Text-mined dataset of inorganic materials synthesis recipes

Abstract Materials discovery has become significantly facilitated and accelerated by high-throughput ab-initio computations. This ability to rapidly design interesting novel compounds has displaced the materials innovation bottleneck to the development of synthesis routes for the desired material. As there is no a fundamental theory for materials synthesis, one might attempt a data-driven approach for predicting inorganic materials synthesis, but this is impeded by the lack of a comprehensive database containing synthesis processes. To overcome this limitation, we have generated a dataset of “codified recipes” for solid-state synthesis automatically extracted from scientific publications. The dataset consists of 19,488 synthesis entries retrieved from 53,538 solid-state synthesis paragraphs by using text mining and natural language processing approaches. Every entry contains information about target material, starting compounds, operations used and their conditions, as well as the balanced chemical equation of the synthesis reaction. The dataset is publicly available and can be used for data mining of various aspects of inorganic materials synthesis.

Tracking vegetation phenology across diverse biomes using Version 2.0 of the PhenoCam Dataset

Monitoring vegetation phenology is critical for quantifying climate change impacts on ecosystems. We present an extensive dataset of 1783 site-years of phenological data derived from PhenoCam network imagery from 393 digital cameras, situated from tropics to tundra across a wide range of plant functional types, biomes, and climates. Most cameras are located in North America. Every half hour, cameras upload images to the PhenoCam server. Images are displayed in near-real time and provisional data products, including timeseries of the Green Chromatic Coordinate (Gcc), are made publicly available through the project web page (https://phenocam.sr.unh.edu/webcam/gallery/). Processing is conducted separately for each plant functional type in the camera field of view. The PhenoCam Dataset v2.0, described here, has been fully processed and curated, including outlier detection and expert inspection, to ensure high quality data. This dataset can be used to validate satellite data products, to evaluate predictions of land surface models, to interpret the seasonality of ecosystem-scale CO 2 and H 2 O flux data, and to study climate change impacts on the terrestrial biosphere.

Version 4 of the CRU TS monthly high-resolution gridded multivariate climate dataset

CRU TS (Climatic Research Unit gridded Time Series) is a widely used climate dataset on a 0.5° latitude by 0.5° longitude grid over all land domains of the world except Antarctica. It is derived by the interpolation of monthly climate anomalies from extensive networks of weather station observations. Here we describe the construction of a major new version, CRU TS v4. It is updated to span 1901–2018 by the inclusion of additional station observations, and it will be updated annually. The interpolation process has been changed to use angular-distance weighting (ADW), and the production of secondary variables has been revised to better suit this approach. This implementation of ADW provides improved traceability between each gridded value and the input observations, and allows more informative diagnostics that dataset users can utilise to assess how dataset quality might vary geographically.

Harmonized and high-quality datasets of aerosol optical depth at a US continental site, 1997-2018

Aerosol optical depth (AOD) characterizes the aerosol burden in the atmosphere, while its wavelength dependence is a sign of particle size. Long-term records of wavelength-resolved AOD with high quality and suitable continuity are required for climate change assessment. Typically, climate-related studies use AOD products provided by several, and perhaps different, ground-based instruments. The measurements from these instruments often have different accuracy and temporal resolution. To preserve the advantages of these products (high quality) and to reduce their disadvantages (patchy records), we generate a merged dataset obtained from several instruments in which a nearly-continuous AOD record is found at two wavelengths (500 and 870 nm) with high quality and high temporal resolution (1-min) for a 21-yr period (1997-2018). The combined dataset addresses: (1) varying data quality and resolution mismatch of the individual AOD records, and (2) the uncertainty of the merged AOD and its relevance for user-specified needs. The generated dataset will be beneficial for a wide range of applications including aerosol-radiation interactions and their impact in forcing climate change.

