Complex magnetic structure in Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 with isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimer

We report detailed magnetic, transport, heat-capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 , a compound consisting of isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimers. We show that this system develops long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N ~ 60 K without structural distortion or metal-insulator-type transition, which is in sharp contrast to other Barium Ruthenate trimer systems such as 9R-BaRuO 3 and Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 . A complex magnetic structure is revealed which is attributable to the magnetic frustration due to competing exchange interactions between Ru ions on different crystallographic sites within the Ru 3 O 12 trimer and different degree of orbital hybridization on different Ru-sites. In conclusion, we have also investigated the magnetic structure of Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 for comparisons.

Epitaxial growth of hexagonal BaNi O 3–δ thin films on SrTi O 3 (111) substrates

Transition metal oxides containing nickel species in oxidation states higher than 3+ often exhibit high catalytic activity, which makes them promising for applications as advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting and fuel cells. Here, we examine the structure and properties of BaNiO 3 (BNO) thin films, containing formally Ni 4+ , grown on SrTiO 3 (111) substrates using oxygen-plasma–assisted molecular beam epitaxy. X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements reveal that BNO films have a hexagonal structure with $c$- and $a$-axes of mixed textures showing epitaxial relationships BNO (0001) ∥ SrTiO 3 (111) and BNO (10$\overline{1}$0) ∥ SrTi O 3 (111), respectively. The formation of the $a$-axis texture is dominant due to the smaller lattice mismatch with the substrate. Here, density functional theory calculations confirm that the hexagonal BNO film with the $a$-axis texture is energetically more favorable than the competing $c$-axis texture. Detailed spectroscopy data analysis indicates that hexagonal BNO films contain mixtures of Ni 2+ , Ni 3+ , and Ni 4+ species, with Ni 4+ being dominant. Our study provides insights into stabilizing Ni 4+ in complex oxides, which is important for further exploration of the potential of materials containing Ni 4+ .

Surface termination effect of $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ substrate on ultrathin $\mathrm{SrRuO_3}$

A uniform 1-unit-cell-high step on the SrTiO 3 (STO) substrate is a prerequisite for growing high-quality epitaxial oxide heterostructures. However, it is inevitable that defects induced by mixed substrate-surface termination exist at the interface, significantly impacting the properties of ultrathin films. Here we microscopically identify the origin for the lateral inhomogeneity in the growth of ultrathin SrRuO3 films due to the step effects of SrTiO 3 (001). By using atomic-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy, we observe two distinct types of step propagation along the [011] and [$0\bar{1}1$] crystallographic direction in SrTiO 3 -SrRuO 3 heterostructures, respectively. In particular, the type-II [$0\bar{1}1$] step results in lateral discontinuity of monolayer SrRuO 3 and originates from the SrO-terminated regions along the TiO 2 -terminated step edge. Such an induced lateral discontinuity should be responsible for the distinct electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer SrRuO 3 . Our findings underscore the critical importance of using single-termination STO substrate to achieve high-quality termination-selective films and to unveil the intrinsic properties of epitaxial films in the atomic limit.

Slow ferromagnetic fluctuations in the kagome metal Sc 3 ⁢ Mn 3 ⁢Al 7 ⁢ Si 5 revealed by 27 Al NMR

Static and dynamical magnetic and electronic properties of the kagome metal Sc 3 ⁢Mn 3 ⁢ Al 7⁢ Si 5 have been investigated by 27 Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Two distinct 27 Al -NMR signals with two different values of quadrupolar frequencies of 𝜈 Q = 1.55(2) and 1.07(2) MHz are observed, which are assigned to Al(1) and Al(2), respectively. From the detailed NMR spectrum measurements under three different magnetic field directions and the density functional theory calculations, the principal axes of the electric field gradient for each Al site have been determined. The temperature dependence of Knight shift (𝐾) shows a similar temperature dependence of the DC magnetic susceptibility 𝜒 except for the low-temperature region below ∼50 K where 𝐾 is almost constant while 𝜒 keeps increasing, which suggests that the increase in 𝜒 at low temperatures is not intrinsic. 27 Al spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature (1/𝑇 1 ⁢𝑇) is found to be constant, confirming the metallic state of Sc 3 ⁢Mn 3 ⁢ Al 7⁢ Si 5 from a microscopic point of view. Based on a Korringa ratio analysis using the 𝑇 1 and 𝐾 data, ferromagnetic fluctuations are found to dominate in Sc 3 ⁢Mn 3 ⁢ Al 7⁢ Si 5 . In conclusion, these fluctuations are suggested to be very slow with frequencies on the order of kilohertz or lower.

