Discovering Electroweak Interacting Dark Matter at Muon Colliders Using Soft Tracks

Minimal dark matter models feature one neutral particle that serves as a thermal relic dark matter candidate, as well as quasidegenerate charged states with TeV masses. When the charged states are produced at colliders, they can decay into dark matter and a low-momentum (soft) charged particle, which is challenging to reconstruct at hadron colliders. We demonstrate that a 3 TeV muon collider is capable of detecting these soft tracks, enabling the discovery of thermal Higgsinos and similar dark matter candidates that constitute highly motivated scenarios for future collider searches.

Hadronic vacuum polarization for the muon g - 2 from lattice QCD: Complete short and intermediate windows

We present complete results for the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment a μ in the short- and intermediate-distance window regions, which account for roughly 10% and 35% of the total HVP contribution to a μ , respectively. In particular, we perform lattice-QCD calculations for the isospin-symmetric connected and disconnected contributions, as well as corrections due to strong-isospin breaking. For the short-distance window observables, we investigate the so-called log-enhancement effects as well as the significant oscillations associated with staggered quarks in this region. For the dominant, isospin-symmetric light-quark-connected contribution, we obtain a μ l l , SD ( conn ) = 48.139 ( 11 ) stat ( 91 ) syst [ 92 ] total × 10 - 10 and a μ l l , W ( conn ) = 206.90 ( 14 ) stat ( 61 ) syst [ 63 ] total × 10 - 10 . We use Bayesian model averaging to fully estimate the covariance matrix between the individual contributions. Our determinations of the complete window contributions are a μ SD = 69.05 ( 1 ) stat ( 21 ) syst [ 21 ] total × 10 - 10 and a μ W = 236.45 ( 17 ) stat ( 83 ) syst [ 85 ] total × 10 - 10 . This work is part of our ongoing effort to compute all contributions to HVP with an overall uncertainty at the few-permille level.

Charged Lepton Flavor Violating Experiments with Muons

We report on the status of charged lepton flavor violating (CLFV) experiments with muons. We focus on the three "golden channels": $\mu^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} \gamma$, $\mu^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} e^{-} e^{+}$ and $\mu^{-} N \rightarrow e^{-} N$. The collection of upcoming experiments aim for sensitivity improvements up to $10^{4}$ with respect to previous searches. The MEG II experiment, searching for $\mu^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} \gamma$, is currently in its 4th year of physics data-taking with a published result from its first year of data. The Mu3e experiment is an upcoming experiment searching for $\mu^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} e^{-} e^{+}$ with plans of physics data-taking as soon as 2025. The Mu2e and COMET experiments are upcoming searches for $\mu^{-} N \rightarrow e^{-} N$ with the goal of physics data-taking starting in 2027 and 2026 respectively. This proceeding summarizes the signal signature, expected background, resolutions, and timelines for the mentioned searches.

Search for New Physics through a Long-Lived Di-Muon Resonance in the NuMI Beam with the ICARUS Detector

Many of the unexplained phenomena in particle physics and cosmology today, such as the microphysical nature of dark matter, the strong CP problem, and the origin of the neutrino masses, can be resolved by the existence of a light (~GeV), weakly-coupled hidden sector of new physics. Such hidden sectors often predict the existence of “long-lived” particles (LLPs) that travel a far distance from production before decaying into Standard Model particles. Neutrino oscillation experiments, which combine intense particle beams with precise imaging detectors, are well equipped to probe LLP models with new sensitivity. This thesis details a search for a long-lived particle decaying to two muons with the ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detector in the Short-Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab. The calibration of the ICARUS time projection chamber (TPC) which enables the search is also presented. Notably, the calibration measures an angular dependence in electron-ion recombination in argon, a novel effect in the detector physics of LArTPCs. The search is performed using data taken with the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam, with an exposure of 2.41e20 protons on target. No significant excess over background is observed, and we set world-leading limits on two new physics models that predict this process: the Higgs portal scalar and a heavy axion model. We also present the sensitivity in a model-independent way applicable to any new physics model predicting the process K → π + S(→μμ), for a long-lived particle S.

Yields of gamma rays emitted following capture of negative muons by Si28 and Mg24.

Measurement of the yields of specific final states excited in the capture of negative muons by Mg24 and Si28. The yields are compared with the cross sections for excitation of the analog states by 180 deg electron scattering and with the relative populations of levels produced by the decay of the giant-dipole-resonance states.

Gamma-neutrino angular correlations in muon capture.

Using a high-resolution Ge(Li) spectrometer, it proved possible to observe several Doppler-broadened gamma-ray transitions in Al-28 excited by muon capture in Si-28. Several of these transitions are shown to be suitable for analysis in terms of angular correlations between the neutrino and a deexcitation nuclear gamma-ray. The observed transitions are interpreted in terms of gamma-neutrino correlation coefficients which are functions of the weak-interaction coupling constants.
