Observations in the 1.3 and 1.5 THz atmospheric windows with the Receiver Lab Telescope

The Receiver Lab Telescope (RLT) is a ground-based terahertz telescope; it is currently the only instrument producing astronmical data between 1 and 2 THz. We report on our first measurements o the high CO transitions, which represent the highest frequency detection ever made from the ground. We also present initial observations of {N II} and discuss the implications of this non-detection for the standard estimates of the strength of this line.

Terahertz Radiation Heterodyne Detector Using Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in a GaN Heterostructure

High-resolution submillimeter/terahertz spectroscopy is important for studying atmospheric and interstellar molecular gaseous species. It typically uses heterodyne receivers where an unknown (weak) signal is mixed with a strong signal from the local oscillator (LO) operating at a slightly different frequency. The non-linear mixer devices for this frequency range are unique and are not off-the-shelf commercial products. Three types of THz mixers are commonly used: Schottky diode, superconducting hot-electron bolometer (HEB), and superconductor-insulation-superconductor (SIS) junction. A HEB mixer based on the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the interface of two slightly dissimilar semiconductors was developed. This mixer can operate at temperatures between 100 and 300 K, and thus can be used with just passive radiative cooling available even on small spacecraft.

Aerogel Scattering Filters for Cosmic Microwave Background Observations

We present the design and performance of broadband and tunable infrared-blocking filters for millimeter and sub-millimeter astronomy composed of small scattering particles embedded in an aerogel substrate. The ultra-low-density (< 100 mg/cu cm) aerogel substrate provides an index of refraction as low as 1.05, removing the need for anti-reflection coatings and allowing for broadband operation from DC to above 1 THz. The size distribution of the scattering particles can be tuned to provide a variable cutoff frequency. Aerogel filters with embedded high-resistivity silicon powder are being produced at 40-cm diameter to enable large-aperture cryogenic receivers for cosmic microwave background polarimeters, which require large arrays of sub-Kelvin detectors in their search for the signature of an inflationary gravitational-wave background.

The size distribution of the scattering particles can be tuned to provide a variable cutoff frequency. Integrated Silicon Platform for Co-planar Design of Vertically Stacked 2.06 THz Mixer Module

The process for fabricating and utilizing the threedimensional Si stack receiver front-end is described in this paper. The capability to have exact dimensionality becomes essential as frequency scales due to the complexity arising in assembly and finer tolerances. Total process yields can be improved through Si fabrication by verifying achievement of specified tolerances lithographically and compatibility to rapid process changes and design fine-tuning. The integrated Si platform with the mounted device is shown in Figure 1. Signal I/O and alignment modalities enable lownoise measurements. Silicon micromachining provides the necessary accuracy for integration at the several THz regime. Particularly, processing and etch recipes have demonstrated smooth surfaces of < 1 μm surface roughness. In consideration is pre-compensating for minute offsets, matching mechanical strain on all interfaces, and including passive alignment verification in the design. As compared to metal blocks, computer numerical controlled (CNC) milling can produce slight burrs in the interfaces resulting in misalignment and resultant strain between two pieces of components. Furthermore, Si integration can make possible arrays of pixel transceivers through compact subsystems for the purpose of measuring multiple lines of spectral content simultaneously in space.

Low-loss monolithic transmission lines for submillimeter and terahertz frequency applications

The design and construction of low-loss monolithic transmission lines are critical to systems which require that terahertz-power be guided to the antenna front ends. Two types of novel monolithic guiding structures, designed for the 0.3-2.0 THz and 0.1-0.3 THz ranges, respectively, are proposed. The novel waveguides are constructed from dielectric materials and structures which are available in monolithic technology so that the integration of active devices is possible. Propagation in each of the waveguides is characterized over relevant frequency ranges by applying a mode-matching technique, which takes into account all forms of electromagnetic coupling as well as losses in the dielectrics. The structures are predicted to exhibit excellent power confinement and low losses.

Frequency-domain terahertz spectroscopy using long-carrier-lifetime photoconductive antennas

We present a telecommunication-compatible frequency-domain terahertz spectroscopy system realized by novel photoconductive antennas without using short-carrier-lifetime photoconductors. Built on a high-mobility InGaAs photoactive layer, these photoconductive antennas are designed with plasmonics-enhanced contact electrodes to achieve highly confined optical generation near the metal/semiconductor surface, which offers ultrafast photocarrier transport and, hence, efficient continuous-wave terahertz operation including both generation and detection. Consequently, using two plasmonic photoconductive antennas as a terahertz source and a terahertz detector, we successfully demonstrate frequency-domain spectroscopy with a dynamic range more than 95 dB and an operation bandwidth of 2.5 THz. Moreover, this novel approach to terahertz antenna design opens up a wide range of new possibilities for many different semiconductors and optical excitation wavelengths to be utilized, therefore bypassing short-carrier-lifetime photoconductors with limited availability.

