Development and operation of a real-time data acquisition system for the NASA, Langley Research Center Differential Absorption Lidar

The capabilities of the DIAL data acquisition system (DAS) for the remote measurement of atmospheric trace gas concentrations from ground and aircraft platforms were extended through the purchase and integration of other hardware and the implementation of improved software. An operational manual for the current system is presented. Hardware and peripheral device registers are outlined only as an aid in debugging any DAS problems which may arise.

MS2Planner: improved fragmentation spectra coverage in untargeted mass spectrometry by iterative optimized data acquisition

Motivation: Untargeted mass spectrometry experiments enable the profiling of metabolites in complex biological samples. The collected fragmentation spectra are the metabolite’s fingerprints that are used for molecule identification and discovery. Two main mass spectrometry strategies exist for the collection of fragmentation spectra: data-dependent acquisition (DDA) and data-independent acquisition (DIA). In the DIA strategy, all the metabolites ions in predefined mass-to-charge ratio ranges are co-isolated and co-fragmented, resulting in multiplexed fragmentation spectra that are challenging to annotate. In contrast, in the DDA strategy, fragmentation spectra are dynamically and specifically collected for the most abundant ions observed, causing redundancy and sub-optimal fragmentation spectra collection. Yet, DDA results in less multiplexed fragmentation spectra that can be readily annotated. Results: We introduce the MS2Planner workflow, an Iterative Optimized Data Acquisition strategy that optimizes the number of high-quality fragmentation spectra over multiple experimental acquisitions using topological sorting. Our results showed that MS2Planner increases the annotation rate by 38.6% and is 62.5% more sensitive and 9.4% more specific compared to DDA. Availability and implementation MS2Planner code is available at https://github.com/mohimanilab/MS2Planner. The generation of the inclusion list from MS2Planner was performed with python scripts available at https://github.com/lfnothias/IODA_MS.

An assessment of Landsat data acquisition history on identification and area estimation of corn and soybeans

During the past decade, numerous studies have demonstrated the potential of satellite remote sensing for providing accurate and timely crop area information. This study assessed the impact of Landsat data acquisition history on classification and area estimation accuracy of corn and soybeans. Multitemporally registered Landsat MSS data from four acquisitions during the 1978 growing season were used in classification of eight sample segments in the U.S. Corn Belt. The results illustrate the importance of selecting Landsat acquisitions based on spectral differences in crops at certain growth stages.

Upgrade of the CAESium-iodide scintillator ARray (CAESAR) electronics and data acquisition system for optimized performance at FRIB

Here, we report on the upgrade of the electronics and data acquisition (DAQ) of the high-efficiency CAESium-iodide scintillator ARray (CAESAR) at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). With the on-going capability ramp-up of FRIB, CAESAR is expected to continue to be an in-demand -ray spectrometer owing to its high detection efficiency, compactness, and modularity, enabling easy integration with additional detection and DAQ systems. Within this context, the CAESAR electronics and DAQ were upgraded to remove obsolete modules, enhance the ease of integration with external instruments, and optimize the DAQ live time. We present the comprehensive results from offline (γ-ray sources) and online (in-beam experiment) commissioning, characterizing the performance of CAESAR’s new electronics and DAQ.

A brief review of ionospheric scintillation fading effects as observed in NASA satellite tracking and data acquisition networks.

Discussion of some results of the effects of ionospheric irregularities on NASA satellite tracking and data acquisition operations. Ionospheric scintillation fading produced by irregularities has been observed at 136 MHz (vhf), 400 MHz (uhf), 1550 MHz (L-band) and 1700 to 2200 MHz (S-band). Details of these observations are presented. Vhf scintillation effects are evident in both auroral and equatorial regions. Fading effects decrease with increasing radio frequency in the auroral region. The same frequency dependence for fading is not observed in the equatorial region. Although there is a seasonal and diurnal character to scintillation in the equatorial region, fading effects are usually more severe than in the auroral region for a given radio frequency. Space diversity measurements indicate that reasonable solutions for vhf telemetry problems are available for either region. Space diversity should provide a solution for microwave frequencies as well. Ionospheric fading amplitude for 1700 MHz is relatively small in the auroral region. In the equatorial region amplitude fading levels for 1550-MHz signals from ATS-5 are often much larger than expected. Observations of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package (ALSEP) operating at 2300 MHz observed near the geomagnetic equator show fading peaks in excess of 15 dB.
