Application of redundancy in the Saturn 5 guidance and control system

The Saturn launch vehicle's guidance and control system is so complex that the reliability of a simplex system is not adequate to fulfill mission requirements. Thus, to achieve the desired reliability, redundancy encompassing a wide range of types and levels was employed. At one extreme, the lowest level, basic components (resistors, capacitors, relays, etc.) are employed in series, parallel, or quadruplex arrangements to insure continued system operation in the presence of possible failure conditions. At the other extreme, the highest level, complete subsystem duplication is provided so that a backup subsystem can be employed in case the primary system malfunctions. In between these two extremes, many other redundancy schemes and techniques are employed at various levels. Basic redundancy concepts are covered to gain insight into the advantages obtained with various techniques. Points and methods of application of these techniques are included. The theoretical gain in reliability resulting from redundancy is assessed and compared to a simplex system. Problems and limitations encountered in the practical application of redundancy are discussed as well as techniques verifying proper operation of the redundant channels. As background for the redundancy application discussion, a basic description of the guidance and control system is included.

Three phase full wave dc motor decoder

A three phase decoder for dc motors is disclosed which employs an extremely simple six transistor circuit to derive six properly phased output signals for fullwave operation of dc motors. Six decoding transistors are coupled at their base-emitter junctions across a resistor network arranged in a delta configuration. Each point of the delta configuration is coupled to one of three position sensors which sense the rotational position of the motor. A second embodiment of the invention is disclosed in which photo-optical isolators are used in place of the decoding transistors.

Far infrared observations of IRC + 10216

Results are reported for measurements of IRC + 10216 at 100 microns made with the 91-cm telescope of NASA's Kuiper Airborne Infrared Observatory. The IR photometer employed consisted of a gallium-doped germanium photoconductive detector with a MOSFET preamplifier and load resistor. Signals obtained from the source at modulation frequencies of 30 and 100 Hz are plotted, and the 100-micron flux measurements are shown to be in agreement with previous bolometric measurements. It is noted that the sensitivity of the photoconductive detection system is comparable to that of the conventional bolometers that have been used in airborne IR observations.

A production parylene coating process for hybrid microcircuits

The real impetus for developing a production parylene coating process for internal hybrid passivation came as a result of the possibility of loose conductive particles in hybrid microelectronic circuits, causing intermittent and sometimes permanent failures. Because of the excellent mechanical properties of parylene, it is capable of securing the loose particles in place and prevent such failures. The process of coating described consists of (1) vaporizing the initial charge, which is in the form of a dimer; (2) conversion of the dimer into a reactive monomer; and (3) deposition and subsequent polymerization of the monomer in the deposition chamber which forms a uniform parylene film over all the cold surfaces in contact. Experimental results are discussed in terms of wire bond reliability, resistor drift, high-temperature storage characteristics of parylene, and coating acceptance standards. It is concluded that internal cavities of microelectronic circuits can be successfully coated with parylene provided appropriate tooling is used to protect external leads from the parylene monomer.

Calibration of marginal oscillator sensitivity for use in ICR spectrometry

A constant-reference load is utilized as Q-spoiler in calibrations of relative sensitivity variations of a marginal oscillator with frequency. Frequency-dependent effects troublesome in earlier Q-spoilers are compensated by employing a pure resistive calibration load with compensation for the small distributed capacitance of large resistors. The validity of the approach is demonstrated for a 2:1 mass ratio range, and validity for a mass ratio range greater than 10:1 is claimed. The circuit and technique were developed for use in ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) spectrometric practice.

Three-function signal generator

Variable-frequency circuit develops sine square and triangular waveforms. Three-function generator used variable-rate integrator to generate triangular wave and zero-crossing detector to develop square wave. Sine wave generator uses diode matrix to operate on triangular wave, thus with design harmonic distortion in output is less then one percent. By changing values of outboard resistors and capacitors, same design can be used at higher frequencies.

Adaptation of ion beam technology to microfabrication of solid state devices and transducers

It was found that ion beam texturing of silicon surfaces can be used to increase the effective surface area of MOS capacitors. There is, however, a problem with low dielectric breakdown. Preliminary work was begun on the fabrication of ion implanted resistors on textured surfaces and the potential improvement of wire bond strength by bonding to a textured surface. In the area of ion beam sputtering, the techniques for sputtering PVC were developed. A PVC target containing valinomycin was used to sputter an ion selective membrane on a field effect transistor to form a potassium ion sensor.

Transformer regulated self-stabilizing chopper

A self-stabilizing voltage regulator is described. Direct current voltage regulation employing a series transistor rendered conductive during various portions of a cycle is controlled by saturation of an autotransformer. The constant volt-second capacity of the transformer provides conduction time inverse to the input voltage whereby average output voltage is maintained constant. Conduction commenced in response to short gate signals, and resistor feedback for degenerative turn-off of the transistor was after transformer saturation. Standard output filters are also included.

Window comparator

A window comparator is described, comprising two operational amplifiers, one with two feedback circuits, each feedback circuit having a diode connected to the amplifier output and poled for forward current conduction of opposite polarity, to provide an algebraic difference between an input signal and a selected set-point voltage. Differential input terminals of the second operational amplifier were connected to the separate feedback circuits of the first operational amplifier, one input terminal to the output of one diode, and the other to the output of the other diode. A selected window-width voltage was connected through a coupling resistor to one of the input terminals of the second operational amplifier to determine when the algebraic difference of the input signal and the setpoint voltage has exceeded a predetermined tolerance after that difference has changed signs.

Effect of gravitational and inertial forces on vertical distribution of pulmonary blood flow

Vertical distribution of pulmonary blood flow (VDPBF) was studied, using radioactive microsphere emboli, in dogs without thoracotomy in the right decubitus position during exposure to lateral accelerations of 1, 2, 4, and 6 G. At all levels of force environment studied, an inverse linear relationship was observed between vertical height in the thorax and pulmonary blood flow (ml/min/ml lung tissue) with a decrease in flow to the most dependent region of the lung despite large increases in intravascular pressures at this site. Changes in blood flow were smallest at the mid-lung level, the hydrostatic 'balance point' for vascular and pleural pressures. These force environment-dependent changes in VDPBF are not readily explainable by the Starling resistor analog. Gravity-dependent regional differences in pleural and associated interstitial pressures, plus possible changes in vascular tone resulting from inadequate aeration of blood in the most dependent regions of the lung, probably also affect VDPBF.

Potential damage to dc superconducting magnets due to high frequency electromagnetic waves

Studies of a d.c. superconducting magnet coil indicate that the large coil behaves as a straight waveguide structure. Voltages between layers within the coil sometimes exceeded those recorded at terminals where protective resistors are located. Protection of magnet coils against these excessive voltages could be accomplished by impedance matching throughout the coil system. The wave phenomenon associated with superconducting magnetic coils may create an instability capable of converting the energy of a quiescent d.c. superconducting coil into dissipative a.c. energy, even in cases when dielectric breakdown does not take place.

An electro-optic, high-voltage, transient probe

A newly developed electro-optic voltage transducer is described. It is capable of measuring 30 ns rise time, floating or single-ended, 0 to 20 kV transients in a high noise environment such as a fast discharge laser or energetic switch system. The light output (proportional to voltage) is transmitted remotely via a fiber-optic cable to a detector and recorder. Typical signals and comparison with commercial probe system signals are described.
