First Measurements of Differential Cross Sections In Kinematic Imbalance Variables With The MicroBooNE Detector

Making high-precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters requires an unprecedented understanding of neutrino-nucleus scattering. In this presentation, we present the first muon neutrino charged current double-differential cross sections in kinematic imbalance variables. These variables characterize the imbalance in the plane transverse to an incoming neutrino. We use events with a single muon above 100 MeV/c, a single final state proton above 300 MeV/c, and no recorded final state pions. Thus, these variables act as a direct probe of nuclear effects such as final state interactions, Fermi motion, and multi-nucleon processes. We also present a complementary ongoing analysis using electron neutrinos. This channel is of the utmost importance for the extraction of neutrino oscillation parameters by making high-precision measurements. Our measurements allow us to constrain systematic uncertainties associated with neutrino oscillation results performed by near-future experiments of the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program, as well as by future large-scale experiments like DUNE.

Optical potential uncertainties on exclusive tens-of-MeV Ar cross sections

Large liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detectors, such as those planned for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), show considerable promise as a platform for next-generation measurements of supernova neutrinos. Thanks to the neutron excess in $^{40}$Ar as well as the detailed tracking possible with LArTPCs, these detectors are expected to be uniquely capable of measuring supernova electron neutrinos with high statistics and minimal backgrounds. However, these technological advantages come at the price of complexities in data interpretation; reconstruction of the incident energies of supernova neutrinos in a future LArTPC-based analysis will be subject to a variety of systematic uncertainties related to nuclear interaction modeling. In this talk, we present a study of a subset of these uncertainties as implemented in the MARLEY event generator used by DUNE and other LArTPC neutrino experiments. Variations to the optical potential used in the MARLEY nuclear de-excitation model are applied to the calculation of exclusive tens-of-MeV neutrino-nucleus cross sections for the first time, and the impact on observables of interest for supernova neutrino detection is examined. We also discuss prospects for quantifying other sources of uncertainty on the MARLEY neutrino interaction model.

The "Fake" Supernova Neutrinos of SBND: Using Muons Decaying at Rest to Study the Charged Current MeV-Scale $V_e$-Ar Cross Section

In a Type-II core collapse supernova, 99% of the total amount of energy is released in the form of neutrinos. However, the nearest supernova explosion in the last few hundred years was in 1987, over thirty years ago. It was also the first from which particle detectors around the world managed to detect the neutrino flux, yielding important information about their properties and the explosion mechanism. Neutrinos are the most weakly interacting subatomic fundamental particles known to date, and they act as a cooling mechanism for the star. Out of the six neutrino flavours currently known, the majority exiting the explosion are electron neutrinos, ve. Neutrino experiments using liquid argon (LAr) as their detector medium are unique at probing this specific channel. In the meantime, however, until the next explosion, we can still practise for the big event. With the Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) experiment at Fermilab, we can study how electron neutrinos of the same energy coming from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) interact in LAr, and measure the cross section. As BNB measurements are mostly tailored to higher energy neutrinos, I will present an overview of how SBND is aiming to select the low-energy neutrino candidates from muons Decaying At Rest (DAR) in the absorber and target within the BNB beam pipe. This is not a straightforward feat, encompassing special difficulties that include beam and flux systematic uncertainty simulation, system trigger needs and particular reconstruction efforts, and so I will present how each challenge is being addressed in SBND. This will be a novel measurement in the neutrino particle physics community, and will prove fundamental for the next generation of supernova neutrino detectors.

Charged Current Coherent Pion Production Cross-Section Measurement at MicroBooNE

Coherent pion production, characterized by a neutrino interacting with an entire nucleus without breaking it apart, results in a forward-going muon, pion, and a low-momentum recoil nucleus. By leveraging an improved understanding of particle identification and background parameterization, we aim to achieve a new level of sensitivity to coherent interactions at low neutrino energy. The outcome of this analysis will contribute to ongoing efforts to model neutrino nucleus interactions accurately in neutrino oscillation studies and beyond Standard Model searches in MicroBooNE and future experiments, such as DUNE. We present progress towards a measurement of charged current coherent pion production cross-section on argon with the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector. This measurement will use MicroBooNE's full dataset collected from the Booster Neutrino Beam with a total exposure of \( 1.3 \times 10^{21} \) protons-on-target and average neutrino energy of 0.8 GeV.