Anomalous absorption of electromagnetic waves by 2D transition metal carbonitride Ti 3 CNT x (MXene)

Lightweight, ultrathin, and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are needed to protect electronic circuits and portable telecommunication devices and to eliminate cross-talk between devices and device components. Here, we show that a two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbonitride, Ti 3 CNT x MXene, with a moderate electrical conductivity, provides a higher shielding effectiveness compared with more conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x or metal foils of the same thickness. This exceptional shielding performance of Ti 3 CNT x was achieved by thermal annealing and is attributed to an anomalously high absorption of electromagnetic waves in its layered, metamaterial-like structure. These results provide guidance for designing advanced EMI shielding materials but also highlight the need for exploring fundamental mechanisms behind interaction of electromagnetic waves with 2D materials.

Electrochemical Study on the Kinetic Properties of Fe 2+ /Fe, Ni 2+ /Ni, Cr 2+ /Cr and Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ in Molten MgCl 2 -KCl-NaCl Salts

Here, the fundamental kinetic parameters of corrosion product ions (Fe, Ni and Cr ions) are of significant importance to understand the corrosion mechanisms of the structural materials in the molten salts. In the present study, the fundamental data of Fe 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cr 2+ and Cr 3+ (diffusion coefficient D, exchange current density i 0 , charge transfer coefficient α, limiting current density i L and standard rate constant k0) were measured at different concentrations (1.53 × 10 –6 –7.48 × 10 –4 mol cm –3 ) and temperatures (600 °C–800 °C). The values of D are independent of concentrations and follow Arrhenius law with temperature, which descend in the order of D Cr 2+ > D Fe 2+ > D Cr 3+ > D Ni 2+ with values ranging from 0.94 × 10 –5 to 3.31 × 10 –5 cm 2 s –1 . Both i 0 and k 0 depend on the temperatures, which also follow Arrhenius law.

Scoping studies for low-temperature melting ZnO–Bi 2 O 3 –(B 2 O 3 , SiO 2 ) binder glass

In this work, low melting point glass systems were explored as candidates for binders of solid oxide nuclear wastes which include volatile elements such as radioactive iodine. The base glass systems considered were ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 and ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 -SiO 2 , with specific compositions selected for synthesis trials based on available phase diagrams and a desire to explore the whole glass-forming region. Ten compositions were synthesized by melt quenching. Promising candidate glass binders were selected based on absence of crystallization and favorable thermal properties, including low glass transition temperature (T g ) combined with a high crystallization onset temperature. These thermal properties indicate stable glass forming which would lead to sintering behavior needed for glass binding. Compositional effects include: higher Bi 2 O 3 content lead to lower Tg values, high ZnO content generally led to crystallization on quench, and high SiO 2 content resulted in requirements for excessively high melting temperature. 25ZnO-15Bi 2 O 3 -60B 2 O 3 was down-selected for some detailed crystallization versus time and temperature studies.

Verification Testing of OLI Systems Mixed Solvent Electrolyte Model for the Na-K-Mg-Ca-H-Cl-SO 4 -OH-HCO 3 -CO 3 -CO 2 -H 2 ) System to High Ionic Strength at 25°C

