Digital 8-DPSK Modem For Trellis-Coded Communication

Digital real-time modem processes octuple differential-phase-shift-keyed trellis-coded modulation. Intended for use in communicating data at rate up to 4.8 kb/s in land-mobile satellite channel (Rician fading) of 5-kHz bandwidth at carrier frequency of 1 to 2 GHz. Modulator and demodulator contain digital signal processors performing modem functions. Design flexible in that functions altered via software. Modem successfully tested and evaluated in both laboratory and field experiments, including recent full-scale satellite experiment. In all cases, modem performed within 1 dB of theory. Other communication systems benefitting from this type of modem include land mobile (without satellites), paging, digitized voice, and frequency-modulation subcarrier data broadcasting.

Error control techniques for satellite and space communications

The performance of bandwidth efficient trellis codes on channels with phase jitter, or those disturbed by jamming and impulse noise is analyzed. An heuristic algorithm for construction of bandwidth efficient trellis codes with any constraint length up to about 30, any signal constellation, and any code rate was developed. Construction of good distance profile trellis codes for sequential decoding and comparison of random coding bounds of trellis coded modulation schemes are also discussed.

Image processing using Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) technology

The need to increase the information return from space-borne imaging systems has increased in the past decade. The use of multi-spectral data has resulted in the need for finer spatial resolution and greater spectral coverage. Onboard signal processing will be necessary in order to utilize the available Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) communication channel at high efficiency. A generally recognized approach to the increased efficiency of channel usage is through data compression techniques. The compression technique implemented is a differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) scheme with a non-uniform quantizer. The need to advance the state-of-the-art of onboard processing was recognized and a GaAs integrated circuit technology was chosen. An Adaptive Programmable Processor (APP) chip set was developed which is based on an 8-bit slice general processor. The reason for choosing the compression technique for the Multi-spectral Linear Array (MLA) instrument is described. Also a description is given of the GaAs integrated circuit chip set which will demonstrate that data compression can be performed onboard in real time at data rate in the order of 500 Mb/s.

Some implications of TCM for optical direct-detection channels

Consideration is given to the optical direct-detection channel, and it is shown how simple trellis-coded modulation (TCM) can be used to improve performance or increase throughput (in bits per second) without bandwidth expansion or performance loss. In fact, a modest performance gain can be achieved. Although the approach can be used with other signal constellations, the authors concentrate on signals derived from the pulse-position modulation (PPM) format by allowing overlap. Theoretical motivation for using this signal set, known as overlapping PPM (OPPM), was recently given by David and Kaplan (1984), who showed a capacity gain when overlap is introduced.

Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA): Analysis of the instrumentation subsystem

The results of the Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA) of the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Critical Items List (CIL) are presented. The IOA approach features a top-down analysis of the hardware to determine failure modes, criticality, and potential critical items. To preserve independence, this analysis was accomplished without reliance upon the results contained within the NASA FMEA/CIL documentation. The independent analysis results for the Instrumentation Subsystem are documented. The Instrumentation Subsystem (SS) consists of transducers, signal conditioning equipment, pulse code modulation (PCM) encoding equipment, tape recorders, frequency division multiplexers, and timing equipment. For this analysis, the SS is broken into two major groupings: Operational Instrumentation (OI) equipment and Modular Auxiliary Data System (MADS) equipment. The OI equipment is required to acquire, condition, scale, digitize, interleave/multiplex, format, and distribute operational Orbiter and payload data and voice for display, recording, telemetry, and checkout. It also must provide accurate timing for time critical functions for crew and payload specialist use. The MADS provides additional instrumentation to measure and record selected pressure, temperature, strain, vibration, and event data for post-flight playback and analysis. MADS data is used to assess vehicle responses to the flight environment and to permit correlation of such data from flight to flight. The IOA analysis utilized available SS hardware drawings and schematics for identifying hardware assemblies and components and their interfaces. Criticality for each item was assigned on the basis of the worst-case effect of the failure modes identified.

Context dependent prediction and category encoding for DPCM image compression

Efficient compression of image data requires the understanding of the noise characteristics of sensors as well as the redundancy expected in imagery. Herein, the techniques of Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM) are reviewed and modified for information-preserving data compression. The modifications include: mapping from intensity to an equal variance space; context dependent one and two dimensional predictors; rationale for nonlinear DPCM encoding based upon an image quality model; context dependent variable length encoding of 2x2 data blocks; and feedback control for constant output rate systems. Examples are presented at compression rates between 1.3 and 2.8 bits per pixel. The need for larger block sizes, 2D context dependent predictors, and the hope for sub-bits-per-pixel compression which maintains spacial resolution (information preserving) are discussed.

Digital codec for real-time processing of broadcast quality video signals at 1.8 bits/pixel

The authors present the hardware implementation of a digital television bandwidth compression algorithm which processes standard NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) composite color television signals and produces broadcast-quality video in real time at an average of 1.8 b/pixel. The sampling rate used with this algorithm results in 768 samples over the active portion of each video line by 512 active video lines per video frame. The algorithm is based on differential pulse code modulation (DPCM), but additionally utilizes a nonadaptive predictor, nonuniform quantizer, and multilevel Huffman coder to reduce the data rate substantially below that achievable with straight DPCM. The nonadaptive predictor and multilevel Huffman coder combine to set this technique apart from prior-art DPCM encoding algorithms. The authors describe the data compression algorithm and the hardware implementation of the codec and provide performance results.

