VOTCA: multiscale frameworks for quantum and classical simulations in soft matter

Many physical phenomena in liquids and soft matter are multiscale by nature and can involve processes with quantum and classical degrees of freedom occurring over a vast range of length- and timescales. Examples range from structure formation processes of complex polymers or even polymer blends (Svaneborg & Everaers, 2023) on the classical side to charge and energy transport and conversion processes (Lee et al., 2019) involving explicit electronic and, therefore, quantum information. The Versatile Object-oriented Toolkit for Coarse-graining Applications (VOTCA) provides multiscale frameworks built on a comprehensive set of methods for the development of classical coarse-grained potentials (VOTCA-CSG) as well as state-of-the art excited state electronic structure methods based on density-functional and many-body Green’s function theories, coupled in mixed quantum-classical models and used in kinetic network models (VOTCA-XTP).

SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria User Manual - Version 4.56

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process ows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number (Re < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newtons method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic h-adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Arias more advanced capabilities.

Distributed Resources for the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) Advanced Management (DREAM). Final Report

Distributed Resources for the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) Advanced Management (DREAM) is a proposed system that will enable data from an infinite number of diverse sources to be organized and accessed from anywhere using any handheld or other computer device. The approach offers a powerful roadmap for the creation and integration of a unified knowledge base of an entire ecosystem, including its many geophysical, geographical, social, political, agricultural, energy, transportation, and cyber aspects. The resulting aggregation of data has the potential to generate an informational universe of unprecedented size that has never before been possible due to the prohibitive costs, managerial complexity, and technical barriers associated with ever-changing exponential-growth data flows. We envision that DREAM will accelerate discovery by enabling climate researchers, among other types of researchers, to manage, analyze, and visualize data from earth-scale measurements and simulations. DREAM’s success will be built on proven components that leverage existing services and resources. A key building block for DREAM will be the ESGF, chaired by Dean N. Williams. Expanding on the existing ESGF, the project will ensure that the access, storage, movement, and analysis of the large quantities of data that are processed and produced by diverse science projects can be dynamically distributed with proper resource management. Much of the Office of Science data is currently generated by multiple stand-alone facilities. DREAM can collect data accumulated from these facilities and incorporate it into a fully integrated network accessible from anywhere in the world. The result is a completely new paradigm shift for data management, analysis, and visualization enabling researchers to: Manage their calculations, data, tools, and research results; Ensure that all data are sharable, reproducible and (re)usable—accompanied by appropriate metadata describing its provenance, syntax, and semantics at creation; Advance application performance by selectively adapting APIs and services in response to scientific requirements and architectural complexities; and Provide scalable interactive resource management—navigate data and metadata at multiple levels, provide architecture-aware data integration, analysis and visualization tools. We will engage closely with DOE, NASA, and NOAA science groups working at the leading edge of computing. These engagements—in domains such as biology, climate, and hydrology—will allow us to advance disciplinary science goals and inform our development of technologies that can accelerate discovery across DOE more broadly. We will advertise and promote our technologies via dedicated workshops, tutorials, and sessions at conferences, stand-alone events with broad inter-disciplinary invitation, and engagements with leadership facilities.

FY2019 Materials Annual Progress Report

The Materials Technology Program supports the Vehicle Technologies Office’s (VTO’s) mission to help consumers and businesses reduce their transportation energy costs while meeting or exceeding vehicle performance expectations. The propulsion materials research portfolio seeks to develop higher performance materials that can withstand increasingly extreme environments and address the future properties needed for a variety of high-efficiency powertrain types, sizes, fueling concepts, and combustion modes. The lightweight materials research portfolio enables improvements in fuel economy by providing properties that are equal to or better than traditional materials at a lower weight. Because it takes less energy to accelerate a lighter object, replacing cast-iron and traditional steel components with lightweight materials such as advanced high-strength steels, magnesium (Mg) alloys, aluminum (Al) alloys, and fiber-reinforced polymer composites can directly reduce a vehicle’s fuel consumption. By 2025, Materials Technology research activities seek to enable a 25% weight reduction of the glider for light-duty (LD) vehicles including body, chassis, and interior as compared to a 2015 baseline at no more than a $5/lb-saved increase in cost.

2021 Stewardship Science Academic Programs Annual

I am a staff scientist at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). I work on multiple fundamental-science projects and lead modeling/data-analysis for the stellar opacity experiments. I also work with theorists to refine plasma material-property calculations to make NNSA simulations more predictable. These are challenging and important problems for national security. In fact, our experiments raised questions about “opacity”, the property of matter that controls energy transport inside stars. This work was published by Nature due to its serious implication over broad applications, and our team received NNSA Defense Program Award of Excellence, both in 2015. Work at SNL is collegial and full of learning through interactions with the world’s finest experimentalists and theorists. When I started my Ph.D. program, working at a national lab was a dream position. Today, I collaborate with top scientists to solve mission-critical problems. The Stewardship Science Academic Programs (SSAP) and National Laser Users’ Facility (NLUF) played a vital role in the efficient learning and seamless transition to SNL.

Expanding the Knock/Emissions/Misfire Limits for the Realization of Ultra-Low Emissions, High Efficiency Heavy Duty Natural Gas Engines

The Vehicle Technologies Office funds early-stage, high-risk research to develop technology upon which industry can implement innovative transportation energy technologies that increase efficiency, decrease cost, and expand use of domestic energy sources, such as natural gas (NG). To improve the viability of medium and heavy-duty vehicles the natural gas engine efficiency must be closer to that of diesel. This work addresses fundamental limitations to achieve diesel-like efficiencies in heavy duty on-road natural gas engines. The primary goal of this research is to achieve diesel-like efficiencies in heavy duty on-road NG engines, focusing on the Cummins 15 liter engine platform (baseline diesel efficiency of 44% at peak torque). That goal has been achieved, though more work is needed to facilitate practical implementation of the developed technologies.