This technical report summarizes model verification results and summary statistics for 41 evaporite mineral solubility cases evaluated by Savannah River National Laboratory using OLI Systems’ aqueous electrolyte thermodynamic modeling software. The 41 verification cases containing a total of 60 solubility curves comprise mineral solubility data from low to high ionic strength at 25°C for the eight-component system Na-K-Mg-Ca-H-Cl-SO 4 -OH-HCO 3 -CO 3 -CO 2 -H 2 O as reported by Harvie et al. (1984). Thermodynamic calculations were executed using OLI Systems’ Stream Analyzer computation module within the OLI Studio software platform (Ver. 11.0, Rev. 11.0.1.9). The Mixed Solvent Electrolyte (MSE) thermodynamic framework was chosen for this investigation because of its superiority in modeling high ionic-strength inorganic salt solutions and actinide redox chemistry and solubility, both of which are relevant to the geological repository conditions at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Mineral solubility data in various inorganic salt solutions were digitized and extracted from figures generated by Harvie et al. (1984). For each of the 60 solubility curves, a case-specific chemistry model and input file were generated in OLI Studio using OLI Stream Analyzer and the MSE (H 3 O + ion) public databank provided by OLI Systems. Model simulation results were exported to Microsoft Excel to calculate summary statistics and to generate graphs comparing the OLI model predictions to the solubility data. Summary statistics include residuals (model – data) and concordance (accuracy × precision, where precision is indicated by the Pearson correlation coefficient and accuracy accounts for bias and scale differential). Private databanks were not developed, and activity coefficient model regressions were not performed to improve OLI model fits to the data. Of the 41 model verification plots, 83% have a mean of the percent residuals less than or equal to 25%. Similarly, 75% display a concordance greater than or equal to 0.75. Only seven of the 41 verification plots fail to show good agreement between the model and data. Of these seven, three are relevant to the WIPP repository because they involve the Mg-OH-Cl-SO 4 -CO 3 aqueous system. The remaining four address salt solubilities at the pH extremes (strong acid and strong base). It should be noted that in two of the three Mg-OH-Cl-SO 4 -CO 3 system cases, the regressed Harvie et al. (1984) solubility curve also deviated from the data. Lack of agreement between the OLI model-predicted solubility curves and the data is attributable to one or more of the following: specific solid species are not included in the OLI MSE databank; there is significant variation among the different solubility datasets chosen by Harvie et al. (1984); the OLI MSE model’s thermodynamic parameters were determined using different solubility datasets; and the activity coefficient parameters for certain relevant ion-ion and ion-molecule pairs have not been optimized via data regression. Two recommendations for future work are to (1) evaluate solubility data for the Mg-OH-Cl-SO 4 -CO 3 system at high ionic strength and, if necessary, develop a private OLI MSE database that includes missing species and, where necessary, regressed standard state properties and interaction parameters; (2) perform similar verification testing of the OLI model for actinide solubility data.

Cooled Gas Turbine and Combined Cycle Analysis for NH 3 -CH 4 Fuel Mixes (Up to 100% NH 3 )

In this study, a cooled gas turbine (GT) analysis was conducted for varying levels of ammonia (NH 3 ) blends with methane. The ultimate goal is to have a gas turbine design that can be used for all the fuel blends (including 100% NH 3 ) without any changes to the system. The technological developments in the cooling system, gas turbine design, and materials that will be required for NH 3 combustion were identified and analyzed in this study to develop an advanced gas turbine design for NH 3 fuels. The study includes a combined cycle performance analysis with the NH 3 fuel blends using the advanced gas turbine design developed in this study. A techno-economic analysis was conducted for analyzing the impact of the NH 3 fuels on the levelized cost of electricity and cost sensitivities to fuel price and capacity factor.

Synergistic Coupling Effect of Electronic Conductivity and Interphase Compatibility on High-Voltage Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 Cathodes

Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 (NVPF) has been considered an up-and-coming cathode material candidate for sodium (Na) ion batteries in light of its high specific capacity and working voltage. However, an erratic cathode/electrolyte interface layer is inevitably formed, accompanied by continuous electrolyte decomposition on the NVPF surface, when the voltage exceeds 4.2 V vs Na + /Na. Herein, the interphase features of NVPF are obviously enhanced owing to the ameliorated electronic conductivity obtained by combining it with carbon nanotubes (CNT). The NVPF with 3 wt % CNT (NVPF@3% CNT) reduces the Na + diffusion kinetic energy barrier and electron transport resistance. Furthermore, the conducting network formed by CNT with sturdy structure strength can promptly accommodate the volumetric changes during sequential Na + extraction/insertion and thus effectively improve the long-term cyclic performance of NVPF/hard carbon full cells. The initial discharge capacity approaches 105 mA h g –1 at 0.5C, and it retains 94% capacity retention after 200 cycles at the temperature of –10 °C. The cathode/electrolyte interphase characterization results further demonstrate that the interphase layer on the NVPF@3% CNT cathode is thinner and more compact compared with pristine samples. Here, this research provides a competitive strategy to facilitate the interfacial compatibility between the NVPF and electrolytes and accelerate the commercialization of high-performance Na-ion batteries.

