Experiments in identification and control of flexible-link manipulators

A report is presented on an ongoing effort for end-point position control of flexible-link manipulators under realistic conditions in laboratory setups consisting of one- and two-link manipulators. The authors treat modeling, identification, and control of flexible-link manipulators that are required to carry payloads, possibly unknown and varying, while undergoing disturbance effects from the environments and the workspace. The various identification and control techniques being investigated are summarized, with emphasis on the ability of the controller to adjust to changes in dynamics, payload, and working environment. It is found that time-domain methods offer identified model structures that are readily available for control design, whereas frequency-domain methods, particularly the time-varying transfer function estimation approach developed for this application, are more desirable when rapid controller tuning is required.

Tailoring of composite links for optimal damped elasto-dynamic performance

A method is developed for the optimal design of composite links based on dynamic performance criteria directly related to structural modal damping and dynamic stiffness. An integrated mechanics theory correlates structural composite damping to the parameters of basic composite material systems, laminate parameters, link shape, and modal deformations. The inclusion of modal properties allows the selective minimization of vibrations associated with specific modes. Ply angles and fiber volumes are tailored to obtain optimal combinations of damping and stiffness. Applications to simple composite links indicate wide margins for trade-offs and illustrate the importance of various design variables to the optimal design.

Data link communications in the National Airspace System

In the near future, conventional radio communications, currently the primary medium for the transfer of information between aircraft and ground stations, will be replaced by digital data link. This paper briefly describes this technology and summarizes what are believed to be the principal human factor issues associated with data link implementation in the airspace system. Integration of data link communications with existing systems on the flight deck and in the Air Traffic Control system is discussed with regard for both near term implementation and longer term operational issues.

High-speed digital fiber optic links for satellite traffic

Large aperture phased array antennas operating at millimeter wave frequencies are designed for space-based communications and imaging platforms. Array elements are comprised of active T/R modules which are linked to the central processing unit through high-speed fiber-optic networks. The system architecture satisfying system requirements at millimeter wave frequency is T/R level data mixing where data and frequency reference signals are distributed independently before mixing at the T/R modules. This paper demonstrates design procedures of a low loss high-speed fiber-optic link used for transmission of data signals over 600-900 MHz bandwidth inside satellite. The fiber-optic link is characterized for transmission of analog and digital data. A dynamic range of 79 dB/MHz was measured for analog data over the bandwidth. On the other hand, for bursted SMSK satellite traffic at 220 Mbps rates, BER of 2 x 10 to the -7th was measured for E(b)/N(o) of 14.3 dB.

On dynamics and control of multi-link flexible space manipulators

In this paper dynamics, inverse dynamics, and control problems for multi-link flexible space manipulators are presented. In deriving the flexible manipulator dynamics the following are assumed: flexible deformations are relatively small; angular rates of the links are much smaller than their fundamental frequencies; nonlinear terms (centrifugal and Coriolis forces) in the flexible manipulator model are the same as those in the rigid body model. These assumptions are reasonable for large space manipulators, such as the space crane. Flexible displacements are measured with respect to the rigid body configuration, for which a linear time-varying system is obtained. The inverse dynamics problem consists of determination of joint torques, given tip trajectory, such that joint angles in flexible configuration are equal to the angles in the rigid body configuration. The manipulator control system consists of the feedforward compensation and feedback control loops. Simulation results of a two-link space crane with large payload show that the performance of this linearized dynamics and control approach is reasonable and robust subject to parameter variations during slew operations.

NASA transport systems research vehicle B-737 data link system and display formats

A data link system was designed to support flight tests in the NASA Transport Systems Research Vehicle B-737 airplane. The purpose of the flight tests was to evaluate pilot acceptance of using data link as the primary source of communications for strategic and tactical air traffic control clearances, weather information, and company messages. The airborne functional operations of the data link system flight tested in 1990 are described.

Flight tests show potential benefits of data link as primary communication medium

Message exchange for air traffic control (ATC) purposes via data link offers the potential benefits of increasing the airspace system safety and efficiency. This is accomplished by reducing communication errors and relieving the overloaded ATC radio frequencies, which hamper efficient message exchanges during peak traffic periods in many busy terminal areas. However, the many uses and advantages of data link create additional questions concerning the interface among the human-users and the cockpit and ground systems. A flight test was conducted in the NASA Langley B-737 airplane to contrast flight operations using current voice communications with the use of data link for transmitting both strategic and tactical ATC clearances during a typical commercial airline flight from takeoff to landing. Commercial airplane pilots were used as test subjects.

Flight deck benefits of integrated data link communication

A fixed-base, piloted simulation study was conducted to determine the operational benefits that result when air traffic control (ATC) instructions are transmitted to the deck of a transport aircraft over a digital data link. The ATC instructions include altitude, airspeed, heading, radio frequency, and route assignment data. The interface between the flight deck and the data link was integrated with other subsystems of the airplane to facilitate data management. Data from the ATC instructions were distributed to the flight guidance and control system, the navigation system, and an automatically tuned communication radio. The co-pilot initiated the automation-assisted data distribution process. Digital communications and automated data distribution were compared with conventional voice radio communication and manual input of data into other subsystems of the simulated aircraft. Less time was required in the combined communication and data management process when data link ATC communication was integrated with the other subsystems. The test subjects, commercial airline pilots, provided favorable evaluations of both the digital communication and data management processes.

