Blackstart of Power Grids with Inverter-Based Resources: Preprint

This paper presents the findings of our investigation into inverter-based resource- (IBR-) driven blackstart of electric grids. Four potential black-start configurations with different setups are presented. To evaluate the technical feasibility of IBR-driven black start in the four configurations, a behavioral model of inverters that mimics current-limited inverter operation is developed using variable resistors in the MATLAB Simulink/Simscape environment. The inverter model is connected to an induction motor through transformers and a transmission line to simulate its startup. Simulation results show that even with the limited current supply capability of inverters because of their physical constraints, IBRs can black-start a motor under certain conditions. Results also show that by using soft-start techniques, such as ramped supply voltage, inrush currents can be reduced, thereby expanding the conditions under which IBRs can provide black-start support. Simulation results with different scenarios lead to discussions and key takeaways that could be valuable for further IBR-driven black-start research.

HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER IN HUMIDIFYING REGENERATOR FOR A SUB-ATMOSPHERIC HYBRID HEAT ENGINE

Heat and mass transfer processes in advanced modular sub-atmospheric hybrid heat engine have been evaluated for technical and economic feasibility. The presented concept combines fossil fuel energy conversion in a sub-atmospheric air turbine coupled with a reciprocating internal combustion engine to create a hybrid system for power generation. This system can achieve over 65% of net electrical or mechanical power conversion efficiency. The uniqueness of the advanced modular sub-atmospheric hybrid heat engine is in the operating conditions of the air turbine which operates at sub-atmospheric pressure and low temperature and produces power at high efficiency. This is possible due to a unique combination of the system components such as sub-atmospheric air turbine, humidifying air regenerator, and compressor inlet air cooling system. The humidifying air regenerator is the core component of the advanced sub-atmospheric turbine, which makes the turbine ultra-high efficient. It is a regenerative heat-mass exchanger to increase the working fluid (humid air) mass flow rate before the turbine and decrease the mass flow rate after the turbine. It is found that increased heat and mass transfer rate or increased air humidification in humidifying air regenerator would allow the turbine operating at lower temperature and increased efficiency. Optimal heat and mass transfer rates were found for higher efficiency, lower costs, and smaller footprint of the hybrid engine. The results of feasibility study of heat and mass transfer processes in the humidifying air regenerator are presented in this paper.

Fractionation of Lignocellulosic Biomass into High-Value Products - CRADA Report

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has developed a process for adding value in the biomass feedstock supply chain. The key aspects of this process include: (1) anaerobic and chemical treatment of biomass during storage, (2) fractionation of biomass into conversion-ready feedstock and high-value coproducts, and (3) high-moisture pelleting to increase the bulk density and stabilize the feedstock. The purpose of the chemical treatment is to overcome the recalcitrant nature of the feedstock to improve the biochemical conversion process of breaking down the biomass into sugars. To maximize the utilization of the biomass, the feedstock can be fractionated into hemicellulose and lignin rich fractions. Finally, to increase the materials overall energy density, produce a shelf-stable material, and to facilitate transport, the feedstock is densified in a pelleting process. The first two steps of the processes have been verified at bench scale showing an improvement in theoretical glucose yield from 23.1% to 44.5% and an improvement in theoretical xylose yield from 8.9% to 23.1% from ground corn stover. It is hypothesized that densification will further increase the carbohydrate yield in the sample. The goal of this project was to evaluate the technical feasibility and process economics of the above process and to provide preliminary data to Golden Leaf Energy, Inc to access its potential commercialization for converting biomass to ethanol and renewable chemicals. Corn stover (CS), the largest available agricultural residue, and Chinese tallow (CT), an invasive wood species with no current commercial value, were chosen as feedstocks for this project.

