Weak, shallow, dry convection over Angola increases offshore stratocumulus cloud droplet number concentrations

Boundary-layer cloud interactions involving shortwave-absorbing aerosols remain one of the least understood aerosol influences on climate. Here, we find the highest stratocumulus cloud droplet number concentrations over the southeast Atlantic occur when agricultural fires coincide with synoptically-weakened surface warming over Angola, occurring June-early August. Dry convection fills a shallow continental boundary layer with smoke, and a nighttime (local solar time 2-9) land breeze transports the aerosol into the marine boundary layer. Offshore aerosol transport is strengthened by low-level easterlies from a continental pressure high southeast of Angola. Simultaneously, the South Atlantic subtropical high is weaker, allowing extensive dispersal of aerosol offshore into the boundary layer, obscuring cloud brightening from shipping. Meteorological co-variation at synoptic scales compensates for cloud brightening by the smoke. Outgoing shortwave radiation increases by 15–20% of the monthly mean in June and July when offshore droplet numbers are less but the stratocumulus deck is more developed.

The Future Polarized Target Program at Jefferson Lab

Polarized targets have played a crucial role in Jefferson Lab's exploration of nuclear structure over the past four decades. The three original experimental halls have seen 19 separate installations of polarized solid or gas targets for use in the particle physics scattering experiments, and this trend will continue in the next decade. Five polarized target systems are in preparation for use at JLab in the coming years. Hall B will see the use of two solid polarized targets, one longitudinally polarized to the beam, the other transversely, as well as a novel 3He gas polarized target. In Hall C, new experiments will augment the tensor polarization in dynamically polarized solids. Plans are under development to bring a polarized solid target to Jefferson Lab's photon beam hall, Hall D, for the first time. To support these efforts, the JLab polarized target group is building a test laboratory to develop dynamic nuclear polarization techniques, as well as an apparatus to irradiate target material using electrons from JLab's injector test facility. In this talk, we will explore the development progress and plans for each of these efforts.

Dopant adsorption as a function of bulk concentration at a near 42º (100) twist grain boundary in SrTiO3

The enrichment of grain boundaries with dopant atoms is of critical importance for the macroscopic physical properties of materials. In thermodynamic equilibrium the Gibbs adsorption isotherm relates grain boundary excess of dopant atoms, their chemical potential in the adjacent bulk, and the respective interface energy. This study has used bicrystals with a near 42º (100) twist grain boundary in SrTiO3 to demonstrate that different kinetic pathways of Fe dopant atom additions converge towards comparable grain boundary configurations. Despite differences in bulk chemical potentials remarkably similar grain boundary excess quantities were observed. The experimental results indicate the general experimental feasibility to establish quantitative relationships between variations of grain boundary energy, interfacial excess, and overall dopant concentration. Improved experimental counting statistics are needed to distinguish solute interface excess as a function of bulk chemical potential.

Intensified atomic utilization efficiency of single-atom catalysts for nitrate conversion via electrified nanoporous membrane

Conventional electrochemical reactors for nitrate reduction typically suffer from limited reaction efficiency when applied for real-world water treatment due to poor utilization of electrocatalytic active sites. Here, we applied nanoporous electrofiltration to intensify atomic utilization by incorporating single-atom catalysts into an electrified membrane for reducing low-concentration nitrate to ammonia under realistic water conditions. We enhance the exposure of single atoms in nanopores by coating the catalysts on a carbon nanotube–interwoven membrane framework. Electrofiltration intensifies the transport and adsorption of nitrate in confined nanopores with highly exposed single-atom active sites to enhance reduction. The membrane enables a superior ammonia turnover frequency of 15.1 grams of nitrogen per gram of metal per hour, up to four orders of magnitude higher than that reported in the literature, under both high removal efficiency and Faradaic efficiency of over 86% when treating influents with a low nitrate concentration of 100 milligrams of nitrogen per liter in a residence time on the order of seconds.

Establishing accretion flares from supermassive black holes as a source of high-energy neutrinos

ABSTRACT The origin of cosmic high-energy neutrinos remains largely unexplained. For high-energy neutrino alerts from IceCube, a coincidence with time-variable emission has been seen for three different types of accreting black holes: (1) a gamma-ray flare from a blazar (TXS 0506+056), (2) an optical transient following a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE; AT2019dsg), and (3) an optical outburst from an active galactic nucleus (AGN; AT2019fdr). For the latter two sources, infrared follow-up observations revealed a powerful reverberation signal due to dust heated by the flare. This discovery motivates a systematic study of neutrino emission from all supermassive black hole with similar dust echoes. Because dust reprocessing is agnostic to the origin of the outburst, our work unifies TDEs and high-amplitude flares from AGN into a population that we dub accretion flares. Besides the two known events, we uncover a third flare that is coincident with a PeV-scale neutrino (AT2019aalc). Based solely on the optical and infrared properties, we estimate a significance of 3.6σ for this association of high-energy neutrinos with three accretion flares. Our results imply that at least ∼10 per cent of the IceCube high-energy neutrino alerts could be due to accretion flares. This is surprising because the sum of the fluence of these flares is at least three orders of magnitude lower compared to the total fluence of normal AGN. It thus appears that the efficiency of high-energy neutrino production in accretion flares is increased compared to non-flaring AGN. We speculate that this can be explained by the high Eddington ratio of the flares.

Improved constraints on hematite refractive index for estimating climatic effects of dust aerosols

Abstract Uncertainty in desert dust composition poses a big challenge to understanding Earth’s climate across different epochs. Of particular concern is hematite, an iron-oxide mineral dominating the solar absorption by dust particles, for which current estimates of absorption capacity vary by over two orders of magnitude. Here, we show that laboratory measurements of dust composition, absorption, and scattering provide valuable constraints on the absorption potential of hematite, substantially narrowing its range of plausible values. The success of this constraint is supported by results from an atmospheric transport model compared with station-based measurements. Additionally, we identify substantial bias in simulating hematite abundance in dust aerosols with current soil mineralogy descriptions, underscoring the necessity for improved data sources. Encouragingly, the next-generation imaging spectroscopy remote sensing data hold promise for capturing the spatial variability of hematite. These insights have implications for enhancing dust modeling, thus contributing to efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