THz heterodyne spectrometers, capable of providing spectral resolution of >106 and detection sensitivity in the parts-per-billion range, provide a unique capability for space exploration. The exact operating frequency and technology for the instrument is driven largely by the science that is being investigated along with pragmatic concerns for mass and power requirements. These instruments are examples of highly complex systems that involve design, integration and testing of diverse technologies such as THz cryogenic detectors, optical elements, and microwave and submillimeter-wave components. This paper will review some of the advanced microwave and submillimeter-wave technologies that are being developed to create the next generation of THz instruments for space exploration.

In situ plant materials hyperspectral imaging by multimodal scattering near-field optical microscopy

Plant cells are elaborate three-dimensional polymer nano-constructs with complex chemistry. The bulk response of plants to light, in the far-field, is ultimately encoded by optical scattering from these nano-constructs. Their chemical and physical properties may be acquired through their interaction with a modulated nano-tip using scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy. Here, using this technique, we present 20 nm spatial resolution mechanical, spectral and optical mappings of plant cell walls. We first address the problem of plant polymers tracking through pretreatment and processing. Specifically, cellulose and lignin footprints are traced within a set of delignified specimen, establishing the factors hindering complete removal of lignin, an important industrial polymer. Furthermore, we determine the frequency dependent dielectric function ${\epsilon }(\omega)={(n+ik)}^{2}$ of plant material in the range 28 ≤ ω ≤ 58 THz, and show how the environmental chemical variation is imprinted in the nanoscale variability of n and k . This nanometrology is a promise for further progress in the development of plant-based (meta-)materials.

Tuning a Tetrahertz Wire Laser

Tunable terahertz lasers are desirable in applications in sensing and spectroscopy because many biochemical species have strong spectral fingerprints at terahertz frequencies. Conventionally, the frequency of a laser is tuned in a similar manner to a stringed musical instrument, in which pitch is varied by changing the length of the string (the longitudinal component of the wave vector) and/ or its tension (the refractive index). However, such methods are difficult to implement in terahertz semiconductor lasers because of their poor outcoupling efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate a novel tuning mechanism based on a unique 'wire laser' device for which the transverse dimension w is much much less than lambda. Placing a movable object close to the wire laser manipulates a large fraction of the waveguided mode propagating outside the cavity, thereby tuning its resonant frequency. Continuous single-mode redshift and blueshift tuning is demonstrated for the same device by using either a dielectric or metallic movable object. In combination, this enables a frequency tuning of approximately equal to 137 GHz (3.6%) from a single laser device at approximately equal to 3.8 THz.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Empowered THz Communication in LEO Satellite Networks

Massive swarms of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites are poising to serve for high-speed and low-latency ubiquitous connectivity with almost global coverage. Broadband inter-satellite communication is one of the key elements of satellite communication systems that orchestrate massive satellite swarms in cooperation. Thanks to technological advancements in microelectronics and micro-systems, the terahertz (THz) band has emerged as a strong candidate for inter-satellite links (ISLs) due to its promise of wideband communication. Especially, multi-antenna systems can improve the system performance along with the wideband supported by the THz band. However, multi-antenna systems should be reconsidered due to their size, weight, and price/power (SWaP) constraints. On the other hand, as a state-of-art multi-antenna technology, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is able to relax SWaP constraints because of its passive component-based structures. However, as similar reflection characteristic throughout wideband is difficult to meet, it is possible to observe beam misalignment. In this work, we first provide an assessment of the use of the THz band for ISLs and quantify the impact of misalignment fading on error performance. Then, in order to compensate for the high path loss associated with high carrier frequencies, and to further improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we propose the use of RISs mounted on neighboring satellites to enable signal propagation. Based on a mathematical analysis of the problem, we present the error rate expressions for RIS-assisted ISLs with misalignment fading. Also, numerical results show that RIS can leverage the error rate performance and achievable capacity of THz ISLs.

