Rigid-flex circuit boards are becoming moreprevalent as the limits are pushed on the size, mass, and geometryof electronic systems. A key aspect of designing a rigid-flexprinted circuit boards (PCB) system is an assessment of thedynamic properties of the PCB and predicting system perfor-mance under dynamic loading. Among current modeling method-ologies for rigid-flex PCB, a simplified modeling methodology thatadequately captures the system dynamics does not exist. This arti-cle presents a novel, computationally efficient approach formodeling rigid-flex PCB systems and the calibration of the mate-rial models via modal testing. The resulting simplified model isable to capture system frequencies, mode shapes, and representa-tive force-displacement behavior. The proposed methodology isused to model NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Pop-Up FlatFolding Explorer Robot (PUFFER) and assess the sensitivity of asystem model to input parameters.

Crystal plasticity finite element model (CPFEM) is a powerful numerical simulation in the integrated computational materials engineering toolboxes that relates microstructures to homogenized materials properties and establishes the structure–property linkages in computational materials science. However, to establish the predictive capability, one needs to calibrate the underlying constitutive model, verify the solution and validate the model prediction against experimental data. Bayesian optimization (BO) has stood out as a gradient-free efficient global optimization algorithm that is capable of calibrating constitutive models for CPFEM. Here in this paper, we apply a recently developed asynchronous parallel constrained BO algorithm to calibrate phenomenological constitutive models for stainless steel 304 L, Tantalum, and Cantor high-entropy alloy.
An overview is given of work conducted on contract for the Naval Sea Systems Command. The objective of this contract was to provide direction for the development of high modulus graphite reinforced metal matrix composites. These advanced materials can have a significant effect on the performance of a spacecraft before, during and after an evasive maneuver. The work conducted on this program was organized into seven technical tasks. Task 1 was development of a generic Navy spacecraft model. Finite element models of candidate structural designs were developed. In Task 2, the finite-element model(s) of the structure were used to conduct analytical assessments involving conventional materials, resin matrix composites and metal matrix composites (MMC). In Task 3 and 4, MMC material design, fabrication and evaluation was conducted. This consisted of generating material designs and developing a data base for a broad range of graphite reinforced MMC materials. All material was procured according to specifications which set material quality and material property standards. In Task 5, a set of evasive maneuvering requirements were derived and used in Task 6 to conduct analytical simulations. These analytical simulations used current SOA material properties and projected material properties to provide an indication of key payoffs for material development. In Task 7, a set of material development recommendations was generated.
