Analysis of Neutral B -Meson Decays into Two Muons

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay B s 0 → μ + μ - and searches for the decays B 0 → μ + μ - and B s 0 → μ + μ - γ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of 9 fb - 1 . The branching fraction B ( B s 0 → μ + μ - ) = ( 3.0 9 - 0.43 - 0.11 + 0.46 + 0.15 ) × 10 - 9 and the effective lifetime τ ( B s 0 → μ + μ - ) = 2.07 ± 0.29 ± 0.03 ps are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for B 0 → μ + μ - and B s 0 → μ + μ - γ decays is found and upper limits B ( B 0 → μ + μ - ) < 2.6 × 10 - 10 and B ( B s 0 → μ + μ - γ ) < 2.0 × 10 - 9 at the 95% C.L. are determined, where the latter is limited to the range m μ μ > 4.9 GeV / c 2 . The results are in agreement with the standard model expectations.

First observation of Λ c + → Λ K + π 0 and evidence of Λ c + → Λ K + π + π −

We present the first observation of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → Λ K + π 0 with a significance of 5.7 σ and the first evidence of Λ c + → Λ K + π + π − decay with a significance of 3.1 σ , based on e + e − annihilation data recorded by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6.4 fb − 1 , in the center-of-mass energy range from 4.600 to 4.950 GeV. We determine the branching fractions of Λ c + → Λ K + π 0 and Λ c + → Λ K + π + π − relative to their Cabibbo-favored counterparts to be B ( Λ c + → Λ K + π 0 ) B ( Λ c + → Λ π + π 0 ) = ( 2.09 ± 0.3 9 stat ± 0.0 7 syst ) × 10 − 2 and B ( Λ c + → Λ K + π + π − ) B ( Λ c + → Λ π + π + π − ) = ( 1.13 ± 0.4 1 stat ± 0.0 6 syst ) × 10 − 2 , respectively. Moreover, by combining our measured result with the world average of B ( Λ c + → Λ π + π 0 ) , we obtain the branching fraction B ( Λ c + → Λ K + π 0 ) = ( 1.49 ± 0.2 7 stat ± 0.0 5 syst ± 0.0 8 ref ) × 10 − 3 . This result significantly departs from theoretical predictions based on quark S U ( 3 ) flavor symmetry, which is underpinned by the presumption of meson pair S -wave amplitude dominance. Observation of B$^0_s$ mesons and measurement of the B$^0_s$/B$^+$ yield ratio in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The B$^0_s$ and B$^+$ production yields are measured in PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The data sample, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb$^{-1}$. The mesons are reconstructed in the exclusive decay channels B$^0_s$$\to$ J/$\psi(\mu^+\mu^-)\phi($K$^+$K$^-)$ and B$^+$$\to$ J/$\psi(\mu^+\mu^-)$K$^+$. The B$^0_s$ meson is observed with a statistical significance in excess of five standard deviations for the first time in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The measurements are performed as functions of the transverse momentum of the B mesons and of the PbPb collision centrality. The ratio of production yields of B$^0_s$ and B$^+$ is measured and compared to theoretical models that include quark recombination effects.

Binding energy of the 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 tetraquark from lattice QCD with relativistic and nonrelativistic heavy-quark actions

We present a new determination of the $b\bar{b}$𝑢⁢𝑑 (𝐽 𝑃 = 1 + , 𝐼 = 0) tetraquark binding energy using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with domain-wall light quarks and a nonperturbatively tuned three-parameter anisotropic-clover “relativistic” action for the 𝑏 quarks. We also perform a direct comparison with a reanalysis of data generated in prior work using a lattice-nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) action for the 𝑏 quarks and otherwise identical parameters. Using the new data with relativistic 𝑏 quarks from seven different ensembles with multiple lattice spacings and pion masses, we perform combined chiral and continuum extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) RHQ =(−76 ±23) MeV. For the NRQCD data from five ensembles, we perform chiral-only extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) NRQCD = (−74 ±17 ±10) MeV. The lower magnitude of the results obtained here, compared to the original analysis in [Phys. Rev. D 100, 014503 (2019)], is due to the use of the symmetric parts of the correlation matrices with local four-quark operators only.

