Geological applications of thermal-inertia mapping from satellite

The author has identified the following significant results. A more efficient algorithm for calculating surface temperature was developed. This algorithm was determined to be essentially exact, and relative accuracies in determining thermal inertia of the finite difference and the linear Fourier series algorithms were approximately 5% for both. A procedure for performing geometric registration was developed.

Geologic application of thermal-inertia mapping from satellite

The author has identified the following significant results. A theoretical evaluation of the proportional and linear relationship between absolute and relative thermal inertia was performed, and a potentially more accurate expression for absolute thermal inertia mapping was proposed.

Geologic application of thermal-inertia mapping from satellite

The author has identified the following significant results. The proportional and linear relationship between absolute and relative thermal inertia was theoretically evaluated, and a more accurate expression for thermal inertia was proposed. Radiometric and meteorological data from three stations in the Powder River Basin were acquired, as well as 400 miles of low altitude scanner data between July 25-28.

Geologic application of thermal-inertia mapping from satellite

The author has identified the following significant results. Approximately 400 miles of low altitude scanner data of good quality was acquired over the Powder River Basin between 13-16 Oct. 1978. Radiometric and meteorological data from three ground stations were also acquired in support of low altitude U.S.G.S. overflights.

Geologic applications of thermal-inertia mapping from satellite

The author has identified the following significant results. After digitization, a noise rejection filter was applied to data obtained by USGS aircraft. An albedo image was formed by combining three bands of visible data. Along with the day and nighttime thermal data, the albedo image was used to construct a relative thermal-inertia image. This image, registered to a topographic base, shows there are thermal property differences in the vicinity of the contact between the Fort Union and Wasatch formations in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming.

Investigation of the application of HCMM thermal data to snow hydrology

The author has identified the following significant results. Analysis of HCMM digital thermal data for daytime passes over the Salt-Verde Watershed area on five dates show a gradual depletion of snow cover in the watershed (and in the Little Colorado Watershed to the north) from a maximum on February 9th to a nearly complete disappearance of the snow pack by April 15th. Temperature contours correspond closely with the snowline observed in the visible image.
