An evaluation of machine processing techniques of ERTS-1 data for user applications

A broad study is described to evaluate a set of machine analysis and processing techniques applied to ERTS-1 data. Based on the analysis results in urban land use analysis and soil association mapping together with previously reported results in general earth surface feature identification and crop species classification, a profile of general applicability of this procedure is beginning to emerge. Put in the hands of a user who knows well the information needed from the data and also is familiar with the region to be analyzed it appears that significantly useful information can be generated by these methods. When supported by preprocessing techniques such as the geometric correction and temporal registration capabilities, final products readily useable by user agencies appear possible. In parallel with application, through further research, there is much potential for further development of these techniques both with regard to providing higher performance and in new situations not yet studied.

Flutter analysis of swept-wing subsonic aircraft with parameter studies of composite wings

A computer program is presented for the flutter analysis, including the effects of rigid-body roll, pitch, and plunge of swept-wing subsonic aircraft with a flexible fuselage and engines mounted on flexible pylons. The program utilizes a direct flutter solution in which the flutter determinant is derived by using finite differences, and the root locus branches of the determinant are searched for the lowest flutter speed. In addition, a preprocessing subroutine is included which evaluates the variable bending and twisting stiffness properties of the wing by using a laminated, balanced ply, filamentary composite plate theory. The program has been substantiated by comparisons with existing flutter solutions. The program has been applied to parameter studies which examine the effect of filament orientation upon the flutter behavior of wings belonging to the following three classes: wings having different angles of sweep, wings having different mass ratios, and wings having variable skin thicknesses. These studies demonstrated that the program can perform a complete parameter study in one computer run. The program is designed to detect abrupt changes in the lowest flutter speed and mode shape as the parameters are varied.

Image data processing of earth resources management

The Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1) was launched on July 23, 1972. Since that date, the vehicle has been acquiring and transmitting to earth a vast amount of information relating to the earth's resources. Scientific investigators throughout the world have been analyzing photographic products produced from this data with significant results. Recently, there has been a major shift of emphasis from the visual analysis of photo products to the use of sophisticated digital information extraction techniques. Specialized equipment, such as the GE IMAGE 100 System, has been developed that operates directly from Computer Compatible Tapes, (CCT’s), which contain preprocessed digital data acquired from the ERTS spacecraft. Analysis of CCT data avoids the losses in image resolution and quality which are inherent to all photo processing techniques, thereby greatly increasing the utility of ERTS data. Future ground processing systems will turn out fully corrected (radiometric and geometric) digital tapes which will further increase the utility of ERTS data. This paper is presented in two parts: the first part deals with the subject of present and future generations of image processing and information extraction systems under development at the General Electric Company; the second part describes in more detail the design and operation of GE1s interactive multispectral information extraction systems, IMAGE 100, and discusses results of analyses of ERTS data over a number of U.S. sites.

Snow survey and vegetation growth in high mountains (Swiss Alps) and additional ERTS investigations in Switzerland

The author has identified the following significant results. Two different methods, an analog and a digital one, have been developed for rapid and accurate mapping of the areal extent and changes in snow cover in high mountains. The quick-look method is based on individual visual control of each image using a photo quantizer which provides exact references for density slicing with high resolution lith-film. The digital snow classification system is based on discriminant analysis with the data of the four multispectral bands as variables and contains all preprocessing, feature extraction, and mapping steps for an operational application. Two different sets of sampling groups were established which apply to different conditions of snow cover. The first one serves for the normal situation with a uniform dry and new cover. The second one serves for situations with partly thawing and/or frozen snow.

Production of gaseous fuel by pyrolysis of municipal solid waste

Pilot plant tests were conducted on a simulated solid waste which was a mixture of shredded newspaper, wood waste, polyethylene plastics, crushed glass, steel turnings, and water. Tests were conducted at 1400 F in a lead-bath pyrolyser. Cold feed was deaerated by compression and was dropped onto a moving hearth of molten lead before being transported to a sealed storage container. About 80 percent of the feed's organic content was converted to gaseous products which contain over 90 percent of the potential waste energy; 12 percent was converted to water; and 8 percent remained as partially pyrolyzed char and tars. Nearly half of the carbon in the feed is converted to benzene, toluene and medium-quality fuel gas, a potential credit of over $25 per ton of solid waste. The system was shown to require minimal preprocessing and less sorting then other methods.

