Measurement of relative cross sections for simultaneous ionization and excitation of the helium 4 2s and 4 2p states

The relative cross sections for simultaneous ionization and excitation of helium by 200-eV electrons into the 4 2s and 4 2p states were measured via a fast delayed coincidence technique. Results show good agreement with the relative cross sections for single electron excitation of helium and hydrogen. An application of the results of the measurement to the development of ultraviolet intensity standard is suggested. This technique involves the use of known branching ratios, a visible light flux reference, and the measured relative cross sections.

ATS simultaneous and turnaround ranging experiments

This report explains the data reduction and spacecraft position determination used in conjunction with two ATS experiments - Trilateration and Turnaround Ranging - and describes in detail a multilateration program that is used for part of the data reduction process. The process described is for the determination of the inertial position of the satellite, and for formating input for related programs. In the trilateration procedure, a geometric determination of satellite position is made from near simultaneous range measurements made by three different tracking stations. Turnaround ranging involves two stations; one, the master station, transmits the signal to the satellite and the satellite retransmits the signal to the slave station which turns the signal around to the satellite which in turn retransmits the signal to the master station. The results of the satellite position computations using the multilateration program are compared to results of other position determination programs used at Goddard. All programs give nearly the same results which indicates that because of its simplicity and computational speed the trilateration technique is useful in obtaining spacecraft positions for near synchronous satellites.

Comparison of very-low-frequency auroral hiss with precipitating low-energy electrons by the use of simultaneous data from two Ogo 4 experiments.

Determination of the origin of auroral hiss by comparing the records of a vlf experiment (0.3 to 18 kHz) with simultaneous data obtained by an auroral-particle experiment having detectors for precipitating electrons at 0.7, 2.3, and 7.3 keV. It is found that, on the dayside of the earth, the occurrence of vlf hiss correlates well with precipitation events at 0.7 keV, but in general very poorly with activity in the higher-energy channels. Exact correlation between variations in vlf hiss intensity and in electron fluxes is rare even at 0.7 keV. In addition, vlf hiss tends to be observed over a somewhat larger spatial region than precipitating 0.7-keV electrons. It is concluded that, on the dayside, auroral hiss is generated by soft (E less than 1 keV) 'cusp region' electrons and that the lack of detailed correlation between the two phenomena is caused by propagation effects as the hiss travels downward and spreads from the generation region.

Simultaneous satellite and riometer measurements of particles during solar cosmic ray events.

The expected 30 and 50 MHz riometer absorptions have been calculated for three events in 1969 using data from the MDAC-W charged particle experiment on OGO 6. Several times during each event, the satellite passed over the MDAC-W Arctic and Antarctic Geophysical Observatories. The calculated total absorption (using 2 minute averages of the data) agrees well with the measured absorption for the overpasses. The alpha particle and electron contributions usually amount to less than a few percent of the proton absorption. During the large November 2, 1969 event, however, the electrons produced the major part of the absorption up to the peak and a significant contribution during virtually its entire duration. With the two frequencies for which simultaneous riometer data were taken, it is possible to detect the softening of the particle spectra during the events, and the relative hardness differences between events.

Method of simultaneous measurement of radiative and lattice thermal conductivity.

A new technique of high-temperature thermal-conductivity measurement is described. A CO2 gas laser is used to generate a low-frequency temperature wave at one face of a small disk-shaped sample, and an infrared detector views the opposite face to detect the phase of the emerging radiation. A mathematical expression is derived which enables phase data at several frequencies to be used for the simultaneous determination of thermal diffusivity and mean extinction coefficient. Lattice and radiative thermal conductivities are then calculated. Test results for sintered aluminum oxide at temperatures from 530 to 1924 K are within the range of error of previously existing data.

Laser velocimeter for simultaneous two-dimensional velocity measurements

Laser velocimeter provides simultaneous orthogonal measurements in manner which minimizes many problems attending prior systems, and allows spatial traversing of flowfield in order to obtain velocity profiles. Velocimeter permits rapid interrogation of unsteady flows where area of interest is of the order of one meter in extent and flow does not vary appreciably over time of about one second.

Amplitude fading of simultaneous transionospheric L-band and VHF signals received at the geomagnetic equator

At Ancon, Peru, simultaneous observations of 1550-MHz and 136-MHz signals from the ATS 5 and Intelsat-1 spacecraft showed ionospheric fading as great as 27 db at 136 MHz and 6 db at 1550 MHZ. The observations were made on 48 days during the 1970 autumnal and 1971 vernal equinox periods. Comparison of the two frequencies, in respect to rates and depths of fades, is made. Statistical distributions of the received signal levels during ionospheric scintillation occurrences are presented which may be of use to communications system engineers with operational requirements in the equatorial regions. The distributions show that during expected periods of scintillation, the L band signal typically falls 1.1 db below the median for 1.0 percent of the time, and the VHF signal falls 11.5 db below the median for 1.0 percent of the time.

