Control and protection system for paralleled modular static inverter-converter systems

A control and protection system was developed for use with a paralleled 2.5-kWe-per-module static inverter-converter system. The control and protection system senses internal and external fault parameters such as voltage, frequency, current, and paralleling current unbalance. A logic system controls contactors to isolate defective power conditioners or loads. The system sequences contactor operation to automatically control parallel operation, startup, and fault isolation. Transient overload protection and fault checking sequences are included. The operation and performance of a control and protection system, with detailed circuit descriptions, are presented.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system optimization study. Volume 5A-2: Users manual for Space shuttle orbit injection system analysis (SOPSA)

SOPSA (Shuttle Orbit Injection Propulsion System Analysis) is a computer program to aid in the preliminary design of propellant feed systems for the space shuttle orbiter main engines. The primary purpose of the program is to evaluate propellant tank ullage pressure requirements imposed by the need to accelerate propellants rapidly during the engine start sequence. These requirements can influence the system design for a given engine as well as the suitability of a given system for use with different engines. During the vehicle design phase, the SOPSA program is used to establish feed system weight variations as a function of nominal line diameter and component and line configurations. The weight data are used in conjunction with pertinent cost data to establish optimum feed system designs.

Acquisition/expulsion system for earth orbital propulsion system study. Volume 5: Earth storable design

A comprehensive analysis and parametric design effort was conducted under the earth-storable phase of the program. Passive Acquisition/expulsion system concepts were evaluated for a reusable Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) application. The passive surface tension technique for providing gas free liquid on demand was superior to other propellant acquisition methods. Systems using fine mesh screens can provide the requisite stability and satisfy OMS mission requirements. Both fine mesh screen liner and trap systems were given detailed consideration in the parametric design, and trap systems were selected for this particular application. These systems are compatible with the 100- to 500-manned mission reuse requirements.

Two techniques for eliminating luminol interference material and flow system configurations for luminol and firefly luciferase systems

Two methods for eliminating luminol interference materials are described. One method eliminates interference from organic material by pre-reacting a sample with dilute hydrogen peroxide. The reaction rate resolution method for eliminating inorganic forms of interference is also described. The combination of the two methods makes the luminol system more specific for bacteria. Flow system designs for both the firefly luciferase and luminol bacteria detection systems are described. The firefly luciferase flow system incorporating nitric acid extraction and optimal dilutions has a functional sensitivity of 3 x 100,000 E. coli/ml. The luminol flow system incorporates the hydrogen peroxide pretreatment and the reaction rate resolution techniques for eliminating interference. The functional sensitivity of the luminol flow system is 1 x 10,000 E. coli/ml.