A digital algorithm for spectral deconvolution with noise filtering and peak picking: NOFIPP-DECON

Noise-filtering, peak-picking deconvolution software incorporates multiple convoluted convolute integers and multiparameter optimization pattern search. The two theories are described and three aspects of the software package are discussed in detail. Noise-filtering deconvolution was applied to a number of experimental cases ranging from noisy, nondispersive X-ray analyzer data to very noisy photoelectric polarimeter data. Comparisons were made with published infrared data, and a man-machine interactive language has evolved for assisting in very difficult cases. A modified version of the program is being used for routine preprocessing of mass spectral and gas chromatographic data.

Quantification of Geologic Lineaments by Manual and Machine Processing Techniques

The effect of operator variability and subjectivity in lineament mapping and methods to minimize or eliminate these problems by use of several machine preprocessing methods was studied. Mapped lineaments of a test landmass were used and the results were compared statistically. The total number of fractures mapped by the operators and their average lengths varied considerably, although comparison of lineament directions revealed some consensus. A summary map (785 linears) produced by overlaying the maps generated by the four operators shows that only 0.4 percent were recognized by all four operators, 4.7 percent by three, 17.8 percent by two, and 77 percent by one operator. Similar results were obtained in comparing these results with another independent group. This large amount of variability suggests a need for the standardization of mapping techniques, which might be accomplished by a machine aided procedure. Two methods of machine aided mapping were tested, both simulating directional filters.

Engineering studies of vectorcardiographs in blood pressure measuring systems, appendix 3

The following subjects were covered: (1) ASM80 manual, (2) signal preprocessing as an aid to on-line EKG analysis, and (3) high speed evaluation of magnetic tape recordings of electrocardiograms. A description of the ASM80 symbolic assembly program for the INTEL 8080 microprocessor and a user's manual were presented. The capability of three redundancy reduction algorithms to produce adequate representations of electrocardiographic data was examined. A hardware device was constructed which carried out zero order interpolation on a signal. Examination of the zero order interpolators reconstructed signal indicated that this representation was adequate for analysis of rhythm. A system to analyze magnetic tapes of electrocardiograms recorded over 24 hour intervals was designed. The recordings are sampled 200 times per second using a Nova computer and a special interface system. This system was tested on several recordings of clinical data, containing over 75 premature ventricular contractions, each one of which was flagged.

Satellite on-board processing for earth resources data

Results of a survey of earth resources user applications and their data requirements, earth resources multispectral scanner sensor technology, and preprocessing algorithms for correcting the sensor outputs and for data bulk reduction are presented along with a candidate data format. Computational requirements required to implement the data analysis algorithms are included along with a review of computer architectures and organizations. Computer architectures capable of handling the algorithm computational requirements are suggested and the environmental effects of an on-board processor discussed. By relating performance parameters to the system requirements of each of the user requirements the feasibility of on-board processing is determined for each user. A tradeoff analysis is performed to determine the sensitivity of results to each of the system parameters. Significant results and conclusions are discussed, and recommendations are presented.

Quantification of geologic lineaments by manual and machine processing techniques

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of operator variability and subjectivity in lineament mapping and to examine methods to minimize or eliminate these problems by use of several machine preprocessing methods. LANDSAT scenes from the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma and the Colorado Plateau were analyzed as test cases. Four geologists mapped lineaments on an Anadarko Basin scene, using transparencies of MSS bands 4-7, and their results are compared statistically. The total number of fractures mapped by the operators and their average lengths varied considerably, although comparison of lineament directions revealed some consensus. A summary map (785 linears) produced by overlaying the maps generated by the four operators showed that only 0.4% were recognized by all four operators, 4.7% by three, 17.8% by two and 77% by one operator. Two methods of machine aided mapping were tested, both simulating directional filters. One consists of computer (digital) processing of CCTs using edge enhancement algorithms, the other employs a television (analog) scanning of an image transparency which superimposes the original image and one offset in the direction of the scan line.
