Using SAW Resonators in RF Oscillators

Surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) resonators used as frequency-determining elements in radio-frequency oscillators circuits. Oscillators are frequencymodulated, phase-modulated, or pulse-modulated. SAW resonators are especially applicable to low-power subminiature applications, such as biotelemetry and wind-tunnel instrumentation, where they advantageously replace crystals. Resonators are smaller than crystals and very thin--advantage where small package size is important.

The nova-like variable KQ Mon and the nature of the UX Ursa Majoris stars

The KQ Mon is a UX UMa type nova-like variable discovered by Howard Bond. Optical spectra taken by Bond in 1978 reveal very shallow Balmer absorption lines and He I absorption. Bond also did UBV and high speed photometry in 1978 and early 1981. There has been no evidence of orbital variations but the appearance of the optical spectrum and the presence of low amplitude flickering suggested a strong similarity to CD-42-14462 (=V3885 Sgr) and other members of the UX UMa class. Low dispersion observations of KQ Mon were made with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite. Six spectra taken with the shot wavelength prime camera are dominated by strong broad absorption lines due to N V, O I, Si III, Si IV, C IV, He II, N IV, and Al III. There is little evidence of orbital phase modulation over the time baseline of the observations. Unlike UV observations of other UX UMa type objects, KQ Mon exhibits no emission lines or P Cygni type profiles and the velocity displacements appear to be smaller, suggesting the absence of a hot, high velocity wind characterizing other UX UMa stars. The relationship of KQ Mon to other UX UMa disk stars is discussed and a model is suggested to explain their observed properties and the lack of major outbursts.

Two-way satellite time transfer using low power CW tones

In the search for an economical means of precise time transfer, the NRC Time Laboratory decided to adapt the techniques used by radio astronomers in an experiment to compare the phases of the local oscillators at widely separated VLBI stations. The objective is to design a system which would use commercial satellites, and which would be of reasonable cost for the ground stations and for operations. Two satellite ground stations were installed at NRC about 100 m from the Time Laboratory. For the preliminary experiment, a channel on the Anik Al 6/4 GHz satellite was made available by TELESAT Canada. Two tones were transmitted + or - MHz from the suppressed carrier. The difference frequency of 32 MHz was recorded using narrow band receivers. A low level 1 MHz phase modulation was added to identify the 32 MHz cycle, giving 1 microsec ambiguity in the time transfer. With less than 1/4 W in each tone, the EIRP is 43 dB below that of a normal TV Earth station, and no frequency dispersion is required. The measurements taken each second for the 32 MHz have an rms scatter of 1 ns.

Ultraviolet studies of nova-like variables with the IUE

KQ Mon is a new UX UMa-type nova-like variable. Optical spectra taken in 1978 reveal very shallow Balmer absorption lines and He I (wavelength 4471) absorption. There was no evidence of orbital variations but the appearance of the optical spectrum and the presence of low amplitude flickering suggested a strong similarity to CD-42 degrees 14462 (=V3885 Sgr) and other members of the UX UMa class. KQ Mon was observed at low dispersion with the IUE satellite. Six spectra taken with the short wavelength prime (SWP) camera are dominated by strong broad absorption lines due to N V, O I, Si III, Si IV, C IV, He II, N IV, and A1 III. There is little evidence of orbital phase modulation over the time baseline of the observations. Unlike UV observations of other UX UMa-type objects, KQ Mon exhibits no emission lines or P Cygni-type profiles and the velocity displacements appear to be smaller, suggesting the absence of a hot, high velocity wind characterizing other UX UMa stars. The relationship of KQ Mon to other UX UMa disk stars is discussed and a model is suggested to explain their observed properties and the lack of major outbursts.

Correlation spectrometer having high resolution and multiplexing capability

A correlation spectrometer permanently incorporates a reference cell and an electro-optical phase modulator (EOPM) in the light path between a sample cell and a detector. The effect of the EOPM is such that its frequency modulates all of the monochromatic component of the incoherent radiation passing through it. The EOPM is adjusted so that when it is ON all of the energy in the monochromatic components is thrown into sidebands differing from the original frequencies by integral multiples of the modulation frequency with the total amount of energy absorbed from the original radiation remaining constant. When there is no coincidence between the constituents in the two cells, the detector's output is the same when the EOPM is ON and when it is OFF. However, when there is coincidence the detector's output changes when the EOPM is switched between its two states. The change in the detector's output is related to the quantity of the constituents in the sample cell.