A synthetic building operation dataset

Abstract This paper presents a synthetic building operation dataset which includes HVAC, lighting, miscellaneous electric loads (MELs) system operating conditions, occupant counts, environmental parameters, end-use and whole-building energy consumptions at 10-minute intervals. The data is created with 1395 annual simulations using the U.S. DOE detailed medium-sized reference office building, and 30 years’ historical weather data in three typical climates including Miami, San Francisco, and Chicago. Three energy efficiency levels of the building and systems are considered. Assumptions regarding occupant movements, occupants’ diverse temperature preferences, lighting, and MELs are adopted to reflect realistic building operations. A semantic building metadata schema - BRICK, is used to store the building metadata. The dataset is saved in a 1.2 TB of compressed HDF5 file. This dataset can be used in various applications, including building energy and load shape benchmarking, energy model calibration, evaluation of occupant and weather variability and their influences on building performance, algorithm development and testing for thermal and energy load prediction, model predictive control, policy development for reinforcement learning based building controls.

A high-fidelity residential building occupancy detection dataset

Abstract This paper describes development of a data acquisition system used to capture a range of occupancy related modalities from single-family residences, along with the dataset that was generated. The publicly available dataset includes: grayscale images at 32-by-32 pixels, captured every second; audio files, which have undergone processing to remove personally identifiable information; indoor environmental readings, captured every ten seconds; and ground truth binary occupancy status. The data acquisition system, coined the mobile human presence detection (HPDmobile) system, was deployed in six homes for a minimum duration of one month each, and captured all modalities from at least four different locations concurrently inside each home. The environmental modalities are available as captured, but to preserve the privacy and identity of the occupants, images were downsized and audio files went through a series of processing steps, as described in this paper. This dataset adds to a very small body of existing data, with applications to energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality.

A measured energy use, solar production, and building air leakage dataset for a zero energy commercial building

This paper provides an open dataset of measured energy use, solar energy production, and building air leakage data from a 328 m 2 (3,531 ft 2 ) all-electric, zero energy commercial building in Virginia, USA. Over two years of energy use data were collected at 1-hour intervals using circuit-level energy monitors. Over six years of solar energy production data were measured at 1-hour resolution by 56 microinverters (presented as daily and monthly data in this dataset). The building air leakage data was measured post-construction per ASTM-E779 Standard Test Method for Determining Air Leakage Rate by Fan Pressurization and the United States Army Corps (USACE) Building Enclosure Testing procedure; both pressurization and depressurization results are provided. The architectural and engineering (AE) documents are provided to aid researchers and practitioners in reliable modeling of building performance. The paper describes the data collection methods, cleaning, and convergence with weather data. This dataset can be employed to predict, benchmark, and calibrate operational outcomes in zero energy commercial buildings.

U.S. national water and energy land dataset for integrated multisector dynamics research

Abstract Understanding resource demands and tradeoffs among energy, water, and land socioeconomic sectors requires an explicit consideration of spatial scale. However, incorporation of land dynamics within the energy-water nexus has been limited due inconsistent spatial units of observation from disparate data sources. Herein we describe the development of a National Water and Energy Land Dataset (NWELD) for the conterminous United States. NWELD is a 30-m, 86-layer rasterized dataset depicting the land use of mappable components of the United States energy sector life cycles (and related water used for energy), specifically the extraction, development, production, storage, distribution, and operation of eight renewable and non-renewable technologies. Through geospatial processing and programming, the final products were assembled using four different methodologies, each depending upon the nature and availability of raw data sources. For validation, NWELD provided a relatively accurate portrayal of the spatial extent of energy life cycles yet displayed low measures of association with mainstream land cover and land use datasets, indicating the provision of new land use information for the energy-water nexus.

The NEON Daily Isotopic Composition of Environmental Exchanges Dataset

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) provides open-access measurements of stable isotope ratios in atmospheric water vapor (δ 2 H, δ 18 O) and carbon dioxide (δ 13 C) at different tower heights, as well as aggregated biweekly precipitation samples (δ 2 H, δ 18 O) across the United States. These measurements were used to create the NEON Daily Isotopic Composition of Environmental Exchanges (NEON-DICEE) dataset estimating precipitation (P; δ 2 H, δ 18 O), evapotranspiration (ET; δ 2 H, δ 18 O), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE; δ 13 C) isotope ratios. Statistically downscaled precipitation datasets were generated to be consistent with the estimated covariance between isotope ratios and precipitation amounts at daily time scales. Isotope ratios in ET and NEE fluxes were estimated using a mixing-model approach with calibrated NEON tower measurements. NEON-DICEE is publicly available on HydroShare and can be reproduced or modified to fit user specific applications or include additional NEON data records as they become available. The NEON-DICEE dataset can facilitate understanding of terrestrial ecosystem processes through their incorporation into environmental investigations that require daily δ 2 H, δ 18 O, and δ 13 C flux data.

