Effect of front and rear incident proton irradiation on silicon solar cells

Four solar cell types of current manufacture were irradiated through the front and rear surfaces with protons in the energy range between 1 and 10 MeV. The solar cell parameters varied for this study were cell thickness and back surface field (BSF) vs. no BSF. Some cells were irradiated at normal incidence and an equal number were irradiated with simulated isotropic fluences. The solar cell electrical characteristics were measured under simulated AM0 illumination after each fluence. Using the normal incidence data, proton damage coefficients were computed for all four types of cells for both normal and omnidirectional radiation fields. These were found to compare well with the omnidirectional damage coefficients derived directly from the rear-incidence radiation data. Similarly, the rear-incidence omnidirectional radiation data were used to compute appropriate damage coefficients. A method for calculating the effect of a spectrum of energies is derived from these calculations. It is suitable for calculating the degradation of cells in space when they have minimal rear-surface shielding.

Chemistry and petrology of the Apennine Front, Apollo 15. I - KREEP basalts and plutonic rocks. II - Impact melt rocks

The mineralogy, petrology, and chemistry of rock fragments for the Apennine Front coarse fines (10-4 and 4-2 mm) have been determined. The data are consistent with a single eruptive event that produced several flows. It is found that most of the plutonic rocks are ferroan in nature, with a few belonging to the Mg-suite. The mineral and bulk chemistry of KREEP basalts and the composition of ferroan anorthosites are discussed. Petrographic studies of 21 impact melts are also presented, showing a variety of textures. It is found that the Apollo 15 impact melts are mixtures of low-K Fra Mauro, KREEP, and plutonic components. The Ni/Ir ratios of the melt rocks are shown to be greater than chondritic values, indicating ancient and/or iron meteorite components.

The reliability of macroscopic identification of lunar coarse fines particles and the petrogenesis of 2-4 mm particles in Apennine Front sample 15243

Particles from the 15243 Apennine Front sample (Station 6) were studied using macroscopic, neutron activation, and petrographic methods. It was found that macroscopic identifications allow for good identification of the particles. It was shown that the Station 6 regolith must consist of a fine-grained, comparatively KREEP-poor material and a coarser component consisting of Apollo 15 KREEP basalts and KREEP-like impact melt fragments.

On the horizontal resolution of fronts in numerical weather prediction models

A two-dimensional model is used to study the ability of current numerical weather prediction models to capture frontogenesis and to determine frontal motion. Particular attention is given to the ability of a simulation with a very coarse grid to represent the dynamics of a frontogenetically-active model cold front in a simulation with a relatively fine grid. A resolution between 50 and 100 km is satisfactory for capturing frontal scale motions.

Simulation study of the ionizing front in the critical ionization velocity phenomenon

The simulation of the critical ionization velocity for a neutral gas cloud moving across the static magnetic field is presented. A low-beta plasma is studied, using a two and a half-dimensional electrostatic code linked with the Plasma and Neutral Interaction Code (Goertz and Machida, 1987). The physics of the ionizing front and the instabilities which occur there are discussed. Results are presented from four numerical runs designed so that the effects of the charge separation field can be distinguished from the wave heating.

Ultrasonic verification of five wave fronts in unidirectional graphite epoxy composite

The existence of five different waves fronts in a unidirectional graphite fiber reinforced epoxy composite with energy flux propagation at the angle of 60 deg with respect to the fiber direction is verified by measuring their corresponding group and phase velocities of longitudinal and shear waves using the through transmission technique. The experimental and theoretical values of phase velocities show excellent agreement for all three modes of wave propagation. It is also verified that the maximum output voltage amplitude is obtained when the line joining the centers of the transmitting and receiving transducers is parallel to the energy propagation direction defined by the deviation angle.

The Bode integrals and wave front tilt control

This paper reviews four of Bode's (1940) integrals and what those integrals tell about feedback design in the frequency domain. The resulting design paradigm is known as the Bode ideal cutoff. The Bode ideal cutoff design can be done with pencil and paper and without requiring that the compensator be of a certain fixed order or even a rational function of frequency. The Bode ideal cutoff is applied to the preliminary feedback design of wave front tilt control by two mirrors on a space based interferometer. The design example illustrates how the Bode ideal cutoff takes into account bandwidth, sensor noise constraints, and uncertainties via stability margins, and then maximizes the feedback (loop gain or disturbance rejection) over a prescribed frequency band.

