Integrated source and channel encoded digital communication system design study

Various aspects of space shuttle communication systems were studied. The following major areas were investigated: burst error correction for shuttle command channels; performance optimization and design considerations for Costas receivers with and without bandpass limiting; experimental techniques for measuring low level spectral components of microwave signals; and potential modulation and coding techniques for the Ku-band return link. Results are presented.

Integrated source and channel encoded digital communication system design study

The results of several studies Space Shuttle communication system are summarized. These tasks can be divided into the following categories: (1) phase multiplexing for two- and three-channel data transmission, (2) effects of phase noise on the performance of coherent communication links, (3) analysis of command system performance, (4) error correcting code tradeoffs, (5) signal detection and angular search procedure for the shuttle Ku-band communication system, and (6) false lock performance of Costas loop receivers.

Evaluation of NASA speech encoder

Techniques developed by NASA for spaceflight instrumentation were used in the design of a quantizer for speech-decoding. Computer simulation of the actions of the quantizer was tested with synthesized and real speech signals. Results were evaluated by a phometician. Topics discussed include the relationship between the number of quantizer levels and the required sampling rate; reconstruction of signals; digital filtering; speech recording, sampling, and storage, and processing results.

Integrated source and channel encoded digital communication system design study

The analysis of the forward link signal structure for the shuttle orbiter Ku-band communication system was carried out, based on the assumptions of a 3.03 Mcps PN code. It is shown that acquisition requirements for the forward link can be met at the acquisition threshold C/N0 sub 0 value of about 60 dB-Hz, which corresponds to a bit error rate (BER) of about 0.001. It is also shown that the tracking threshold for the forward link is at about 57 dB-Hz. The analysis of the bent pipe concept for the orbiter was carried out, along with the comparative analysis of the empirical data. The complexity of the analytical approach warrants further investigation to reconcile the empirical and theoretical results. Techniques for incorporating a text and graphics capability into the forward link data stream are considered and a baseline configuration is described.

Integrated source and channel encoded digital communication system design study

The particular Ku-band carrier, PN despreading, and symbol synchronization strategies, which were selected for implementation in the Ku-band transponder aboard the orbiter, were assessed and evaluated from a systems performance viewpoint, verifying that system specifications were met. A study was performed of the design and implementation of tracking techniques which are suitable for incorporation into the Orbiter Ku-band communication system. Emphasis was placed on maximizing tracking accuracy and communication system flexibility while minimizing cost, weight, and system complexity of Orbiter and ground systems hardware. The payload communication study assessed the design and performance of the forward link and return link bent-pipe relay modes for attached and detached payloads. As part of this study, a design for a forward link bent-pipe was proposed which employs a residual carrier but which is tracked by the existing Costas loop.

A Simulation System for Validating the Analytical Prediction of Performance of the Convolutional Encoded and Symbol Interleaved TDRSS S-band Return Link Service in a Pulsed RFI Environment

A hardware integrated convolutional coding/symbol interleaving and integrated symbol deinterleaving/Viterbi decoding simulation system is described. Validation on the system of the performance of the TDRSS S-band return link with BPSK modulation, operating in a pulsed RFI environment is included. The system consists of three components, the Fast Linkabit Error Rate Tester (FLERT), the Transition Probability Generator (TPG), and a modified LV7017B which includes rate 1/3 capability as well as a periodic interleaver/deinterleaver. Operating and maintenance manuals for each of these units are included.

Test Sequences for Reed-Solomon Encoders

Theory of Reed-Solomon codes yields sequences of input test symbols. Two specific sequences worked out for codes of 8 bits per symbol with 223 information symbols and 32 parity check symbols per code words. Test patterns also used for decoders.

Investigation of digital encoding techniques for television transmission

Composite color television signals are sampled at four times the color subcarrier and transformed using intraframe two dimensional Walsh functions. It is shown that by properly sampling a composite color signal and employing a Walsh transform the YIQ time signals which sum to produce the composite color signal can be represented, in the transform domain, by three component signals in space. By suitably zonal quantizing the transform coefficients, the YIQ signals can be processed independently to achieve data compression and obtain the same results as component coding. Computer simulations of three bandwidth compressors operating at 1.09, 1.53 and 1.8 bits/ sample are presented. The above results can also be applied to the PAL color system.

A software simulation study of a (255,223) Reed-Solomon encoder-decoder

A set of software programs which simulates a (255,223) Reed-Solomon encoder/decoder pair is described. The transform decoder algorithm uses a modified Euclid algorithm, and closely follows the pipeline architecture proposed for the hardware decoder. Uncorrectable error patterns are detected by a simple test, and the inverse transform is computed by a finite field FFT. Numerical examples of the decoder operation are given for some test codewords, with and without errors. The use of the software package is briefly described.

Twos-complement data processing form improved encoded matrix-vector processors

A new method for handling bipolar data by twos-complement representation is detailed. This technique requires fewer bits, uses simpler optical processor devices (fewer channels), and provides a higher processing rate and throughput. It is directly extendable to more complex matrix operations because of its data flow property and requires only a modest increase in the complexity of the digital support system.

Real-time speech encoding based on Code-Excited Linear Prediction (CELP)

This paper reports on the work proceeding with regard to the development of a real-time voice codec for the terrestrial and satellite mobile radio environments. The codec is based on a complexity reduced version of code-excited linear prediction (CELP). The codebook search complexity was reduced to only 0.5 million floating point operations per second (MFLOPS) while maintaining excellent speech quality. Novel methods to quantize the residual and the long and short term model filters are presented.

SHAPES - Spatial, High-Accuracy, Position-Encoding Sensor for multi-point, 3-D position measurement of large flexible structures

An electro-optical position sensor for precise simultaneous measurement of the 3-D positions of multiple points on large space structures is described. The sensor data rate is sufficient for most control purposes. Range is determined by time-of-flight correlation of short laser pulses returned from retroreflector targets using a streak tube/CCD detector. Angular position is determined from target image locations on a second CCD. Experimental verification of dynamic ranging to multiple targets is discussed.