Use of residual redundancy in the design of joint source/channel coders

A technique for providing error protection without the additional overhead required for channel coding is developed, starting from the premise that, during source coder design, for the sake of simplicity or due to imperfect knowledge, assumptions have to be made about the source which are often incorrect. This results in residual redundancy at the output of the source coder. The residual redundancy can then be used to provide error protection in much the same way as the insertion of redundancy in convolutional coding provides error protection. To show the validity of this approach, it is applied to image coding using differential pulse code modulation (DPCM). Substantial performance gains are obtained, in terms of both objective and subjective measures.

Performance evaluation of land mobile satellite system under vegetative shadowing using differential multiple TCM and QPSK

A comparative analysis by computer simulation of the land mobile satellite system (LMSS) is presented for the uncoded quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), rate 2/3 8-PSK trellis coded modulation (TCM), and rate 4/6 multiplicity 2 8-PSK TCM schemes. An analytical model is used for simulating the fading channel. The simulation results show that under Rayleigh fades, the TCM designed for the fading channel is superior to uncoded QPSK and to the conventional TCM optimized for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The performance of differentially detected TCM under AWGN and fading is examined based on the preliminary results. Results of the uncoded QPSK with fading channel modeled with the empirical fade data are given.

Real-time demonstration hardware for enhanced DPCM video compression algorithm

The lack of available wideband digital links as well as the complexity of implementation of bandwidth efficient digital video CODECs (encoder/decoder) has worked to keep the cost of digital television transmission too high to compete with analog methods. Terrestrial and satellite video service providers, however, are now recognizing the potential gains that digital video compression offers and are proposing to incorporate compression systems to increase the number of available program channels. NASA is similarly recognizing the benefits of and trend toward digital video compression techniques for transmission of high quality video from space and therefore, has developed a digital television bandwidth compression algorithm to process standard National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) composite color television signals. The algorithm is based on differential pulse code modulation (DPCM), but additionally utilizes a non-adaptive predictor, non-uniform quantizer and multilevel Huffman coder to reduce the data rate substantially below that achievable with straight DPCM. The non-adaptive predictor and multilevel Huffman coder combine to set this technique apart from other DPCM encoding algorithms. All processing is done on a intra-field basis to prevent motion degradation and minimize hardware complexity. Computer simulations have shown the algorithm will produce broadcast quality reconstructed video at an average transmission rate of 1.8 bits/pixel. Hardware implementation of the DPCM circuit, non-adaptive predictor and non-uniform quantizer has been completed, providing realtime demonstration of the image quality at full video rates. Video sampling/reconstruction circuits have also been constructed to accomplish the analog video processing necessary for the real-time demonstration. Performance results for the completed hardware compare favorably with simulation results. Hardware implementation of the multilevel Huffman encoder/decoder is currently under development along with implementation of a buffer control algorithm to accommodate the variable data rate output of the multilevel Huffman encoder. A video CODEC of this type could be used to compress NTSC color television signals where high quality reconstruction is desirable (e.g., Space Station video transmission, transmission direct-to-the-home via direct broadcast satellite systems or cable television distribution to system headends and direct-to-the-home).

Soft-decision Viterbi decoding with diversity combining

Diversity combining methods for convolutional coded and soft-decision Viterbi decoded channels in mobile satellite communications systems are evaluated and it is clarified that the pre-Viterbi-decoding maximal ratio combining shows better performance than other methods in Rician fading channels by computer simulation. A novel practical technique for maximal ratio combining is proposed, in which the coefficients for weighting are derived from soft-decision demodulated signals only. The proposed diversity combining method with soft-decision Viterbi decoding requires simple hardware and shows satisfactory performance with slight degradation of 0.3 dB in Rician fading channels compared with an ideal weighting scheme. Furthermore, this diversity method is applied to trellis coded modulation and significant Pe performance improvement is achieved.

A simple implementation of the Viterbi algorithm on the Motorola DSP56001

As systems designers design communication systems with digital rather than analog components to reduce noise and increase channel capacity, they must have the ability to perform traditional communication algorithms digitally. The use of trellis coded modulation as well as the extensive use of convolutional encoding for error detection and correction requires an efficient digital implementation of the Viterbi Algorithm for real time demodulation and decoding. Digital signal processors are now fast enough to implement Viterbi decoding in conjunction with the normal receiver/transmitter functions for lower speed channels on a single chip as well as performing fast decoding for higher speed channels, if the algorithm is implemented efficiently. The purpose of this paper is to identify a good way to implement the Viterbi Algorithm (VA) on the Motorola DSP56001, balancing performance considerations with speed and memory efficiency.

These equations reduce amount of computation and time needed to determine allocations of frequency and power among competing radio-communication systems or to determine whether two different radio-communication systems compatible.