Passive remote sensing of stratospheric and mesospheric winds

A passive infrared sensor for remote sounding of the wind field in the stratosphere and mesosphere from near earth orbital spacecraft is described. The sensor utilizes gas correlation spectroscopy and electrooptic phase-modulation techniques to measure winds in the 20-120 km altitude range, temperature, and atmospheric species concentrations. The operation of the sensor is examined. The sensitivity of the sensor is small Doppler shifts in an observed spectrum and the performance of the instrument were evaluated using laboratory simulation and numerical modeling. The data reveal that the sensor's wind measurements should have an accuracy better than 5 m/s and a spatial resolution of 5 km vertical by 150 km horizontal.

Four quadrant control circuit for a brushless three-phase dc motor

A control circuit is provided for a brushless three-phase dc motor which affords four quadrant control from a single command. The control circuit probes acceleration of the motor in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions and braking and generation in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. In addition to turning on individual transistors of the transistor pairs connected to the phase windings of the motor for 120 deg periods while the other transistor of that pair is off, the control circuit also provides, in a future mode of operation, turning the two transistors of each pair on and off alternately at a phase modulation frequency during such a 120 deg period. A feedback signal is derived which is proportional to the motor current and which has a polarity consistent with the command signal, such that negative feedback results.

Phased array antenna for space shuttle orbiter

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is developing a distributed phased array antenna at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center as a possible upgrade for the Space Shuttle Orbiter S-band phase modulation communications system. The antenna consists of an eight-element transmit section, eight-element receive section, and a single L-band receive element. The antenna design is constrained by the existing Orbiter system and space environment. The solution to the interface design problems led to an antenna system which provides improved link margins and yet supports previous operational configurations. This paper describes the system development, antenna hardware, and the interface consideration which led to the final design.

Trellis-coded CPM for satellite-based mobile communications

Digital transmission for satellite-based land mobile communications is discussed. To satisfy the power and bandwidth limitations imposed on such systems, a combination of trellis coding and continuous-phase modulated signals are considered. Some schemes based on this idea are presented, and their performance is analyzed by computer simulation. The results obtained show that a scheme based on directional detection and Viterbi decoding appears promising for practical applications.

Single-tone and two-tone AM-FM spectral calculations for tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy

A generalized theory for optical heterodyne spectroscopy with phase modulated laser radiation is used which allows the calculation of signal line shapes for frequency modulation spectroscopy of Lorentzian gas absorption lines. In particular, synthetic spectral line shapes for both single-tone and two-tone modulation of lead-salt diode lasers are presented in which the contributions from both amplitude and frequency modulations are included.

Integrated optics implementation of a fiber optic rotation sensor - Analysis and development

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is developing a fiber optic rotation sensor (FORS) for use on the Mariner Mark II series of planetary explorer craft and in other space applications. FORS is a closed-loop phase-nulling device and embodies a number of interesting innovations. Chief among these are the incorporation of the device's couplers, phase modulators, and polarizer on a single lithium niobate (LinbO3) integrate optics chip and a novel means of reading out angular position and rotation rate based on optical beat detection. Various aspects of the FORS design and operation are described and discussed. Particular attention is paid to analyzing errors attributable to polarizer imperfection and the so-called residual Michelson effect.

HF sideband generation in the ionosphere

The temporal development of sidebands excited near sunrise by two strong HF waves separated by a few hertz is presented. Sidebands are not observed before sunrise when the ionospheric critical frequency is less than the heater frequency. As the ionospheric density increases following sunrise and overdense conditions are established, strong sidebands emerge. Even though these results favor a mechanism which phase modulates the reflected HF wave over one which first downconverts the HF power to ULF before exciting sidebands, it is possible that either mechanism could at times contribute to sideband production.

Low temperature optical testing of CFRP telescope panels

Since 1984, low temperature optical tests were made of very lightweight mirror panels for use in balloon and space infrared and submillimeter telescopes. In order to accomplish this testing, an ambient pressure 0.5 meter test chamber operating from 20 to -80 C, developed techniques for measuring non-optical quality mirrors with phase modulation 10.6 micron interferometry, and created the interferogram reduction program. During the course of the program, nineteen mirrors from four manufactures were tested: carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) aluminum honeycomb sandwich panel mirrors, a CFRP sandwich panel with an added glass facesheet, and carbon fiber reinforced glass panels. The results of the panel development and test program are summarized.
