Application of propagation predictions to Earth/space telecommunications system design

The corresponding between a given propagation phenomenon and system performance is considered. Propagation data are related to system performance parameters, allowing the systems engineer to perform the analyses determining how well requirements are met by a given system design, and enabling the systems engineer to modify that design if necessary. The various ways of specifying performance criteria for different kinds of systems are discussed, and a general procedure for system design is presented and demonstrated.

The telecommunications and data acquisition report

Deep Space Network operations, engineering, and implementation are reported. Developments in Earth-based radiotechnology as applied to other research programs in the fields of Geodynamics, Astrophysics, and programs related to radio searchers (instrumentation and methods) in extraterrestrial areas in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum are also presented.

Telecommunications and data acquisition systems support for the Viking 1975 mission to Mars, volume 5

The support provided by the Deep Space Network to the Viking Project from 1 June 1978 to 30 April 1980 is described. The project was supported by the worldwide network of Deep Space Stations with 26- and 64-meter-diameter antennas, together with a ground communications system, for the transmission of commands, telemetry, radio metric data, and operational instructions between the stations and the network operation control center in Pasadena, California. Assistance was substantially less than in the previous phases of the Viking Project in order to provide adequate support to the Pioneer and Voyager Projects.

The telecommunications and data acquisition report

Developments in Earth-based radio technology are reported. The Deep Space Network is discussed in terms of its advanced systems, network and facility engineering and implementation, operations, and energy sources. Problems in pulse communication and radio frequency interference are addressed with emphasis on pulse position modulation and laser beam collimation.

Antenna arraying performance for deep space telecommunications systems

Antenna arraying is a crucial Deep Space Network technique in maximizing the science return of planetary and comet encounters. The equations which describe the total figure of merit for a multiple system of arrayed antennas are developed. An example is given for three Canberra DSN antennas and the Parkes 64-m antenna to be arrayed for the Voyager 2 Uranus flyby.

Telecommunications and data acquisition systems support for the Viking 1975 mission to Mars

The background for the Viking Lander Monitor Mission (VLMM) is given, and the technical and operational aspects of the tracking and data acquisition support that the Network was called upon to provide are described. An overview of the science results obtained from the imaging, meteorological, and radio science data is also given. The intensive efforts that were made to recover the mission are described.