Stability, electronic quantum states, and magnetic interactions of Er 3+ ions in Ga 2 ⁢O 3

Here, we report an ab initio study of phase stability, defect formation, electronic structure, and multiple magnetic, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, optical, hyperfine, and crystal field interactions in erbium (Er)-doped wide band gap 𝛼- and 𝛽-gallium oxides (Ga 2 ⁢O 3 ), critically important to make a foundation for both optoelectronic and quantum information applications. The chemical, structural, mechanical, and dynamical stabilities of the pristine phases are confirmed from respective negative formation energies, negative cohesive energies, favorable elastic constants, and positive phonon frequencies. The phonon dispersions indicate that the Ga-O bonds are uniform in the 𝛼-phase, while they vary in the 𝛽-phase due to the anisotropic polyhedral movement. The defect formation energy analysis confirms that both Er-doped 𝛼- and 𝛽−Ga 2 ⁢O 3 prefer Er 3+ (neutral) state. The underestimated band gaps of the pristine phases from standard density functional theory (DFT) calculations as compared to experimental values are corrected by employing the hybrid functional calculations, resulting in the indirect band gaps of 5.21 eV in 𝛼−Ga 2 ⁢O 3 and 4.94 eV in 𝛽−Ga 2 ⁢O 3 . The site preference energy analysis indicates partial occupation of Er in the octahedral site of Ga. The anisotropic nature of hyperfine tensor coefficients of Er is similar in both phases, which may be due to the occupation of Er in the same octahedral Ga site. On the other hand, the calculated magnetic exchange interaction between two Er dopants is negative for 𝛼 and positive for 𝛽, indicating an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state in the former and a ferromagnetic (FM) ground state in the latter. Large values of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs) are obtained along the 𝑥 direction in the 𝛼 and along the 𝑦 direction in the 𝛽. The large DMI may support exotic magnetic textures, a promising direction for spintronic applications. The analysis of dielectric constants and refractive indices of both pristine and Er-doped phases shows a good agreement with available experimental values. The calculated optical anisotropy is slightly higher in 𝛽 than those in 𝛼, which is due to the involvement of lower symmetry in 𝛽. The crystal field coefficients (CFCs) calculated from DFT are used to analyze 4⁢𝑓 multiplets and 4⁢𝑓 −4⁢𝑓 transitions. Thus calculated lowest energy level of the first excited state to the lowest energy level of the ground state is about 1.53 µ⁢m, which is in a good agreement with available experiments, and it falls within the quantum telecommunication wavelength range.

Probing Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution at Individual Al:SrTiO 3 /Rh 2–y Cr y O 3 Photocatalyst Particles

Particle-based photocatalysts for overall water splitting convert solar energy into hydrogen fuel without the use of any photovoltaic devices. As such they have the potential to revolutionize renewable energy production on Earth. While proven efficiencies have reached 1.1%, further improvements of photocatalyst technology depend on a better understanding of energy loss mechanisms on the individual particle level. Here, we conduct the first in operando photoelectrochemical measurements on individual micrometer-sized Al-doped SrTiO 3 /Rh 2–y CryO 3 photocatalyst particles. We find that the photocatalyst particles behave mainly as water oxidation photoanodes reaching up to 0.5 mA cm −2 at 0.8 V versus RHE and a photovoltage of ∼1.00 V under 4.7 mW cm −2 ultraviolet illumination. This proves that charge separation in the unbiased Al:SrTiO 3 /Rh 2–y Cr y O 3 catalyst is driven by a junction at the n-semiconductor-liquid contact. While O 2 is detected symmetrically around photocatalyst particles, uneven H 2 evolution profiles reflect an irregular Rh 2–y Cr y O 3 cocatalyst distribution. Additionally, the H 2 evolution activity varies significantly between different photocatalyst particles. Furthermore, this suggests that performance gains are possible by better controlling catalyst composition on the microscale.

The Energy-Energy Correlation in the back-to-back limit at N 3 LO and N 3 LL'

We present the analytic formula for the Energy-Energy Correlation (EEC) in electron-positron annihilation computed in perturbative QCD to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N 3 LO) in the back-to-back limit. In particular, we consider the EEC arising from the annihilation of an electron-positron pair into a virtual photon as well as a Higgs boson and their subsequent inclusive decay into hadrons. Our computation is based on a factorization theorem of the EEC formulated within Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) for the back-to-back limit. We obtain the last missing ingredient for our computation — the jet function — from a recent calculation of the transverse-momentum dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF) at N 3 LO. We combine the newly obtained N 3 LO jet function with the well known hard and soft function to predict the EEC in the back-to-back limit. The leading transcendental contribution of our analytic formula agrees with previously obtained results in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We obtain the N = 2 Mellin moment of the bulk region of the EEC using momentum sum rules. Finally, we obtain the first resummation of the EEC in the back-to-back limit at N 3 LL' accuracy, resulting in a factor of ~ 4 reduction of uncertainties in the peak region compared to N 3 LL predictions.