A multi-scale time-series dataset with benchmark for machine learning in decarbonized energy grids

The electric grid is a key enabling infrastructure for the ambitious transition towards carbon neutrality as we grapple with climate change. With deepening penetration of renewable resources, the reliable operation of the electric grid becomes increasingly challenging. In this paper, we present PSML, a first-of-its-kind open-access multi-scale time-series dataset, to aid in the development of data-driven machine learning (ML)-based approaches towards reliable operation of future electric grids. The dataset is synthesized from a joint transmission and distribution electric grid to capture the increasingly important interactions and uncertainties of the grid dynamics, containing power, voltage and current measurements over multiple spatio-temporal scales. Using PSML, we provide state-of-the-art ML benchmarks on three challenging use cases of critical importance to achieve: (i) early detection, accurate classification and localization of dynamic disturbances; (ii) robust hierarchical forecasting of load and renewable energy; and (iii) realistic synthetic generation of physical-law-constrained measurements. We envision that this dataset will provide use-inspired ML research in safety-critical systems, while simultaneously enabling ML researchers to contribute towards decarbonization of energy sectors.

A Dataset of 3D Structural and Simulated Transport Properties of Complex Porous Media

Physical processes that occur within porous materials have wide-ranging applications including - but not limited to - carbon sequestration, battery technology, membranes, oil and gas, geothermal energy, nuclear waste disposal, water resource management. The equations that describe these physical processes have been studied extensively; however, approximating them numerically requires immense computational resources due to the complex behavior that arises from the geometrically-intricate solid boundary conditions in porous materials. Here, we introduce a new dataset of unprecedented scale and breadth, DRP-372: a catalog of 3D geometries, simulation results, and structural properties of samples hosted on the Digital Rocks Portal. The dataset includes 1736 flow and electrical simulation results on 217 samples, which required more than 500 core years of computation. This data can be used for many purposes, such as constructing empirical models, validating new simulation codes, and developing machine learning algorithms that closely match the extensive purely-physical simulation. This article offers a detailed description of the contents of the dataset including the data collection, simulation schemes, and data validation.

Dataset of theoretical multinary perovskite oxides

Perovskite oxides (ternary chemical formula ABO 3 ) are a diverse class of materials with applications including heterogeneous catalysis, solid-oxide fuel cells, thermochemical conversion, and oxygen transport membranes. However, their multicomponent (chemical formula $A_xA^{'}_{1-x}B_yB^{'}_{1-y}O_3$) chemical space is underexplored due to the immense number of possible compositions. To expand the number of computed $A_xA^{'}_{1-x}B_yB^{'}_{1-y}O_3$ compounds we report a dataset of 66,516 theoretical multinary oxides, 59,708 of which are perovskites. First, 69,407 $A_{0.5}A^{'}_{0.5}B_{0.5}B^{'}_{0.5}O_3$ compositions were generated in the a - b + a - Glazer tilting mode using the computationally-inexpensive Structure Prediction and Diagnostic Software (SPuDS) program. Next, we optimized these structures with density functional theory (DFT) using parameters compatible with the Materials Project (MP) database. Our dataset contains these optimized structures and their formation (ΔH f ) and decomposition enthalpies (ΔH d ) computed relative to MP tabulated elemental references and competing phases, respectively. This dataset can be mined, used to train machine learning models, and rapidly and systematically expanded by optimizing more SPuDS-generated $A_{0.5}A^{'}_{0.5}B_{0.5}B^{'}_{0.5}O_3$ perovskite structures using MP-compatible DFT calculations.

A labeled dataset for building HVAC systems operating in faulted and fault-free states

Abstract Open data is fueling innovation across many fields. In the domain of building science, datasets that can be used to inform the development of operational applications - for example new control algorithms and performance analysis methods - are extremely difficult to come by. This article summarizes the development and content of the largest known public dataset of building system operations in faulted and fault free states. It covers the most common HVAC systems and configurations in commercial buildings, across a range of climates, fault types, and fault severities. The time series points that are contained in the dataset include measurements that are commonly encountered in existing buildings as well as some that are less typical. Simulation tools, experimental test facilities, and in-situ field operation were used to generate the data. To inform more data-hungry algorithms, most of the simulated data cover a year of operation for each fault-severity combination. The data set is a significant expansion of that first published by the lead authors in 2020.