Electromechanical systems with transient high power response operating from a resonant AC link

The combination of an inherently robust asynchronous (induction) electrical machine with the rapid control of energy provided by a high frequency resonant AC link enables the efficient management of higher power levels with greater versatility. This could have a variety of applications from launch vehicles to all-electric automobiles. These types of systems utilize a machine which is operated by independent control of both the voltage and frequency. This is made possible by using an indirect field-oriented control method which allows instantaneous torque control in all four operating quadrants. Incorporating the AC link allows the converter in these systems to switch at the zero crossing of every half cycle of the AC waveform. This zero loss switching of the link allows rapid energy variations to be achieved without the usual frequency proportional switching loss. Several field-oriented control systems were developed by LeRC and General Dynamics Space Systems Division under contract to NASA. A description of a single motor, electromechanical actuation system is presented. Then, focus is on a conceptual design for an AC electric vehicle. This design incorporates an induction motor/generator together with a flywheel for peak energy storage. System operation and implications along with the associated circuitry are addressed. Such a system would greatly improve all-electric vehicle ranges over the Federal Urban Driving Cycle (FUD).

Identification and control for a manipulator with two flexible links

The authors investigate the effectiveness of an online identification scheme for tracking the modal frequencies of a two-link flexible mechanism executing large-angle movements and carrying an unknown payload. A decentralized, gain-scheduled, adaptive control scheme is employed in conjunction with the identification scheme in order to illustrate the feasibility of online controller adjustment for endpoint position control in terms of vibration suppression after large-angle movements. Motivation for adopting the autoregressive-moving-average-model perspective is based on the convenient representation for online controller tuning and on the assumption that flexibility dynamics, for small deflections after a nonlinear large-angle motion, exhibit linear behavior. Experimental results are presented for a two-link planar mechanism in which both links are very flexible.

Efficient control with an order (n) recursive inversion of the Jacobian for an n-link serial manipulator

A method is presented to order (n) recursively invert the Jacobian matrix for a serial n-link manipulator. By realizing that the Jacobian relationship involving accelerations is a special case for the forward dynamics problem, it is possible to obtain the Jacobian inverse by directly applying Rodriguez's (1987) recursive forward dynamics algorithm. In this technique, the n-link robot equation is formulated as a spatially recursive algorithm in the form of a filtering and smoothing problem. To compute the Jacobian inverse via this algorithm, the n-link manipulator is modeled with only a unit end-point mass and zero applied torques.

Operator assistant to support deep space network link monitor and control

Preparing the Deep Space Network (DSN) stations to support spacecraft missions (referred to as pre-cal, for pre-calibration) is currently an operator and time intensive activity. Operators are responsible for sending and monitoring several hundred operator directivities, messages, and warnings. Operator directives are used to configure and calibrate the various subsystems (antenna, receiver, etc.) necessary to establish a spacecraft link. Messages and warnings are issued by the subsystems upon completion of an operation, changes of status, or an anomalous condition. Some points of pre-cal are logically parallel. Significant time savings could be realized if the existing Link Monitor and Control system (LMC) could support the operator in exploiting the parallelism inherent in pre-cal activities. Currently, operators may work on the individual subsystems in parallel, however, the burden of monitoring these parallel operations resides solely with the operator. Messages, warnings, and directives are all presented as they are received; without being correlated to the event that triggered them. Pre-cal is essentially an overhead activity. During pre-cal, no mission is supported, and no other activity can be performed using the equipment in the link. Therefore, it is highly desirable to reduce pre-cal time as much as possible. One approach to do this, as well as to increase efficiency and reduce errors, is the LMC Operator Assistant (OA). The LMC OA prototype demonstrates an architecture which can be used in concert with the existing LMC to exploit parallelism in pre-cal operations while providing the operators with a true monitoring capability, situational awareness and positive control. This paper presents an overview of the LMC OA architecture and the results from initial prototyping and test activities.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of a Plain Aileron with Various Trailing-Edge Modifications on a Tapered Wing III : Ailerons with Simple and Spring-Linked Balancing Tabs

Aerodynamics data are obtained for the design of linked balancing tabs and effect of varied tab span and location to produce suitable lateral control characteristics with reasonable stick pressures for high-speed aircraft. Simple and spring-linked balancing tabs may considerably reduce control pressures if aileron system is designed for low maximum aileron deflection. Spring-linked tabs also decrease variation of stick pressure with speed and impart better controlllability at low speeds.

Approximate minimum-time trajectories for two-link flexible manipulators

The method of recursive quadratic programming was used to generate approximate minimum-time tip trajectories for two-link semi-rigid and flexible manipulator movements in the horizontal plane. The manipulator is modeled with an efficient finite-element scheme for an n-link, m-joint system with bending only in the horizontal plane. Constraints on the trajectory include boundary conditions on position and energy for a rest-to-rest maneuver, straight-line tracking between boundary positions, and motor torque limits. Trajectory comparisons utilize a change in the link stiffness to compare a semi-rigid configuration to a flexible one. The level of bending flexibility necessary to excite significant modal behavior is demonstrated. Applied torques for minimum-time maneuvers are shown to be very similar between configurations and retain much of the qualitative character of rigid-body slewing motion.