Harmonic and Subharmonic RF Injection Locking of THz Metasurface Quantum-Cascade VECSEL

Harmonic and subharmonic RF injection locking is demonstrated in a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL). By tuning the RF injection frequency around integer multiples and submultiples of the cavity round-trip frequency, different harmonic and subharmonic orders can be excited in the same device. Modulation-dependent behavior of the device has been studied with recorded lasing spectral broadening and locking bandwidths in each case. In particular, harmonic injection locking results in the observation of harmonic spectra with bandwidths over 200 GHz. A semiclassical Maxwell-density matrix formalism has been applied to interpret QC-VECSEL dynamics, which aligns well with experimental observations.

An infrared search for extraterrestrial laser signals

The focus of project SETI is on microwave frequencies, where receivers fundamentally have the best sensitivity for the detection of narrow band signals. Such receivers, when coupled to existing radio telescopes, form an optimum system for broad area searches over the sky. Detection of narrow band infrared signals is best done with a laser heterodyne reciever similar in function to a microwave spectral line receiver. A receiver was built for astrophysical observations at 30 THz (10 microns) and the spectrometer is being adapted for SETI work. The receiver uses a small CO2 laser as the local oscillator, a HgCdTe diode as the photomixer, and a multichannel intermediate frequency (IF) filterbank. An advanced multichannel IF processor is now being built to detect infrared line radiation in 1000 spectral channels each 1 MHz wide. When completed this processor will be used with a ground based telescope next year for a survey of several hundred selected stars for narrow band CO2 laser signals at 30 THz.

Antennas for Space Instruments from GHz to THz

In this paper we present an overview of different antenna technologies for space-based instruments. We show that some of the designs that work well at gigahertz frequencies are difficult to implement at terahertz frequencies due to tight tolerance and rms surface finish requirements. We also show that antenna designs are dictated not only by the frequency of operations but also by the space platform of choice. In this paper, we also present ideas for low-profile terahertz antennas for implementation on SmallSat and CubeSat platforms.

Progress in ITER ECE diagnostic design and integration

The ITER electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostic system has primary roles in providing measurements of the core electron temperature profile and the electron temperature fluctuation associated with the neoclassical tearing modes. The ITER ECE system includes a radial and oblique line-of-sight. Four 43-meter long low-loss transmission lines (TLs) are designed to transmit millimeter wave power in the frequency range of 70–1000 GHz in both X- and O-mode polarization from the port plug to the ECE instrumentation room in the diagnostic building. The measurement instrumentation includes two Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) systems and two radiometer systems. The Indian Domestic Agency (IN-DA) and United States Domestic Agency share the responsibility. The IN-DA scope excluding instrumentation and control has passed its preliminary design review and is progressing towards the final design review (FDR). In parallel, the diagnostic integration in different areas is ongoing. Furthermore, several captive components for the TLs have passed FDR and will be manufactured for installation in the tokamak building soon. A peer review meeting has been held on the prototype hot calibration source, and its integration and new thermal analysis in the diagnostic shield module are continuing. A prototype TL is being tested. A prototype polarizing Martin-Puplett type FTS, operating in the frequency range 70–1000 GHz, features an in-vacuo fast scanning mechanism and a cryo-cooled dual-channel THz detector system. Its performance has been assessed in detail against ITER requirements.

Highly Elliptic Circular Dichroism of Copper Aspartate One-Dimensional Nanostructures across the Ultraviolet to Terahertz Ranges

Since the discovery of chirality, circular dichroism (CD) of mirror-asymmetric molecules has been studied across the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared ranges. Recently, chiroptical activity studies have expanded to the terahertz (THz) range, where resonance peaks originate from collective vibrations of tens and hundreds of atoms. Here, in this study, we synthesized Cu 2+ coordination complexes with L- and D-aspartic acid as nanowires and nanorods and characterized their chiroptical activity across multiple frequency ranges. Both chiral nanostructures exhibit strong electronic CD (ECD), primarily from Cu 2+ d-d transitions, while vibrational CD (VCD) spectra show sharp C=O, C–H, and O–H vibronic peaks, indicating higher atomic defect densities in nanorods than nanowires. Although THz CD (TCD) spectra are broad, they exhibit ∼1000× greater ellipticity than ECD and VCD, perhaps warranting previous references to circular dichroism of nanostructures as giant. Comparative TCD analysis highlights strong chiral phonon sensitivity, underscoring its potential for probing defect densities and structural changes for various chiral nanostructures and (bio)crystals.
