Ontologies: The Gateway to Knowledge-Enabled Information Services at Los Alamos National Laboratory

At LANL, we use ontologies to capture and maintain essential organizational knowledge and support tools and frameworks for information discovery. Ontologies capture knowledge, creating meaningful structures for finding and interpreting information. Information in a human context that provides meaning and data that is organized and communicated. This report provides information about LANL's ontology efforts and challenges.

Progress on Light-Element Standard Cross Sections at Los Alamos [Slides]

Presenters identified the following statuses of the light-element standards: Extension of N-N scattering analysis to 200 MeV will likely come in time for ENDF/B VIII.1 and new data are to be added even in the energy range up to 100 MeV; for n- 3 He, a more recent 4 He R-matrix analysis from which updated n+ 3 He cross sections could be obtained for ENDF/B VIII.1; for n- 6 Li, more work is required to get a reasonable fit to all data up to E n = 8 MeV. Of particular concern are the t+ 4 He scattering data at E t > 14 MeV. For n- 10 B, new work on the 11 B system has not yet been started and there is much new data to add for n+ 10 B reactions, and maybe also for &#945 + 7 Li reactions. The proliferation of excited-state channels will limit the upper neutron energy of the analysis to a few MeV. For n- 12 C, new elastic and inelastic scattering data from Vanhoy support the results of the present analysis. More work is needed to extend the fit successfully above 6.5 MeV.

Los Alamos National Laboratory High Performance Computing Overview [Slides]

We need such big computers because without testing, we don't understand the health of the AGING stockpile. Our big computers store a wealth of test data. We model weapons as they were tested and see if we can match the results to validate models, and we then use validated models along with dismantlement information on aging to certify the stockpile. Sometimes the results of tests can’t be explained well, so even that part requires massive computations, but applying the model to future use is an astonishing amount of computing.

Decarbonization Roadmap: Los Alamos National Laboratory [Slides]

The Net-Zero (NZ) Decarbonization Roadmap builds upon LANL’s storied & innovative energy-related history. It also builds upon existing LANL planning frameworks. The Net Zero Roadmap Framework defines a ‘whole of LANL’ approach for meeting overarching, builds upon existing planning efforts, identifies and prioritizes critical path actions LANL can adapt to meet net & real-time clean electricity targets, and identifies key technological challenges in achieving targets.