ASME Code change proposal to implement new universal high temperature constitutive models for Section III, Division 5

This report completes work on a universal high temperature constitutive model suitable for use with the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section III, Division 5 rules for the design by inelastic analysis of Class A nuclear reactor components. The goals of this work are to provide a simple model form that adequately captures the high temperature response of materials and can be applied to any future Code material. Additionally, the report describes an automated process for calibrating a model against test data. The idea is to simplify the effort required to generate a constitutive model for an arbitrary material, provided test data is available. This will accelerate the process of qualifying new Code materials in the future. In addition, the report provides calibrated models and detailed validation comparisons to test data for five currently-qualified or soon-to-be qualified materials: 316H, Grade 91, Alloy 800H, Alloy 617, and Alloy 709. The report surveys the available data for the remaining two ASME Class Materials --- 2.25Cr-1Mo and 304H --- concluding that there is enough data data to generate a model for 2.25Cr-1Mo steel provided some additional sources of non-public data can be included in the test database, but that a dedicated cyclic test campaign would be needed for 304H. Supplemental material includes the full text of an ASME Code change proposal to incorporate the models for the four currently-qualified Class A material, detailed validation comparisons to test data for the five material models, and input files for reference implementations of the constitutive models in the NEML and NEML2 modeling frameworks.

Finite-Geometry Corrections for Neutron Scattering Cross Section Measurements

In this report, we describe the corrections necessary for neutron scattering cross section measurements in experiments which use finite-geometry scattering samples. A new Geant4 based framework was developed to calculate these corrections which has been benchmarked against a well-measured test case. This framework also calculates the outgoing neutron energy dependence of the correction factors, which is crucial when resolving individual final states in the scatterer is not possible.

A section 110 evaluation of the huron king test chamber, area 3, nevada national security site, nye county, nevada

The U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Field Office tasked Desert Research Institute (DRI) with the identification and evaluation of the Huron King Test Chamber as part of their cultural resources program obligations under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The Huron King nuclear test was a vertical line-of-sight weapons effects test that took place in Area 3 on June 24, 1980. Unique to this event was a specially designed aboveground test chamber that held a model defense communications satellite in a vacuum tank meant to replicate the space environment. Sponsored by the Defense Nuclear Agency, the purpose of the experiment was to understand the response of the satellite and its materials and equipment to an electromagnetic pulse and attendant radiation. Between July and August 2022, DRI conducted an archival review on the Huron King experiment and its associated test chamber. Subsequently, pedestrian fieldwork was undertaken at the Huron King Test Chamber by DRI on September 29, 2022. During fieldwork, the outside of the test chamber was documented using a Nevada State Historic Preservation Office Architectural Resource Assessment form. This effort included verifying the substructures that compose the test chamber as determined by the archival review, as well as obtaining a detailed photographic recordation of the exterior and assessing its current condition. Notably, the site where the Huron King test took place has been abandoned and almost entirely naturalized. All of the portable instrumentation trailers, communications and data cabling, and winch systems used to retract the test chamber following the detonation were removed after completion of the experiment in 1980. Only the subsidence crater and the test chamber remain as physical evidence of this experiment. Based on these findings, DRI recommends that the Huron King Test Chamber is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) at the local level under Significance Criteria A and C and that it meets Criteria Consideration G for properties less than 50 years old.

Microstructural evaluation of thin-wall sections of 316L stainless steel produced by laser powder-bed fusion processing

Laser powder bed fusion (LBPF) is a method of additive manufacturing (AM) that offers a means to fabricate complex components with features which rely upon the mechanical integrity of thin-wall (less than 0.4 mm thick) structures. The microstructure of a 316L AM thin wall is investigated as metallographically prepared from a cylindrical shell. Optimization is pursued through mechanical polishing and chemical etching to minimize the effects of surface roughness. Microanalysis measurements of the sectioned component reveal the sample has high microstructural fidelity, uniform composition and phase content across grain as well as powder layer boundaries within the thin wall. The results are attributed to a uniform thermal gradient at the part scale during rapid solidification.

