Record Efficiency InGaAs Thermophotovoltaic Cells For Energy Storage Applications

Utility-scale energy storage is a significant technical challenge and a key barrier to widespread adoption of renewable energy. An efficient, modular, and scalable solution can be achieved by storing energy in the form of high-temperature heat and then extracting energy, on demand, using thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cells to convert the heat back to electricity. The ideal thermal emitter temperature is determined by balancing the desire for higher power densities, high-temperature compliant materials, and efficient, cost-effective thermophotovoltaic cells, among other considerations. 0.74-eV InGaAs lattice-matched to InP is a good choice for a cell absorber, and here we describe our development of InGaAs TPV cells with efficiencies of 38.8% from an ~1850 degrees celsius source temperature. This is the highest efficiency yet measured and reported for a single-junction TPV device. This efficiency was achieved by carefully quantifying and then reducing the parasitic absorption in the semiconductor layers, and by significantly reducing the series resistance to minimize the power loss.

Building the Case for Hybrid Energy Developments: Webinar Recording Day 1

INL, PNNL, and NREL, with support from our academic and industry partners, hosted a 2-day webinar to learn more about the benefits of hybrid energy systems, considerations for designing the right system for communities, and practical tools that can help with the design and development process. In Day 1 of this webinar, the focus was on why users might want to consider hybrid energy systems, and frameworks that could help inform design decisions for hybrid systems, including a valuation framework, resilience framework, and hybrid system design optimization framework.

Memory row recording for mitigating crosstalk in dynamic random access memory

A method includes adding a set of one or more victim rows to a first probabilistic filter and to a second probabilistic filter, in response to a memory access request, identifying a candidate victim row adjacent to a memory address specified by a memory access request, identifying the candidate victim row as a victim row in the set of victim rows based on performing a lookup of the candidate victim row in a selected filter, where the selected filter includes one of the first probabilistic filter and the second probabilistic filter, in response to identifying the candidate row as the victim row, enabling a row hammering countermeasure, clearing the first probabilistic filter in each of a first set of time periods, and clearing the second probabilistic filter in each of a second set of time periods interleaved with the first set of time periods.

Implantable neuromodulation system for closed-loop stimulation and recording simultaneously at multiple brain sets

The present disclosure relates to a modular system for deep brain stimulation (DBS) and electrocorticography (ECoG). The system may have an implantable neuromodulator for generating electrical stimulation signals adapted to be applied to a desired region of a brain via an attached electrode array. An aggregator module may be used for collecting and aggregating electrical signals and transmitting the electrical signals to the neuromodulator. A control module may be used which is in communication with the aggregator module for controlling generation of the electrical signals and transmitting the electrical signals to the aggregator.

AMIA KDDM Working Group Collaborative Workshop: Enriching Electronic Health Records with Social Determinants of Health to Improve Outcomes and Health Equity

Prior research has demonstrated that social determinants of health (SDoH) are major drivers of health outcomes and contributors to widespread health inequities. It was estimated that, in the United States, SDoH could be responsible for up to 40% of all preventable deaths, significantly higher than the 10-15% for which better medical care is responsible. Public health interventions that target SDoH are instrumental for improving health outcomes and reducing long-standing health inequities. Currently, most mainstream EHR vendors have implemented SDoH screeners in their EHR systems. However, the utility of the screeners is low, rendering patient-level SDoH still widely unavailable in the structured fields. SDoH are sometimes mentioned in free-text clinical notes (e.g., social context section) where natural language processing (NLP) can be applied to extract relevant information. Contextual-level SDoH can be identified from multiple data sources, many of which are publicly available and spatiotemporally linked to EHR data. As such, there is an opportunity for the KDDM research community to create innovative solutions to draw meaningful insights by creating and using rich data with SDoH to improve health outcomes while reducing disparities. In this workshop organized by AMIA Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Working Group (AMIA KDDM WG), we will invite world-leading experts from academia, national laboratories, and life science industry with varied backgrounds in biomedical informatics, epidemiology, data science, machine learning, natural language processing, and pediatric cardiology to discuss the best practice of capturing, standardizing, and using SDoH information in various applications aiming at improving outcomes and health equity.