Measurement of the time-integrated 𝐶⁢𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$ decays using opposite-side flavor tagging at Belle and Belle II

We measure the time-integrated 𝐶⁢𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$ decays reconstructed in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → $c\bar{c}$ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 and 428 fb −1 , respectively. To infer the flavor of the 𝐷 0 meson, we exploit the correlation between the flavor of the reconstructed decay and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → $c\bar{c}$ event. This results in a sample which is independent from any other previously used at Belle or Belle II. The result, 𝐴 𝐶⁢𝑃 ⁡(𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$)=(1.3±2.0±0.2)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is consistent with previous determinations and with 𝐶⁢𝑃 symmetry.

Observation of the decays 𝐵 + → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ and 𝐵 0 → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) 0⁢ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$

We report the first observation of the two-body baryonic decays 𝐵 + → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ and 𝐵 0 → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) 0⁢ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$ with significances of 7.3⁢𝜎 and 6.2⁢𝜎, respectively, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. The branching fractions are measured to be ℬ⁡(𝐵 + → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$) = (5.74 ± 1.11 ± 0.4⁢2$^{+2.47}_{−1.53}$) ×10 −4 and ℬ⁡(𝐵 0 → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) 0⁢ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$) = (4.83 ± 1.12 ± 0.3⁢7$^{+0.72}_{−0.60}$) ×10 −4 . The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the absolute branching fractions of $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ or $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$ decays. The data samples used for this analysis have integrated luminosities of 711 fb −1 and 365 fb −1 , and were collected at the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance by the Belle and Belle II detectors operating at the KEKB and SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − colliders, respectively.

Search for Higgs boson decays into a pair of pseudoscalar particles in the $bbμμ$ final state with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

This paper presents a search for decays of the Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV into a pair of new pseudoscalar particles, $H→aa$, where one a-boson decays into a b-quark pair and the other into a muon pair. The search uses 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV recorded between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. A narrow dimuon resonance is searched for in the invariant mass spectrum between 16 GeV and 62 GeV. The largest excess of events above the Standard Model backgrounds is observed at a dimuon invariant mass of 52 GeV and corresponds to a local (global) significance of 3.3σ (1.7σ). Upper limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to the $bbμμ$ final state, $B(H→aa→bbμμ)$, and are in the range 0.2-4.0×10 -4 , depending on the signal mass hypothesis.

Design and Construction of a High-Resolution Hodoscope for the GlueX Experiment with High-Statistics Analysis of the p0, ¿, and ¿1 Photoproduction Cross Sections from the RadPhi Experiment

Differential cross sections for forward-angle photoproduction of p0, ¿, and ¿ 1 pseudoscalar mesons were measured using data from the RadPhi experiment conducted in Hall B at Jef ferson Lab. RadPhi utilized a tagged bremsstrahlung photon beam incident on a stationary 9Be target, with a detector system configured to trigger on a recoil proton in coincidence with multiple neutral showers in the calorimeter. Events were reconstructed and subjected to kinematic constraints, with background suppressed via sideband subtraction guided by Monte Carlo modeling of background contributions. Cross sections were extracted over the photon energy range 4.4– 5.4 GeV and binned in invariant momentum transfer t, providing measurements from one of the first high-statistics experiments of forward ¿ and ¿1 pro duction from a nuclear target at these energies. Acceptance corrections were applied using a detailed GEANT-based simulation of the detector geometry and response. The resulting cross sections are consistent with 2020 CLAS results, when scaled by the number of protons in beryllium, and show broad agreement with other data and theoretical models. In parallel, a high-resolution photon tagger detector, the Tagger Microscope (TAGM), was designed, constructed, and commissioned for the GlueX experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. The TAGM was developed to provide high-rate tagging capability in the coherent bremsstrahlung peak by detecting post-bremsstrahlung electrons across a one GeV range along the focal plane of the tagging spectrometer. The detector consists of a 5ˆ102 array of 2ˆ2 mm2 square BCF-20 plastic scintillating fibers thermally fused to BCF-98 light guide fibers optically coupled to silicon photomultipliers. These fibers are mounted in a precision machined framework enabling fine positional adjustments to maintain precise alignment with post-bremsstrahlung electron trajectories, while ensuring mechanical rigidity, thermal stability, optical isolation, minimal inactive area, and radiation shielding for electronics. The construction effort involved extensive testing of fiber quality, light transmission, thermal fusing, radiation hardness, and defect analysis using SEM and EDX techniques. Following its installation and commissioning, the TAGM became a critical component of the GlueX beamline, enabling high-rate tagging essential for studies of hybrid mesons and gluonic ex citations.

