Extreme Fermi Surface Smearing in a Maximally Disordered Concentrated Solid Solution

We show that the Fermi surface can survive the presence of extreme compositional disorder in the equiatomic alloy Ni 0.25 Fe 0.25 Co 0.25 Cr 0.25 . Our high-resolution Compton scattering experiments reveal a Fermi surface which is smeared across a significant fraction of the Brillouin zone (up to 40% of $\frac{2π}{a}$). The extent of this smearing and its variation on and between different sheets of the Fermi surface have been determined, and estimates of the electron mean free path and residual resistivity have been made by connecting this smearing with the coherence length of the quasiparticle states.

Positive Energy Functional for Massless Scalars in Rotating Black Hole Backgrounds of Maximal Ungauged Supergravity

Here, we outline a proof of the stability of a massless neutral scalar field ψ in the background of a wide class of four dimensional asymptotically flat rotating and “electrically charged” solutions of supergravity, and the low energy limit of string theory, known as STU metrics. Despite their complexity, we find it possible to circumvent the difficulties presented by the existence of ergo regions and the related phenomenon of superradiance in the original metrics by following a strategy due to Whiting, and passing to an auxiliary metric admitting an everywhere lightlike Killing field and constructing a scalar field ψ (related to a possible unstable mode ψ by a nonlocal transformation) which satisfies the massless wave equation with respect to the auxiliary metric. By contrast with the case for ψ, the associated energy density of ψ is not only conserved but is also non-negative.

Automated map sharpening by maximization of detail and connectivity

An algorithm for automatic map sharpening is presented that is based on optimization of the detail and connectivity of the sharpened map. The detail in the map is reflected in the surface area of an iso-contour surface that contains a fixed fraction of the volume of the map, where a map with high level of detail has a high surface area. The connectivity of the sharpened map is reflected in the number of connected regions defined by the same iso-contour surfaces, where a map with high connectivity has a small number of connected regions. By combining these two measures in a metric termed the `adjusted surface area', map quality can be evaluated in an automated fashion. This metric was used to choose optimal map-sharpening parameters without reference to a model or other interpretations of the map. Map sharpening by optimization of the adjusted surface area can be carried out for a map as a whole or it can be carried out locally, yielding a locally sharpened map. To evaluate the performance of various approaches, a simple metric based on map–model correlation that can reproduce visual choices of optimally sharpened maps was used. The map–model correlation is calculated using a model with B factors (atomic displacement factors; ADPs) set to zero. This model-based metric was used to evaluate map sharpening and to evaluate map-sharpening approaches, and it was found that optimization of the adjusted surface area can be an effective tool for map sharpening.

Operating-Envelopes-Aware Decentralized Welfare Maximization for Energy Communities

We propose an operating-envelope-aware, prosumer-centric, and efficient energy community that aggregates individual and shared community distributed energy resources and transacts with a regulated distribution system operator (DSO) under a generalized net energy metering tariff design. To ensure safe network operation, the DSO imposes dynamic export and import limits, known as dynamic operating envelopes, on end-users' revenue meters. Given the operating envelopes, we propose an incentive-aligned community pricing mechanism under which the decentralized optimization of community members' benefit implies the optimization of overall community welfare. The proposed pricing mechanism satisfies the cost-causation principle and ensures the stability of the energy community in a coalition game setting. Numerical examples provide insights into the characteristics of the proposed pricing mechanism and quantitative measures of its performance.

Maximizing the Performance of a 3D Printed Heat Sink by Accounting for Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity During Filament Deposition

Newly developed high thermal conductivity polymer composite 3D printing filaments are used to characterize the thermal properties as a function of print orientation. The thermal conductivity of a printed part is anisotropic and varies by 2-6 times depending on the print direction - demonstrating higher conductivity in the deposition direction (in-plane) than in the two directions perpendicular to the deposition direction (cross-plane and through-plane). Therefore, deposition path planning greatly affects the overall heat dissipation rate and the performance of the heat sink. Traditionally, 3D printing slicers generate deposition paths based solely on geometric constraints. This work investigates a new approach of deposition path planning assisted by computational predictions of the heat sink thermal performance. The proposed approach uses a thermal simulation of a 3D-printed part, accounting for the anisotropic thermal properties, and the orientation of the local material properties are assigned based on the deposition path in multiple print orientations. The performances predicted via the simulations are compared, and the optimal deposition path is determined. For the highest thermal conductivity 3D printing filament (~ 12 W/m- K in-plane), a heat sink printed with the print direction parallel to the fins z-axis had ~20% improved performance in comparison to a heat sink with print direction perpendicular to the fins z-axis. Moreover, a plastic 3D printed heat sink was able to perform within 7% of an extruded Aluminum heat sink with similar geometry under natural convection. The computational predictions show the same trend as experimental measurements using 3D printed heat sinks.

Maximizing Yield with Improved Single-Axis Backtracking on Cross-Axis Slopes

Many tracking PV systems avoid row-to-row shading by backtracking in morning and afternoon. Because the common single-axis backtracking implementation assumes the array is in a horizontal plane, it does not fully prevent row-to-row shading in arrays installed on cross-axis slopes, e.g. an east-west slope for a tracker with north-south axis alignment. This paper presents the simulated effect of reduced self-shading on annual production with two modified backtracking strategies. Depending on the array geometry and the steepness of the cross-axis grade, using a modified backtracking strategy improved annual yield by 3-10%.

Biosensor-driven strain engineering reveals key cellular processes for maximizing isoprenol production in Pseudomonas putida

Synthetic biology generates vast combinatorial designs, yet high-throughput analytical methods to screen them are poorly matched to interrogate this search space. We address this challenge by developing a biosensor-driven, growth-coupled selection strategy in Pseudomonas putida for isoprenol, a potential aviation fuel precursor. We found and characterized a noncanonical signaling pathway, revealing a functional and physical complex between a hybrid histidine kinase and an alcohol dehydrogenase, whose activity is tuned by heterodimerization. Leveraging this biosensor in a pooled CRISPRi library selection, we identified key host limitations. Iterative combinatorial strain engineering derived from these hits yielded a 36-fold titer increase to ~900 milligrams per liter. Integrated omics analysis revealed that metabolic rewiring toward amino acid catabolism was crucial for this improvement. This observation was found to be beneficial by technoeconomic analysis. Our modular workflow provides a powerful strategy for optimizing complex heterologous pathways and uncovering emergent host biology.
