Accelerating the Lagrangian Particle Tracking in Hydrologic Modeling to Continental-Scale

Unprecedented climate change and anthropogenic activities have induced increasing ecohydrological problems, which have motivated the development of large-scale modeling for solutions. Water age/quality is as important as water quantity for understanding the water cycle. However, current scientific progress in tracking water parcels at large-scale with high spatiotemporal resolutions is far behind that in water balance/quantity owing to the lack of powerful tools. EcoSLIM is a particle tracking model that works with the hydrologic model ParFlow-CLM, which couples surface-subsurface hydrology with land surface processes. Here, we demonstrate a parallel framework to accelerate EcoSLIM to continental-scale on a distributed, multi-GPU platform with CUDA-Aware MPI. In tests from catchment-, to regional-, and then to continental-scale using 25-million to 1.6-billion particles, EcoSLIM shows significant speedup and excellent parallel performance. The parallel framework is portable to atmospheric and oceanic particle tracking models, where parallelization is inadequate and a standard parallel framework is absent. Parallelized EcoSLIM is a promising tool to accelerate our understanding of the terrestrial water cycle and the upscaling of subsurface hydrology to Earth system models.

When action is not least for systems with action-dependent Lagrangians

The dynamics of some non-conservative and dissipative systems can be derived by calculating the first variation of an action-dependent action according to the variational principle of Herglotz. This is directly analogous to the variational principle of Hamilton commonly used to derive the dynamics of conservative systems. In a similar fashion, just as the second variation of a conservative system’s action can be used to infer whether that system’s possible trajectories are dynamically stable, so too can the second variation of the action-dependent action be used to infer whether the possible trajectories of non-conservative and dissipative systems are dynamically stable. In this paper, I show, generalizing earlier analyses of the second variation of the action for conservative systems, how to calculate the second variation of the action-dependent action and how to apply it to two physically important systems: a time-independent harmonic oscillator and a time-dependent harmonic oscillator.

Lagrangian particle simulation of hydrogen pellets and SPI into runaway electron beam in ITER

Numerical studies of the ablation of pellets and shattered pellet injection (SPI) fragments into a runaway electron beam in ITER have been performed using a time-dependent pellet ablation code [Samulyak et al., Nucl. Fusion, 61(4), 046007 (2021)]. The code resolves detailed ablation physics near pellet fragments and large-scale expansion of ablated clouds. The study of a single-fragment ablation quantifies the influence of various factors, in particular, the impact ionization by runaway electrons and cross-field transport models, on the dynamics of ablated plasma and its penetration into the runaway beam. Simulations of SPI performed using different numbers of pellet fragments study the formation and evolution of the ablation clouds and their large-scale dynamics in ITER. In conclusion, the penetration depth of the ablation clouds is found to be of the order of 50 cm.

Basis light-front quantization for a chiral nucleon-pion Lagrangian

We present the first application of the basis light-front quantization method to a simple chiral model of the nucleon-pion system as a relativistic bound state for the physical proton. In this work, the light-front mass-squared matrix of the nucleon-pion system is obtained within a truncated basis. The mass and the corresponding light-front wave function (LFWF) of the proton are computed by numerical diagonalization of the resulting mass-squared matrix. With the boost-invariant LFWF, we calculate the probability density distribution of the pion's longitudinal momentum fraction and the Dirac form factor of the proton.

A Lagrangian Study of the Transition from Shallow to Deep Convection Using ASR Observations and Les Simulations (Final Report)

With the support from this grant, we have made the following accomplishments. We have found that a formula for fractional entrainment rate, a key aspect for parameterization moist convection, that works for both shallow and deep convection, which provide a promising direction for unified treatment of entrainment for both shallow and deep convection. We also examined the formulation of vertical velocity and showed that the effect of non-hydrostatic pressure and entrainment on vertical velocity are not constants, as assumed in past studies, but can be computed using a simple model for the cloudy updrafts. These results also apply to both deep and shallow convection, which opens the door for a more physically based parameterization of the updraft vertical velocity. We have also conducted extensive analysis of the RACORO aircraft data and have published the results in Wei et al. (2020). We have made extensive effort scrutinizing the data in detail and examining the various hypotheses with the aid of the LES simulations. This was the first application of the modified Paluch diagram on modern aircraft data and the first comprehensive analysis of mixing in clouds using real data (instead of only LES output) in a very long time. These analyses enhanced the science return of the ASR aircraft measurements. This grant also supported a study of the collisions among cold pools and an effort to build parameterizations of moist convection using tools developed in control theory.