Novel approaches to determine B ± and B 0 meson production fractions

We propose novel methods to determine the ϒ ( 4 S ) → B + B − and ϒ ( 4 S ) → B 0 B ¯ 0 decay rates. The precision to which they and their ratio are known yields at present a limiting uncertainty around 2% in measurements of absolute B decay rates, and thus in a variety of applications, such as precision determinations of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and flavor-symmetry relations. The new methods we propose are based in one case on exploiting the ϒ ( 5 S ) datasets, in the other case on the different average number of charged tracks in B ± and B 0 decays. We estimate future sensitivities using these methods and discuss possible measurements of f d / f u at the (HL-)LHC. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Cross sections of 𝜂 mesons in 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions at forward rapidity at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 500 GeV and central rapidity at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 510 GeV

We present the first measurements of the forward and midrapidity 𝜂-meson cross sections from 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 500 and 510 GeV, respectively. We also report the midrapidity 𝜂/𝜋 0 ratio at 510 GeV. The forward cross section is measured differentially in 𝜂-meson transverse momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) from 1.0 to 6.5 GeV/𝑐 for pseudorapidity 3.0 < |𝜂| < 3.8. The midrapidity cross section is measured from 3.5 to 44 GeV/𝑐 for pseudorapidity |𝜂| < 0.35. Both cross sections serve as critical inputs to an updated global analysis of the 𝜂-meson fragmentation functions.

Low-lying baryon resonances from lattice QCD

Recent results studying the masses and widths of low-lying baryon resonances in lattice QCD are presented. The S-wave Nπ scattering lengths for both total isospins I = 1/2 and I = 3/2 are inferred from the finite-volume spectrum below the inelastic threshold together with the I = 3/2 P-wave containing the Δ(1232) resonance. A lattice QCD computation employing a combined basis of three-quark and meson-baryon interpolating operators with definite momentum to determine the coupled channel $Σπ-N\bar{K}$ scattering amplitude in the Λ(1405) region is also presented. Our results support the picture of a two-pole structure suggested by theoretical approaches based on SU(3) chiral symmetry and unitarity.

Measurement of spin-density matrix elements in ρ ( 770 ) production with a linearly polarized photon beam at E γ = 8.2 – 8.8 GeV

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized 8.5GeV photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson rho(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. Here we confirm a high degree of s-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer t and are able to extract the t-dependence of natural and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full t range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced rho(770) differ by two units are negligible for -t<0.5GeV 2 /c 2 .

Ambiguities in the partial-wave analysis of the photoproduction of pairs of pseudoscalar mesons

Applying the technique of partial-wave analysis, there are cases where more than one set of underlying complex-valued amplitudes can describe the measured observables. These ambiguities can sometimes be resolved using additional information, but assumptions are often required. It is known that the partial-wave analysis of two-pseudoscalar meson systems produced in photoproduction with a linearly polarized photon beam is free from discrete ambiguities stemming from the Barrelet zeros when the nucleon spin is ignored. In this article, we show that continuous ambiguities are possible for certain wave sets, even though the discrete ambiguities do not appear. We also explore ways to resolve these ambiguities and determine the maximal amount of information that can be obtained from analyses that suffer from these continuous ambiguities.
