CFD modeling of high-flux plate-and-frame membrane modules for industrial carbon capture

In this work, we explore the use of CO2-selective flat sheet membranes for capturing CO2 from point sources. We employ Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to design high-flux plate-and-frame membrane modules to achieve uniform flow distribution among membrane elements, minimize dead-end zones, and ease the common concentration polarization issue for gas separation membranes. The goal is to drive membrane technology improvements by providing better module designs for given membrane properties and operating conditions.

Thermal-hydraulic Performance of Emerging Low GWP Refrigerant Mixture under Flow Boiling in Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers

The hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants used in the current refrigeration systems are facing a phase-down due to their higher greenhouse effect resulting in global warming, and thus HVAC&R industry has undergone a transition to low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants. Refrigerant mixtures are attractive alternatives since their composition can be tailored to comply with environmental regulations while preserving favorable thermophysical properties. However, the new low-GWP zeotropic mixture refrigerants have two or more components with different saturation temperatures at the same pressure level, known as temperature glide, which can cause the degradation of the overall heat transfer performance. The brazed plate heat exchangers (BPHX) provide excellent heat transfer performance due to a compact design and are used in several air-conditioning and refrigeration applications. In this study, flow boiling heat transfer and the associated pressure drop of the refrigerant mixture in a vertical BPHX were experimentally investigated. The single-phase water-to-water experiments were conducted in the tested heat exchanger with a counter-flow configuration. The flow boiling experiments charged with R-134a and R-454C were then performed in a pumped refrigerant loop to evaluate its thermal-hydraulic performance. Furthermore, parametric studies of various heat fluxes, mass fluxes, vapor qualities, and saturation temperatures were also conducted.

Neutronics analysis of Full Size Plate–1 Experiment using MC21

Qualification and testing of Low Enriched Uranium fuel is desired so that it can be used in research reactors instead of High Enriched Uranium. The Full Size Plate - 1 (FSP-1) experiment involves irradiating a low enriched metallic fuel in the Advanced Test Reactor to assist in this general qualification. Prior to irradiation, an in-depth neutronics analysis is needed to ensure the safety requirements of the Advanced Test Reactor are met. To accomplish this, the MC21 software was used to analyze the FSP-1 experiment, which will allow a test run to be performed with this new fuel in the Advanced Test Reactor Critical facility. By verifying and validating the results of the MC21 software with comparisons to other codes and the preliminary irradiation in the Advanced Test Reactor Critical facility, the FSP-1 experiment will be ready to irradiate using the Advanced Test Reactor. This work is concerned with the neutronics analysis of the FSP-1 experiment using the MC21 software.

Stabilizing magnesium plating by a low-cost inorganic surface membrane for high-voltage and high-power Mg batteries

Mg batteries with halide-free electrolytes suffer from poor stability of the Mg metal anode due to electrolyte decomposition. Here, we report a low-cost zeolite membrane supported on Mg to address this challenge. It vastly reduces the population (hence decomposition) of free diglyme at the Mg/electrolyte interface, while allowing facile transport of Mg 2+ cations through the membrane. We demonstrate dendrite-free Mg plating/stripping performance in a magnesium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate/diglyme electrolyte with a 750-fold extended lifetime (over 6,000 h) and a high coulombic efficiency of ~98%. The prototype Mo 3 S 4 cathode paired with the protected Mg anode shows 91% capacity retention over 200 cycles. Importantly, this membrane protects soluble species in a high-voltage organic polymer cathode from being reduced at the anode via shuttling, achieving a full cell with a 3.5 V cutoff voltage. This results in a high specific energy density of 320 Wh kg –1 and a power density of 1,320 W kg –1 based on cathode mass.

A Prototype High-Voltage Pulsed Power Supply for Control of the ITER Shattered Pellet Injection System Flyer Plate Valve

A high-voltage pulsed power supply (HVPPS) has been designed, prototyped, and tested for driving an eddy current actuated propellant valve for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) disruption mitigation system. The high-voltage (HV) dc supply output voltage is software programmable, and the energy storage capacitor bank can be readily reconfigured as 200, 400, 600, and 800 μ F, enabling testing and optimization of both the valve drive and valve systems. Multiple system parameters are monitored before, during, and after each firing of the valve. The system parameters are both displayed and stored for further analysis. Control of the setup, firing sequence, and data collection is automated using a LabVIEW-based control program. The programmability and reconfigurability of this system collectively provide a flexible and robust platform for system refinement and optimization. In this article, a summary of the system will be provided including operational sequences, HV switching and associated triggering methods and circuits, and results measured while firing a solid frozen pellet. Additionally, planned refinement activities toward meeting all requirements for ITER integration will be discussed.

Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Scoping Analysis of Fuel Plate Core Configurations

Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) engines use a nuclear reactor to heat up hydrogen to high temperatures. Thrust is generated as the hydrogen is ejected at high velocity through a nozzle. NTP has the potential of reducing travel times for deep space missions, such as to Mars. The United States studied NTP early in the space age and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is currently revisiting the potential of the technology to enable its missions.

Ability to Simulate Absorption and Melt Pool Dynamics for Laser Melting of Bare Aluminum Plate: Results and Insights from the 2022 Asynchronous AM-Bench Challenge

The 2022 Asynchronous AM-Bench challenge was designed to test the ability of simulations to accurately predict laser power absorption as well as various melt pool behaviors (width, depth, and solidification) during laser melting of solid metal during stationary and scanned laser illumination. In this challenge, participants were asked to predict a series of experimental outcomes. Experimental data were obtained from a series of experiments performed at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratories in 2019. These experiments combined integrating sphere radiometry with high-speed X-ray imaging, allowing for the simultaneous recording of absolute laser power absorption and two-dimensional, projected images of the melt pool. All challenge problems were based on experiments using bare aluminum solid metal. Participants were provided with pertinent experimental information like laser power, scan speed, laser spot size, and material composition. Additionally, participants were given absorptance and X-ray imaging data from stationary and scanned laser experiments on solid Ti–6Al–4V that could be used for testing their models before attempting challenge problems. In total, this challenge received 56 submissions from eight different research groups for eight individual challenge problems. The data for this challenge, and associated information, are available for download from the NIST Public Data Repository. This paper summarizes the results from the 2022 Asynchronous AM-Bench challenge as well as discusses the lessons learned to help inform future challenges.
