A refined nonlinear theory of plates with transverse shear deformation

A higher-order shear deformation theory of plates accounting for the von Karman strains is presented. The theory contains the same dependent unknowns as in the Hencky-Mindlin type first-order shear deformation theory and accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate. Exact solutions of simply supported plates are obtained using the linear theory and the results are compared with the exact solutions of three-dimensional elasticity theory, the first order shear deformation theory, and the classical plate theory. The present theory predicts the deflections, stresses, and frequencies more accurately when compared to the first-order theory and the classical plate theory.

Refinement of an 'alternate' method for measuring heating rates in hypersonic wind tunnels

Recently obtained hypersonic wind tunnel results are presented which resolve the principal uncertainty associated with the use of thin film gages on substrates of the glass ceramic substance designated MACOR.THe uncertainty is with respect to both MACOR's thermal properties and the variation of these properties with temperature. The relatively large influence of shock strength on stagnation point heating at low Reynolds numbers is illustrated.

Role of Convection in Grain Refining

A quantitative representation of the heat and fluid flow fields in electromagnetically levitated (positioned) metallic specimens is examined. Experimental studies as well as modelling of those studies on undercooling and solidification of levitated metal droplets are also considered. Thermal measurements will be made of the undercooling and solidification of levitated metal droplets. Thermal measurements will be made of the undercooling and of the details of the ultra-rapid recalescence. This levitation technique combined with quenching will be used to aid in the development of coherent model for the solidification process related to structural studies, including thermodynamics and kinetics for nucleation and metastable solute partition, kinetics for solid/liquid interface velocity with high undercooling, and heat flow consideration.

Use of satellite ocean color observations to refine understanding of global geochemical cycles

In October 1978, the first satellite-borne color sensor, the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS), was launched aboard Nimbus-7 with four visible and two infrared bands, permitting a sensitivity about 60 times that of the Landsat-1 multispectral scanner. The CZCS radiance data can be utilized to estimate ocean chlorophyll concentrations by detecting shifts in sea color, particularly in oceanic waters. The obtained data can be used in studies regarding problems of overfishing, and, in addition, in investigations concerning the consequences of man's accelerated extraction of nitrogen from the atmosphere and addition of carbon to the atmosphere. The satellite data base is considered along with a simulation analysis, and ships providing ground-truth chlorophyll measurements in the ocean.

Refined potentials for rare gas atom adsorption on rare gas and alkali-halide surfaces

The utilization of models of interatomic potential for physical interaction to estimate the long range attractive potential for rare gases and ions is discussed. The long range attractive force is calculated in terms of the atomic dispersion properties. A data base of atomic dispersion parameters for rare gas atoms, alkali ion, and halogen ions is applied to the study of the repulsive core; the procedure for evaluating the repulsive core of ion interactions is described. The interaction of rare gas atoms on ideal rare gas solid and alkali-halide surfaces is analyzed; zero coverage absorption potentials are derived.

Coma morphology and dust-emission pattern of periodic Comet Halley. IV - Spin vector refinement and map of discrete dust sources for 1910

A hypothetical continuous ejection of dust from discrete emission sources on the sunlit hemisphere of a rotating comet nucleus is tested against 34 digitally processed plates of Comet Halley over the May 5-June 6, 1910 period, as well as the reported projected lengths of six antisunward jets observed between May 14 and June 6, 1910. A map of the comet's nucleus is presented of whose 13 discrete dust sources only two can be modeled as point-like regions. Attention is given to curious cases of 'chain' activation in which the sources that intersect one another on the surface emit dust sequentially, in successive rotations.

On mixed and displacement finite element models of a refined shear deformation theory for laminated anisotropic plates

An improved plate theory that accounts for the transverse shear deformation is presented, and mixed and displacement finite element models of the theory are developed. The theory is based on an assumed displacement field in which the inplane displacements are expanded in terms of the thickness coordinate up to the cubic term and the transverse deflection is assumed to be independent of the thickness coordinate. The governing equations of motion for the theory are derived from the Hamilton's principle. The theory eliminates the need for shear correction factors because the transverse shear stresses are represented parabolically. A mixed finite element model that uses independent approximations of the displacements and moments, and a displacement model that uses only displacements as degrees of freedom are developed. A comparison of the numerical results for bending with the exact solutions of the new theory and the three-dimensional elasticity theory shows that the present theory (and hence the finite element models) is more accurate than other plate-theories of the same order.

