluid through a turbine-generator. This class of fiber-reinforced stretch hoses is established for ocean use as robust moorings and shock absorbers. The dynamic properties of the F2MC pump depend on internal pressure, which can be controlled by a continuously variable transmission between the turbine and generator, allowing the system to be adapted for better performance over a wide range of wave conditions. This work presents a dynamic model for operation and adaptive behavior of this power take-off system, experimentally validates components of the model, and performs dynamic simulations of the system that show increases in power production and capacity factor compared to non-adaptive operation for a variety of driving wave conditions. This work develops the basis for future large-scale experimental testing and controller design of this system.

Dual dressed black holes as the end point of the charged superradiant instability in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Yang Mills

Charged Black holes in AdS_5 × S^5 A d S 5 × S 5 suffer from superradiant instabilities over a range of energies. Hairy black hole solutions (constructed within gauged supergravity) have previously been proposed as endpoints to this instability. We demonstrate that these hairy black holes are themselves unstable to the emission of large dual giant gravitons. We propose that the endpoint to this instability is given by Dual Dressed Black Holes (DDBH)s; configurations consisting of one, two, or three very large dual giant gravitons surrounding a core AdS A d S black hole with one, two, or three SO(6) S O ( 6 ) chemical potentials equal to unity. The dual giants each live at AdS A d S radial coordinates of order \sqrt{N} N and each carry charge of order N^2 N 2 . The large separation makes DDBHs a very weakly interacting mix of their components and allows for a simple computation of their thermodynamics. We conjecture that DDBHs dominate the phase diagram of \mathcal{N}=4 𝒩 = 4 Yang-Mills over a range of energies around the BPS plane, and provide an explicit construction of this phase diagram, briefly discussing the interplay with supersymmetry. We develop the quantum description of dual giants around black hole backgrounds and explicitly verify that DDBHs are stable to potential tunneling instabilities, precisely when the chemical potentials of the core black holes equal unity. We also construct the 10-dimensional DDBH bulk solutions.
