Electronic transport and thermoelectricity in the selenospinel Cu 6—x Fe 4+x Sn 12 Se 32

Here, we report a study of selenospinel Cu 6—x Fe 4+x Sn 12 Se 32 (x = 0, 1, 2) single crystals, which crystallize in a cubic structure with the F$d$$\overline{3}$$m$ space group, and show typical semiconducting behavior. The large discrepancy between the activation energy for electrical conductivity E ρ (32.3–69.8 meV), and for thermopower E S (3.2–11.5 meV), indicates a polaronic transport mechanism between 350 and 50 K. With decreasing temperature, it evolves into variable-range hopping conduction. Furthermore, the heat capacity shows a hump around 25(5) K and diverges from the Debye T 3 law at low temperatures, indicating the observation of structural glassy features in these crystalline solids.

Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of the Complex Zintl Phase Eu 9 Zn 4.5 As 9 : A Candidate Topological Insulator and Thermoelectric Material

Reported are the synthesis and detailed analysis of the crystal and electronic structure of the novel Zintl phase Eu 9 Zn 4.5 As 9 . This material was identified in the densely populated Eu–Zn–As compositional space. For structure determination and for property measurements, suitable single crystals of this compound were grown from either Sn- or Pb-flux. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods indicate that Eu 9 Zn 4.5 As 9 crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with the space group Pnma (a = 12.1953(7) Å, b = 4.3730(2) Å, c = 42.674(2) Å) and is formally isostructural to Ca 9 Mn 4+x Sb 9 , the less common “9–4–9” type. The structure is heavily disordered, with multiple partially occupied sites, yet, according to the Zintl-Klemm formalism, a charge-balanced composition (Eu 2+ ) 9 (Zn 2+ ) 4.5 (As 3− ) 9 is attained. Electronic structure calculations for a model, disorder-free structure indicate no energy gap between the valence and the conduction bands and suggest (semi)metallic behavior. Preliminary susceptibility measurements confirm the expected divalent nature of Eu 2+ ([Xe] 4 f 7 ground state).

Scanning Probe Microscope to Map Thermal and Thermoelectric Properties of Combinatorial Materials

The combinatorial methodology offers a high-throughput process for developing radiation-resistant sensor materials for nuclear energy applications through the synthesis and screening of large numbers of compositions and processing conditions in a single process. The combinatorial materials fabrication coupled with an automated screening process enables us to identify the optimal materials composition and processing conditions that yield both desired properties and required irradiation resistance in the most efficient and economic manner. The report focuses on the development of scanning probe technique to map with high resolution the thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of combinatory materials with gradient compositions, which has been a key challenge in combinatory materials science. The above three properties play important roles in many sensor materials for nuclear energy applications.

Investigating the Role of Vacancies on the Thermoelectric Properties of EuCuSb‐Eu 2 ZnSb 2 Alloys

Abstract AMX compounds with the ZrBeSi structure tolerate a vacancy concentration of up to 50 % on the M ‐site in the planar MX ‐layers. Here, we investigate the impact of vacancies on the thermal and electronic properties across the full EuCu 1− x Zn 0.5 x Sb solid solution. The transition from a fully‐occupied honeycomb layer (EuCuSb) to one with a quarter of the atoms missing (EuZn 0.5 Sb) leads to non‐linear bond expansion in the honeycomb layer, increasing atomic displacement parameters on the M and Sb‐sites, and significant lattice softening. This, combined with a rapid increase in point defect scattering, causes the lattice thermal conductivity to decrease from 3 to 0.5 W mK −1 at 300 K. The effect of vacancies on the electronic properties is more nuanced; we see a small increase in effective mass, large increase in band gap, and decrease in carrier concentration. Ultimately, the maximum zT increases from 0.09 to 0.7 as we go from EuCuSb to EuZn 0.5 Sb.

A plausible method of preparing the ideal p-n junction interface of a thermoelectric material by surface doping

Recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) crystals make it possible to realize an ideal interface structure that is required for device applications. Specifically, a p-n junction made of 2D crystals is predicted to exhibit an atomically well-defined interface that will lead to high device performance. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, a simple surface treatment was shown to allow the possible formation of such an interface. Furthermore, Ta adsorption on the surface of a p-doped SnSe shifts the valence band maximum towards the higher binding energy due to the charge transfer from Ta to SnSe that is highly localized at the surface due to the layered structure of SnSe. As a result, the charge carriers of the surface are changed from holes of its bulk characteristics to electrons, while the bulk remains as a p-type semiconductor. This observation suggests that the well-defined interface of a p-n junction with an atomically thin n-region is formed between Ta-adsorbed surface and bulk.