A refined 'standard' thermal model for asteroids based on observations of 1 Ceres and 2 Pallas

An analysis of ground-based thermal IR observations of 1 Ceres and 2 Pallas in light of their recently determined occultation diameters and small amplitude light curves has yielded a new value for the IR beaming parameter employed in the standard asteroid thermal emission model which is significantly lower than the previous one. When applied to the reduction of thermal IR observations of other asteroids, this new value is expected to yield model diameters closer to actual values. The present formulation incorporates the IAU magnitude convention for asteroids that employs zero-phase magnitudes, including the opposition effect.

POLYSITE - An interactive package for the selection and refinement of Landsat image training sites

A versatile multifunction package, POLYSITE, developed for Goddard's Land Analysis System, is described which simplifies the process of interactively selecting and correcting the sites used to study Landsat TM and MSS images. Image switching between the zoomed and nonzoomed image, color and shape cursor change and location display, and bit plane erase or color change, are global functions which are active at all times. Local functions possibly include manipulation of intensive study areas, new site definition, mensuration, and new image copying. The program is illustrated with the example of a full TM maser scene of metropolitan Washington, DC.

Refined Transistor Model For Simulation Of SEU

Equivalent base resistance added. Theoretical study develops equations for parameters of Gummel-Poon model of bipolar junction transistor: includes saturation current, amplification factors, charging times, knee currents, capacitances, and resistances. Portion of study concerned with base region goes beyond Gummel-Poon analysis to provide more complete understanding of transistor behavior. Extended theory useful in simulation of single-event upset (SEU) caused in logic circuits by cosmic rays or other ionizing radiation.

Refining image segmentation by polygon skeletonization

A skeletonization algorithm was encoded and applied to a test data set of land-use polygons taken from a USGS digital land use dataset at 1:250,000. The distance transform produced by this method was instrumental in the description of the shape, size, and level of generalization of the outlines of the polygons. A comparison of the topology of skeletons for forested wetlands and lakes indicated that some distinction based solely upon the shape properties of the areas is possible, and may be of use in an intelligent automated land cover classification system.

Preparation of multistage zone-refined materials for thermochemical standards

This paper describes the steps of a two-step zone purification procedure for completed minicells filled with ultrahigh-purity succinonitrile (SCN) in which the CNS is under its own vapor pressure. The solid-liquid equilibrium, as determined by melting and freezing point measurements, is therefore considered to be a realization of the triple-point. The freezing-point plateaus measured at a variety of bath temperatures demonstrated both the fundamental reproducibility of the measurement for a given sample and the lack of dependence of that measurement on the bath temperature which controls the freezing rate. The measurement reproducibility and the sample consistency indicate that the method described is indeed suitable for the preparation of pure material which can be used for the purposes of thermistor and thermometer calibration at 58.0796 + or - 0.0015 C.

Development and refinement of test bed simulations

Lewis Research Center of NASA, with support from Rocketdyne, was engaged in non-real time computer simulation effort for the Space Station Freedom Electric Power System (EPS) EASY5, a simulation package, is used as the primary tool for this activity. Early in the design of the EPS, two test beds were set up at Lewis. The Integrated Test Bed (ITB), that combines and upgrades these test beds, is in the planning stage. The test beds are designed to functionally represent many of the components of the EPS and their interconnections. The simulation effort is primarily directed towards these test beds. Model verification is performed using test bed data.

Refinements in a viscoplastic model

A thermodynamically admissible theory of viscoplasticity with two internal variables (a back stress and a drag strength) is presented. Six material functions characterize a specific viscoplastic model. In the pursuit of compromise between accuracy and simplicity, a model is developed that is a hybrid of two existing viscoplastic models. A limited number of applications of the model to Al, Cu, and Ni are presented. A novel implicit integration method is also discussed. Applications are made to obtain solutions using this viscoplastic model.

Grid refinement studies of turbine rotor-stator interaction

Results from a three-dimensional, time-accurate Navier-Stokes simulation of rotor-stator interaction in an axial turbine stage are presented. The present study uses a fine grid in the spanwise direction to better resolve endwall and tip cllearance effects and complements coarse-grid calculations that were reported earlier. A realistic turbine stage with 22 stator vanes and 28 rotor blades is simulated as a single-stator, single-rotor airfoil combination with the stator geometry modified to properly account for blockage effects. This is in contrast to the earlier coarse-grid calculations where the rotor geometry was modified. The improved grid resolution and the unmodified rotor geometry result in a more accurate simulation of the flow field, particularly in the rotor channel where the interaction effects are more severe. The numerical results are compared to experimental data wherever possible and to earlier calculations.
