SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego User Manual (V.5.10)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

SIERRA/Aero Theory Manual - V.5.10

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.

Impact of Increased Latent Generations on Sensitivity Calculations with SCALE [Slides]

Depending on the system, energy, and/or nuclide, altering the number of latent generations can significantly impact generated sensitivity coefficients. In general, as the number of latent generations increases, the accuracy of the generated sensitivity value compared with the DP value increases and there is a significant increase in the uncertainty with generated sensitivity values. IFP generated sensitivities appear to be more stable than those with CLUTCH. Complex systems, even with IFP and increased latent generations can still produce poor results (i.e., MPC- 32). This reiterates the importance of performing DPs to confirm sensitivities. IFP-Shift and CLUTCH can take advantage of parallel computing abilities. Work continues in this area as additional parameters and calculational methods are examined to provide analysts insights to successfully generating sensitivity coefficients for confirmatory analyses and validation efforts.

Laser-Induced Ultrafast Demagnetization and Spin Switching (Final Report)

The information technology revolution demands bigger and faster magnetic storage devices. The funded research focuses on a new frontier - Laser-induced ultrafast all-optical spin switching (AOS), where a single laser pulse can switch spins from one direction to another permanently, without a magnetic field, on a time scale of 1-10 picoseconds, 2-3 orders of magnitude faster than the existing technology. The funded research has successfully resolved a long-standing issue in ultrafast demagnetization whether the lattice contributes to the demagnetization. We developed a high level first-principles theory and employed a massively parallel computer to pin down the details of the physical mechanisms that are inaccessible to other methods. This unique feature allows us to compute the force on each atom in both bulk and monolayer systems. We find that it is indeed true there is a nonzero force on each atom, but the idea of vibration contribution is not crucial to our basic understanding of physics. This paves the way to future experimental, theoretical and technological developments.

How is statistical thinking useful for evaluating foundation models?

Good’s statement appears to be rather prescient – while humanity has marched on through to the 21st century, modern artificial intelligence (AI), driven by a menagerie of immense deep-neural-network architectures aided with parallel computation, seems positioned to change life as we know it. It would be an understatement to say that the world has been captivated by AI. Recent engineering feats, such as autonomous vehicles and generative AI, have gripped the public sphere, and AI is poised to disrupt a host of industries – including software, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, manufacturing, entertainment, and a slew of others; indeed, one is hard pressed to find any industry that does not claim to bear an impact from the so-called AI revolution.

Testing Job Submission to FermiGrid via Dask on the Fermilab Elastic Analysis Facility

Over the course of a summer internship, Jobsub Lite task submission and Dask operations were tested in development and production EAF at Fermilab, first via terminal and subsequently via Jupyter notebook cell. Testing allowed for development of a script available to EAF users that expands and makes easier access to parallel computing resources at Fermilab and associated sites.

Coupling hydrodynamics to a rigid-body motion solver for fluid-structure interaction [Slides]

Quinoa is a massively parallel computational fluid dynamics with multi-material and programmed burn capabilities developed from Programmatic and LDRD funds. Overset is a well-established method of using an “inset” mesh that communicates with a background mesh. Solutions transfer freely from one to another and operate as boundary conditions on the opposite mesh. Either mesh can move at specified velocity! This project couples the existing Mesh-to-mesh transfer with Quinoa and demonstrates use of resulting Overset solver in computational simulation of blast effects on a re-entry body for survivability assessments.

UPC++ v1.0 Programmer’s Guide (Rev. 2023.9.0)

UPC++ is a C++ library that supports Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming. It is designed for writing efficient, scalable parallel programs on distributed-memory parallel computers. The key communication facilities in UPC++ are one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). The UPC++ control model is single program, multiple-data (SPMD), with each separate constituent process having access to local memory as it would in C++. The PGAS memory model additionally provides one-sided RMA communication to a global address space, which is allocated in shared segments that are distributed over the processes. UPC++ also features Remote Procedure Call (RPC) communication, making it easy to move computation to operate on data that resides on remote processes. UPC++ was designed to support exascale high-performance computing, and the library interfaces and implementation are focused on maximizing scalability. In UPC++, all communication operations are syntactically explicit, which encourages programmers to consider the costs associated with communication and data movement. Moreover, all communication operations are asynchronous by default, encouraging programmers to seek opportunities for overlapping communication latencies with other useful work. UPC++ provides expressive and composable abstractions designed for efficiently managing aggressive use of asynchrony in programs. Together, these design principles are intended to enable programmers to write applications using UPC++ that perform well even on hundreds of thousands of cores.

Sierra/Solid Mechanics 5.16 User's Guide

Sierra/SolidMechanics (Sierra/SM) is a Lagrangian, three-dimensional code for finite element analysis of solids and structures. It provides capabilities for explicit dynamic, implicit quasistatic and dynamic analyses. The explicit dynamics capabilities allow for the efficient and robust solution of models with extensive contact subjected to large, suddenly applied loads. For implicit problems, Sierra/SM uses a multi-level iterative solver, which enables it to effectively solve problems with large deformations, nonlinear material behavior, and contact. Sierra/SM has a versatile library of continuum and structural elements, and a large library of material models. The code is written for parallel computing environments enabling scalable solutions of extremely large problems for both implicit and explicit analyses. It is built on the SIERRA Framework, which facilitates coupling with other SIERRA mechanics codes. This document describes the functionality and input syntax for Sierra/SM.

LHC Event Generation in the Exascale Era

MCFM is a dedicated Monte-Carlo simulation program for collider phenomenology at highest energies. Designed during the Tevatron era, it has successfully incorporated the latest developments needed for LHC precision calculations and remained on the forefront of collider phenomenology. The Fortran code includes interfaces to modern PDF and loop reduction libraries but has been unchanged structurally compared to the earlier versions. Parallel computing has been enabled using OpenMP and MPI. MCFM provides numerically highly stable one-loop amplitudes and superior phase-space efficiency, leading to excellent performance in NXLO calculations using jettiness or qT subtraction techniques for IR regularization.
