Radio emission signature of Saturn immersions in Jupiter's magnetic tail

During the interval from about May through August 1981, when Voyager 2 was inbound to Saturn, the Planetary Radio Astronomy instrument measured repeated, dramatic decreases in the intensity of the Saturn Kilometric Radiation (SKR). The emission dropouts averaged two orders of magnitude below mean energy levels and varied from about 1 to 10 Saturn rotations in duration. Comparison with pre-Saturn encounter Voyager 1 observations (June to November, 1980) shows that the SKR dropouts were unique to the Voyager 2 observing interval, consistent with the closer proximity of Saturn to Jupiter's distant magnetotail in 1981. Further, the dropouts occurred on the average at times when Voyager 2 is known to have been within or near Jupiter's magnetic tail.

Total immersion crystal growth

Crystals of wide band gap materials are produced by positioning a holder receiving a seed crystal at the interface between a body of molten wide band gap material and an overlying layer of temperature-controlled, encapsulating liquid. The temperature of the layer decreases from the crystallization temperature of the crystal at the interface with the melt to a substantially lower temperature at which formation of crystal defects does not occur, suitably a temperature of 200 to 600 C. After initiation of crystal growth, the leading edge of the crystal is pulled through the layer until the leading edge of the crystal enters the ambient gas headspace which may also be temperature controlled. The length of the column of liquid encapsulant may exceed the length of the crystal such that the leading edge and trailing edge of the crystal are both simultaneously with the column of the crystal. The crystal can be pulled vertically by means of a pulling-rotation assembly or horizontally by means of a low-angle withdrawal mechanism.

Rough-water Impact-load Investigation of a Chine-immersed V-bottom Model Having a Dead-rise Angle of 10 Degrees

A hydrodynamic rough-water impact-loads investigation of a fixed-trim V-bottom float with a beam-loading coefficient of 5.78 and dead-rise angle of 10 degrees was made at the Langley impact basin. The size of the waves varied from approximately 10 to 60 feet in length and 1 to 2 feet in height. Time histories were obtained showing the position of the model relative to the wave throughout the impact and typical examples are presented. The load coefficient was found to vary primarily with the slope of the impacting wave.

Coordinated control of a dual-arm dexterous robot using full immersion telepresence and virtual reality

Telepresence is an approach to teleoperation that provides egocentric, intuitive interactions between an operator and a remote environment. This approach takes advantage of the natural cognitive and sensory motor skills of an on-board crew and effectively transfers them to a slave robot. A dual alarm dexterous robot operating under telepresence control has been developed and initial evaluations of the system performing candidate EVA, IVA and planetary geological tasks were conducted. The results of our evaluation showed that telepresence control is very effective in transferring the operator's skills to the slave robot. However, the results also showed that, due to the kinematic and dynamics inconsistencies between the operator and the robot, a limited amount of intelligent automation is also required to carry out some to the tasks. Therefore, several enhancements have been made to the original system to increase the automated capabilities of the control system without losing the benefits of telepresence.