MOF-Transformed In 2 O 3-x @C Nanocorn Electrocatalyst for Efficient CO 2 Reduction to HCOOH

For electrochemical CO 2 reduction to HCOOH, an ongoing challenge is to design energy efficient electrocatalysts that can deliver a high HCOOH current density (J HCOOH ) at a low overpotential. Indium oxide is good HCOOH production catalyst but with low conductivity. In this work, we report a unique corn design of In 2 O 3-x @C nanocatalyst, wherein In 2 O 3-x nanocube as the fine grains dispersed uniformly on the carbon nanorod cob, resulting in the enhanced conductivity. Excellent performance is achieved with 84% Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 11 mA cm –2 J HCOOH at a low potential of – 0.4 V versus RHE. At the current density of 100 mA cm –2 , the applied potential remained stable for more than 120 h with the FE above 90%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the abundant oxygen vacancy in In 2 O 3-x has exposed more In 3+ sites with activated electroactivity, which facilitates the formation of HCOO* intermediate. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy also confirms In 3+ as the active site and the key intermediate of HCOO* during the process of CO 2 reduction to HCOOH.

Epitaxial columnar growth of strain-free antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn 3 Sn on wurtzite c -plane GaN/Al 2 O 3 (0001)

Weyl semimetal thin films with excellent crystalline quality are of great interest for antiferromagnetic spintronics. Mn 3 Sn is one Weyl semimetal with great properties and promise for exciting science and applications. It has proven very challenging, however, to grow Mn 3 Sn thin films with smooth surfaces, negligible strain, and excellent crystallinity. In this work, we discuss the successful preparation of epitaxial Mn 3 Sn (0001)-oriented thin films via molecular beam epitaxial growth on c -plane wurtzite GaN which was grown by MBE on Al 2 O 3 (0001). We present the reflection high energy electron diffraction analysis along with x-ray diffraction in order to demonstrate the crystalline quality of the film, and we give atomic models to explain the epitaxial orientation relationships between the crystal lattices of the substrate, GaN layer, and Mn 3 Sn layer. Importantly, we discuss the film lattice parameters as compared to expected values, demonstrating negligible strain both in-plane and out-of-plane . Atomic force microscopy reveals an epitaxial columnar growth mode characterized by flat-top-mesa islands, while scanning tunneling microscopy shows the atomically smooth surfaces of the mesa-top structures. Finally, Rutherford backscattering informs the stoichiometry of the film as well as the layer thicknesses.

Post-irradiation examination of low burnup U 3 Si 5 and UN-U 3 Si 5 composite fuels

Here this work presents post-irradiation examination data on UN-U 3 Si 5 and U 3 Si 5 fuels at low burnup (i.e., <10–15 GWd/tHM) with Kanthal AF® cladding. The results suggest good irradiation performance for both the silicide and nitride-silicide composite pellets. Optical microscopy revealed that the pellet-cladding gap is still open, and limited axial cracking was observed only in UN-U 3 Si 5 pellets. Microcracking was isolated to the U 3 Si 5 phase in all cases and was observed in pre-irradiation and depleted pellets, indicating that it was not irradiation induced. The fission gas release was minimal for the calculated fission density achieved (2.6 – 3.15 × 10 20 fiss/cm 3 ). No fission gas bubbles were observed in the optical metallography. These results suggest acceptable swelling and fission gas behavior for both the single phase and composite compositions.

Inclusive studies of two- and three-nucleon short-range correlations in 3 H and 3 He

Inclusive electron scattering at carefully chosen kinematics can isolate scattering from the high-momentum nucleons in short-range correlations (SRCs). SRCs are produced by the hard, short-distance interactions of nucleons in the nucleus, and because the two-nucleon (2N) SRCs arise from the same N-N interaction in all nuclei, the cross section in the SRC-dominated regime is identical up to an overall scaling factor. This scaling behavior has been used to identify SRC dominance and to measure the contribution of SRCs in a wide range of nuclei. We examine this scaling behavior over a range of momentum transfers using new data on 2 H, 3 H, and 3 He, and find an expanded scaling region compared to heavy nuclei. Motivated by this improved scaling, we examine the 3 H and 3 He data in kinematics where three-nucleon SRCs may play an important role. The data for the largest struck nucleon momenta are consistent with isolation of scattering from three-nucleon SRCs, and suggest that the very highest momentum nucleons in 3 He have a nearly isospin-independent momentum configuration.