Analysis procedure for television observations and simultaneous observations

The procedures used in the analysis of television and simultaneous observations are described. Starting with the right ascension and declination of the meteor, the celestrial triangle formed by Sidell and the meteor is solved, and the epochs of the beginning and end of the meteor observation as recorded on the video tape are determined.

The simultaneous quantitation of ten amino acids in soil extracts by mass fragmentography

A specific and sensitive method for the identification and simultaneous quantitation by mass fragmentography of ten of the amino acids present in soil was developed. The technique uses a computer driven quadrupole mass spectrometer and a commercial preparation of deuterated amino acids is used as internal standards for purposes of quantitation. The results obtained are comparable with those from an amino acid analyzer. In the quadrupole mass spectrometer-computer system up to 25 pre-selected ions may be monitored sequentially. This allows a maximum of 12 different amino acids (one specific ion in each of the undeuterated and deuterated amino acid spectra) to be quantitated. The method is relatively rapid (analysis time of approximately one hour) and is capable of the quantitation of nanogram quantities of amino acids.

Simultaneous L-band and VHF ionospheric fading effects at the geomagnetic equator

Simultaneous observations of ionspheric fading of 1550 MHz and 136 MHz radio waves from the ATS-5 spacecraft were recorded on the geomagnetic equator at Ancon, Peru. The observations were made during a period around the 1971 spring equinox; they show fades as great as 27 db at 136 MHz, and 6 db at 1550 MHz. The general characteristics of the scintillation signatures at the two frequencies are discussed with emphasis on comparison of the two frequencies with respect to rates and depths of fades. Typical statistical distributions of signal levels are also presented from which time availabilities of the signals relative to the median levels can be derived.

Simultaneous particle and field observations of field-aligned currents

Simultaneous measurements of low energy precipitating electrons and magnetic fluctuations from the low altitude polar orbiting satellite OGO-4 have been compared. Analysis of the two sets of experimental data for isolated events led to the classification of high latitude field-aligned currents as purely temporal or purely spatial variations. Magnetic field disturbances calculated using these simple current models and the measured particle fluxes were in good agreement with measured field values. While fluxes of greater than 1 keV electrons are detected primarily on the nightside, magnetometer disturbances indicative of field-aligned currents were seen at all local times, both in the visual auroral regions and dayside polar cusp. Thus electrons with energies less than approximately 1 keV are the prime charge carriers in high latitude dayside field-aligned currents. The satellite measurements are in good agreement with previously measured field-aligned current values and with values predicted from several models involving magnetospheric field-aligned currents.

Dual purpose optical instrument capable of simultaneously acting as spectrometer and diffractometer

A dual purpose optical instrument is described capable of simultaneously acting as a spectrometer and diffractometer to respectively perform elemental and structural analysis of an unknown sample. The diffractometer portion of the instrument employs a modified form of Seeman-Bohlin focusing which involves providing a line source of X-rays, a sample, and a detector, all on the same focal circle. The spectrometer portion of the instrument employs a fixedly mounted X-ray energy detector mounted outside of the plane of the focal circle.

Simultaneous measurements of radar reflectivity and refractive index spectra in clear air convection.

Simultaneous measurements of radar reflectivity and radio refractive index at several altitudes in clear air convection have been made. The experimental data were compared with the theoretical relationship which relates the reflectivity to the refractivity spectrum. The agreement between the measurements and the theory is excellent and shows that the radar returns in clear air are the result of, and can be quantitatively described as being from, fine-scale refractivity fluctuations due to turbulent mixing. Further, the data give strong support to the -5/3 spectral decay of the refractivity spectrum in the inertial subrange.

Simultaneous electric-field measurements on nearby balloons.

Electric-field payloads were flown simultaneously on two balloons from Great Whale River, Canada, on September 21, 1971, to provide data at two points in the upper atmosphere that differed in altitude by more than one atmospheric density scale height and in horizontal position by 30-140 km. The altitude dependences in the two sets of data prove conclusively that the vertical electric field at balloon altitudes stems from fair-weather atmospheric electricity sources and that the horizontal fields are mapped down ionospheric fields, since the weather-associated horizontal fields were smaller than 2 mV/m.