147 Sm Neutron Capture Cross Section and Resonances

Measurement of ( n,γ ) cross sections measurements are of high importance to many fields such as radiochemical diagnostics, technical nuclear forensics, nuclear physics and astrophysics, nuclear criticality safety, advanced reactors, and isotope production. For these applications an accurate characterization of the resonances in the resolved resonance region is important. In the energy range of the resonance region neutron capture, and scattering are possible so the total resonance width Γ is the sum of the gamma and neutron widths Γ = Γ γ +Γ n .

Toward Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Neutral Pion Cross Section Measurements at ICARUS

At ICARUS and the broader Short-Baseline Neutrino Program, few neutrino interaction channels offer as much utility as those producing neutral pions, which are an important background to electron neutrino searches and provide a standard candle for calibrating the electromagnetic shower energy scale. Beyond this, measurements of neutrino-induced neutral pions offer a probe of resonant interactions that are relevant to future accelerator neutrino experiments like the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. In this document, a measurement of charged-current muon neutrino interactions in liquid argon with a single neutral pion in the final state is presented, making use of neutrino interaction events recorded with the ICARUS T600 detector at Fermilab while exposed to the Booster Neutrino Beam. Event selection is carried out with a fully-automated machine learning reconstruction framework, allowing for the extraction of single-differential cross section measurements as a function of muon and neutral pion kinematic observables.

MAMBA: A Prototype Modern Modular Bubble Chamber for Precision Measurement of Neutrino Nucleus Cross Sections

High precision measurements of neutrino interactions are essential for the success of future neutrino oscillation experiments. Understanding the interaction rate and precise energy spectrum requires understanding of neutrino interactions and nuclear effects. Measuring interactions in a light nuclear target , such as Hydrogen or deuterium, would provide highly valuable input to reduce reduce the uncertainties associated with neutrino-nucleus cross sections, relevant for upcoming experiments like the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K). A bubble chamber presents an opportunity to study a light nuclear target using hydrogen in the liquid phase as a working fluid. However historical hydrogen bubble chamber designs if placed in modern neutrino beams would miss a significant fraction of the total number of available interactions. We present a bubble chamber prototype, MAMBA, which will be used to investigate strategies for inexpensively enabling continuous cycling through improved cooling at scale and expanding the active time of historic bubble chambers. MAMBA aims to demonstrate the feasibility of precision neutrino–nucleon measurements at conditions comparable to modern beams.

The synthesis of thin wall sections that are only 0.4 mm thick is achieved with LPBF AM. Sample preparation is optimized using metallographic polishing to produce samples with only 0.3 um rms roughness for scanning electron microanalysis with EBSD and EDS. A fully austenitic 316L phase is found without evidence of secondary phases. Unlike some AM products that can readily evidence composition segregation due to solute rejection as attributable to temperature gradients within the solidification

Progress toward differential cross-section measurements of coherent charged-pion production in charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with SBND

Coherent charged pion production in charged-current muon neutrino–nucleus interactions provides a clean experimental signature and enables an excellent estimate of the neutrino energy, making it particularly valuable for neutrino flux constraints and oscillation analyses in future long-baseline experiments. Despite its importance, theoretical modeling of this process remains challenging, especially in the low-energy region below 1 GeV and its dependence on the nuclear target. The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) offers a unique opportunity to study coherent charged pion production using neutrinos in the few-hundred-MeV energy range from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) interacting with an argon target (A = 40), with unprecedented statistics expected to yield approximately three thousand signal events in SBND’s BNB data with 3.5 x 10^20 protons on target. This analysis aims to achieve the first differential cross-section measurement of charged-current coherent charged pion production on argon, as well as the first measurement of this process using BNB neutrinos.