Spatially distributed atmospheric boundary layer properties in Houston – A value-added observational dataset

Abstract In 2022, Houston, TX became a nexus for field campaigns aiming to further our understanding of the feedbacks between convective clouds, aerosols and atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) properties. Houston’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and Galveston Bay motivated the collection of spatially distributed observations to disentangle coastal and urban processes. This paper presents a value-added ABL dataset derived from observations collected by eight research teams over 46 days between 2 June - 18 September 2022. The dataset spans 14 sites distributed within a ~80-km radius around Houston. Measurements from three types of instruments are analyzed to objectively provide estimates of nine ABL parameters, both thermodynamic (potential temperature, and relative humidity profiles and thermodynamic ABL depth) and dynamic (horizontal wind speed and direction, mean vertical velocity, updraft and downdraft speed profiles, and dynamical ABL depth). Contextual information about cloud occurrence is also provided. The dataset is prepared on a uniform time-height grid of 1 h and 30 m resolution to facilitate its use as a benchmark for forthcoming numerical simulations and the fundamental study of atmospheric processes.

Accurate Dehydrogenation Enthalpies Dataset for Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers

This contribution presents a comprehensive extension of the QM9 dataset (originally at 133 K molecules) with the calculation of G4MP2 enthalpies for 9,841 molecules, featuring up to nine heavy atoms. We present QM9-LOHC, a (de)hydrogenation dataset of 10,373 reactions, including a minimum of 5.5% weight hydrogen storage capacity in line with the Department of Energy standards for Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC). By utilizing the accurate quantum chemical method G4MP2 we expand the QM9 database and explore new avenues for the exploration of hydrogen storage technologies (electrochemical LOHCs, alkali metal-LOHCs, and mixtures of LOHCs). The QM9-LOHC dataset, with its focus on reactions that vary only by hydrogen saturation levels, provides a needed data resource for advancing the design and optimization of both conventional and innovative LOHC systems, and high-fidelity data for molecular discovery.

PAH101: A GW+BSE Dataset of 101 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Molecular Crystals

Abstract The excited-state properties of molecular crystals are important for applications in organic electronic devices. TheGWapproximation and Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW+BSE) is the state-of-the-art method for calculating the excited-state properties of crystalline solids with periodic boundary conditions. We present the PAH101 dataset ofGW+BSE calculations for 101 molecular crystals of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with up to ~500 atoms in the unit cell. To the best of our knowledge, this is the firstGW+BSE dataset for molecular crystals. The data records include theGWquasiparticle band structure, the fundamental band gap, the static dielectric constant, the first singlet exciton energy (optical gap), the first triplet exciton energy, the dielectric function, and optical absorption spectra for light polarized along the three lattice vectors. The dataset can be used to (i) discover materials with desired electronic/optical properties, (ii) identify correlations between DFT andGW+BSE quantities, and (iii) train machine learned models to help in materials discovery efforts.

Datasets of Faults in Variable Air Volume Terminal Units in a Multi-Zone Commercial Building

Faults in HVAC systems can decrease system efficiency and equipment lifespan, leading to 5%–30% of energy consumption being wasted in commercial buildings. We identified two common faults in HVAC variable air volume systems: a stuck damper fault in the variable air volume terminal unit and a discharge airflow sensor fault. We conducted three sets of damper stuck tests and two sets of airflow sensor tests, each including a fault-free scenario and scenarios with varying levels of faults, over one day. The faults were implemented in Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s two-story Flexible Research Platform building to generate a high-quality, well-controlled dataset covering fault-induced and fault-free scenarios. The test building, fault test scenarios, and data validation are described here. The open-source dataset includes 1 min intervals of weather and building data on the presence and absence of building faults. This dataset can be used to analyze the effects of HVAC system faults on system operation and indoor building conditions, and to develop or evaluate a fault detection and diagnosis algorithm.
