A sonic satellite power system microwave power transmission simulation

A simulator is described which generates and transmits a beam of audible sound energy mathematically similar to the SPS power beam. The simulator provides a laboratory means for analysis of ground based closed loop SPS phase control and of ionospheric effects on the SPS microwave power beam.

A new SPS antenna design to reduce grating lobes

In the Solar Power Satellite system, the antenna's misalignment will produce well defined grating lobes. These gratings lobe peaks occur every 440 km and are potentially hazardous to the environment. One way to suppress these peaks is to phase control every power module. The cost due to the increase in receiving electronics and processors, however, could prove to be prohibitive. A new design of the antenna involving the addition of two broad gaps, one along the x axis and another along the y axis is proposed. The gap distance is exactly one half of the distance between the center of two neighboring subarrays. Calculation of far field radiation patterns shows that the design reduces grating lobe peaks without sacrificing power in the main lobe.

Microwave system performance summary

The design of the microwave system for the solar power satellite is described. Design modifications recommended include changes in phase control to the power module level, a reduction in allowable amplitude jitter, the use of metal matrix waveguides, and sequences for startup/shutdown procedures. Investigations into reshaping the beam pattern to improve overall rectenna collection efficiency and improve sidelobe control are surveyed.

Solar power satellite microwave power transmission and reception system

The microwave power transmission and reception system of the Satellite Power System (SPS) has been intensively reviewed and assessed in a three-year concept development and evaluation program. This paper will review some concepts of SPS with particular emphasis on the design of the microwave power transmission and reception system. Technology requirements and proposals for meeting them will be discussed for various parts of the microwave system and to some degree for critical components such as power amplifiers. Specific subjects to be discussed are SPS concepts, antenna design, phase control, rectenna, and technology.

Thermoelectric integrated membrane evaporation water recovery technology

The recently developed Thermoelectric Integrated Membrane Evaporation Subsystem (TIMES) offers a highly competitive approach to water recovery from waste fluids for future on-orbit stations such as the Space Operations Center. Low power, compactness and gravity insensitive operation are featured in this vacuum distillation subsystem that combines a hollow fiber membrane evaporator with a thermoelectric heat pump. The hollow fiber elements provide positive liquid/gas phase control with no moving parts other than pumps and an accumulator, thus solving problems inherent in other reclamation subsystem designs. In an extensive test program, over 850 hours of operation were accumulated during which time high quality product water was recovered from both urine and wash water at an average steady state production rate of 2.2 pounds per hour.

Analysis and acoustooptical measurements of bulk and surface acoustic wave fields

The development of multielement ultrasonic transducers having full field amplitude and phase control is discussed. In addition, the measurement of the surface particle displacement caused by an idealized impulse load on the surface, the three dimensional mapping of acoustic fields using optical scanning techniques, and the measurement of two dimensional stress distributions using embedded optical fiber sensors are addressed.

Application of beam power technology to a space station

The feasibility and performance parameters for beam microwave power supplies from a space station to nearby orbiting satellites are examined. A 5.8 GHz transmission frequency is found suitable for beaming 1-10 kW over a distance of 1-10 km. The antenna could have a 15 m diameter, a 64 kW output, provide uniform illumination, and have a retrodirective phase control system. A LEO to ground demonstration project is described, involving power levels of 0.0025 mW/sq cm and yielding 202 W at a 100 x 100 m rectenna.

Development of a preprototype times wastewater recovery subsystem

A three-man wastewater recovery preprototype subsystem using a hollow fiber membrane evaporator with a thermoelectric heat pump to provide efficient potable water recovery from wastewater on extended duration space flights was designed, fabricated, and tested at one-gravity. Low power, compactness and gravity insensitive operation are featured in this vacuum distillation subsystem. The tubular hollow fiber elements provide positive liquid/gas phase control with no moving parts, and provide structural integrity, improving on previous flat sheet membrane designs. A thermoelectric heat pump provides latent energy recovery. Application and integration of these key elements solved problems inherent in all previous reclamation subsystem designs.

Shaped reflector beam waveguide and high gain antenna systems

In this paper the problem of synthesizing dual reflector antennas for both amplitude and phase control of the final aperture distribution is discussed. An approximate procedure for the offset synthesis problem is presented and applications of the procedure to the shaping of beam waveguides and reflectors for high-gain antenna systems are illustrated.

Designing a configuration control mechanism for a flight software validation facility

Embedded computer systems and supporting operating systems have recently enabled the automation of many time-critical flight functions. This automation requires the integration of computer hardware and software, aircraft hardware, and the flight application. To properly integrate and control these critical functions requires a real-time environment that is provided by the onboard flight computer, a real-time operating system, and a real-time flight application that supplies the input commands to the aircraft and responds to the resulting actions. The increased complexity of developing and testing such real-time applications can best be supported by a separate test facility that provides the processing visibility and control which is virtually impossible in the actual real-time operating environment. Such a flight software validation facility has been developed at the NASA Langley Research Center to support applications using the Shuttle real-time language HAL/S. The development and control of this facility are described. Some of the management techniques used were project schedules, status monitoring, code walk-throughs, configuration control, phased releases, validation suites, and modern programming techniques.

Detection of radio-frequency modulated optical signals by two and three terminal microwave devices

An interdigitated photoconductor (two terminal device) on GaAlAs/GaAs heterostructure was fabricated and tested by an electro-optical sampling technique. Further, the photoresponse of GaAlAs/GaAs HEMT (three terminal device) was obtained by illuminating the device with an optical signal modulated up to 8 GHz. Gain-bandwidth product, response time, and noise properties of photoconductor and HEMT devices were obtained. Monolithic integration of these photodetectors with GaAs microwave devices for optically controlled phased array antenna applications is discussed.

A Fourier analysis for a fast simulation algorithm

This paper presents a derivation of compact expressions for the Fourier series analysis of the steady-state solution of a typical switching converter. The modeling procedure for the simulation and the steady-state solution is described, and some desirable traits for its matrix exponential subroutine are discussed. The Fourier analysis algorithm was tested on a phase-controlled parallel-loaded resonant converter, providing an experimental confirmation.