The dielectric-filled parabola - A new millimeter/submillimeter wavelength receiver/transmitter front end

A design is presented for a semi-integrated millimeter/submillimeter wavelength receiver/transmitter front end incorporating a planar antenna and a solid-state device in an efficient feed structure which can be matched directly to high f-number optical systems. The feed system combines the simplicity and robustness of a dielectric substrate lens with the high gain of a parabolic reflector in a single structure that is termed a dielectric-filled parabola. The same fundamental unit can be configured as either a heterodyne or direct detection mode receiver, a power transmitter or a frequency multiplier by changing out the solid-state device and/or the integrated antenna. The structure can also be used with a small integrated antenna array in a multibeam or imaging arrangement. Design and fabrication details for the feed system are given. These are followed by beam pattern and impedance measurements taken on a microwave model when dipole, bow-tie, log-periodic, and log-spiral antennas are used as the integrated feed elements.

Structured background grids for generation of unstructured grids by advancing front method

A new method of background grid construction is introduced for generation of unstructured tetrahedral grids using the advancing-front technique. Unlike the conventional triangular/tetrahedral background grids which are difficult to construct and usually inadequate in performance, the new method exploits the simplicity of uniform Cartesian meshes and provides grids of better quality. The approach is analogous to solving a steady-state heat conduction problem with discrete heat sources. The spacing parameters of grid points are distributed over the nodes of a Cartesian background grid by interpolating from a few prescribed sources and solving a Poisson equation. To increase the control over the grid point distribution, a directional clustering approach is used. The new method is convenient to use and provides better grid quality and flexibility. Sample results are presented to demonstrate the power of the method.

Growth of III-V films by control of MBE growth front stoichiometry

For the growth of strain-layer materials and high quality single and multiple quantum wells, the instantaneous control of growth front stoichiometry is critical. The process of the invention adjusts the offset or phase of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) control shutters to program the instantaneous arrival or flux rate of In and As4 reactants to grow InAs. The interrupted growth of first In, then As4, is also a key feature.

Investigation of advancing front method for generating unstructured grid

The advancing front technique is used to generate an unstructured grid about simple aerodynamic geometries. Unstructured grids are generated using VGRID2D and VGRID3D software. Specific problems considered are a NACA 0012 airfoil, a bi-plane consisting of two NACA 0012 airfoil, a four element airfoil in its landing configuration, and an ONERA M6 wing. Inviscid time dependent solutions are computed on these geometries using USM3D and the results are compared with standard test results obtained by other investigators. A grid convergence study is conducted for the NACA 0012 airfoil and compared with a structured grid. A structured grid is generated using GRIDGEN software and inviscid solutions computed using CFL3D flow solver. The results obtained by unstructured grid for NACA 0012 airfoil showed an asymmetric distribution of flow quantities, and a fine distribution of grid was required to remove this asymmetry. On the other hand, the structured grid predicted a very symmetric distribution, but when the total number of points were compared to obtain the same results it was seen that structured grid required more grid points.

Shapes of strong shock fronts propagating through the coronal streamer belt

The effect of the coronal streamer belt on the propagation of a shock front in the solar wind is modeled. The model predicts a meridional deviation in the shock normal, resulting in a tendency for the shock normals to point toward the current sheet, which is straddled by the coronal streamer belt. Normals of eight shocks indpendently assessed to be within the expected range of influence of the belt are presented. Six of the eight shocks showed the predicted distortion. The null hypothesis would yield the same result in one out of 14 tries. The dimple shape induces a postshock confluence in the center of the belt of material pushed centerward from the top and bottom of the belt. It is suggested that this confluence of material might drive field line reconnection at the heliospheric current sheet in the center of the belt, as MHD simulations have observed.

An advancing front Delaunay triangulation algorithm designed for robustness

A new algorithm is described for generating an unstructured mesh about an arbitrary two-dimensional configuration. Mesh points are generated automatically by the algorithm in a manner which ensures a smooth variation of elements, and the resulting triangulation constitutes the Delaunay triangulation of these points. The algorithm combines the mathematical elegance and efficiency of Delaunay triangulation algorithms with the desirable point placement features, boundary integrity, and robustness traditionally associated with advancing-front-type mesh generation strategies. The method offers increased robustness over previous algorithms in that it cannot fail regardless of the initial boundary point distribution and the prescribed cell size distribution throughout the flow-field.