A Unified Testing Platform to Mature Blockchain Applications for Grid Emulation Environments

Blockchain technology is a relatively novel technology that can be used to develop more decentralized, autonomous and tamper-evident solutions. A feature that can aid Transactive Energy Systems to reach their goals by enabling individual actors to communicate and reach consensus with other participants in a more decentralized fashion. However, technical barriers to evaluate and adopt this type of technology within the electrical domain still exist. To facilitate this task, BLOSEM Unified Testing Platform (UTP), a DOE-sponsored, multi-lab effort intends to accelerate the development of solutions by offering a common set of reusable services that can be used to interconnect existent grid tools with blockchain services. UTP is intended to serve as development platform that can provide application engineers with the technical means to evaluate potential blockchain solutions, by enabling them to concentrate on the actual application functionalities while at the same time abstracting the connectivity and performance measurement tasks. The use of BLOSEM UTP is further demonstrated by implementing two potential use cases that are intended to validate both the feasibility of implementing these applications as blockchain-based solutions while also demonstrating the features provided by UTP.

Evaluation Challenges for the Application of Extended Reality Devices in Medicine

Augmented and virtual reality devices are being actively investigated and implemented for a wide range of medical uses. However, significant gaps in the evaluation of these medical devices and applications hinder their regulatory evaluation. Addressing these gaps is critical to demonstrating the devices’ safety and effectiveness. We outline the key technical and clinical evaluation challenges discussed during the US Food and Drug Administration’s public workshop, “Medical Extended Reality: Toward Best Evaluation Practices for Virtual and Augmented Reality in Medicine” and future directions for evaluation method development. Evaluation challenges were categorized into several key technical and clinical areas. Finally, we highlight current efforts in the standards communities and illustrate connections between the evaluation challenges and the intended uses of the medical extended reality (MXR) devices. Participants concluded that additional research is needed to assess the safety and effectiveness of MXR devices across the use cases.

WTS-4 system verification unit for wind/hydroelectric integration study

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) initiated a study to investigate the concept of integrating 100 MW of wind energy from megawatt-size wind turbines with the Federal hydroelectric system. As a part of the study, one large wind turbine was purchased through the competitive bid process and is now being installed to serve as a system verification unit (SVU). Reclamation negotiated an agreement with NASA to provide technical management of the project for the design, fabrication, installation, testing, and initial operation. Hamilton Standard was awarded a contract to furnish and install its WTS-4 wind turbine rated at 4 MW at a site near Medicine Bow, Wyoming. The purposes for installing the SVU are to fully evaluate the wind/hydro integration concept, make technical evaluation of the hardware design, train personnel in the technology, evaluate operation and maintenance aspects, and evaluate associated environmental impacts. The SVU will be operational in June 1982. Data from the WTS-4 and from a second SVU, Boeing's MOD-2, will be used to prepare a final design for a 100-MW farm if Congress authorizes the project.

Composites for Advanced Drive Systems, A Systems Analysis-Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology (RVLT)

Rotorcraft propulsion systems are continually looking to improve power density; that is reducing weight and increasing power throughput. In order to advance rotorcraft propulsion system technology, NASA Glenn Research Center (NGRC) contracted Boeing Vertical Lift (Contract #NNA15AB12B, Task Order NNA16BE07T) to perform system level benefit assessments for incorporation of composite materials into rotorcraft transmission gear and shaft systems, in the rotating frame. In general, the environment inside a typical rotorcraft transmission is aggressive for typical composite materials. Design challenges in the rotating frame and related safety risks must be understood and accounted for in the design. Boeing developed a technical approach that evaluated a relatively large population of rotorcraft main transmissions. This technical approach took rotorcraft from various size classes and configurations and applied parametric weight estimating principles to assess the performance impact of composite hybrid technologies inside transmissions, in the rotating frame. Parametric weight estimates showed that composite hybrid technologies account for an average 9% weight savings over the baseline transmissions. More weight savings may be observed when accounting for quantity of transmissions in an aircraft configuration and benefits to airframe, landing gear, and fuel systems. A weight reduction of 595 lbs was calculated for NASA's Large Civil Tilt Rotor (LCTR2) by utilizing composite hybrid components inside the Prop-Rotor Transmission in the rotating frame and accounting for design changes to the airframe, landing gear, and fuel system. In order to develop composite hybrid technologies, sub-scale and full-scale testing should continue, building on the work that NGRC has begun. Design and testing efforts should focus on technical challenges, such as joint and attachment interfaces, temperature effects, inspection procedures, and fault detection. It is recommended to address technical challenges with targeted research and development efforts, conducted at relevant scale, prior to incorporating composite hybrid technologies within the rotating frame of helicopter transmissions.
