What Made Apollo A Success?

Spacecraft development, mission design planning, flight crew operations, and flight operations are considered. Spacecraft design principles and test activities are described. Determination of the best series of flights leading to a lunar landing at the earliest possible time, flight planning, techniques for establishing flight procedures and carrying out flight operations, and crew training and simulation activities are discussed.

Two successful geomagnetic-field-line tracing experiments.

Two field-line tracing experiments were conducted on an L = 1.26 magnetic flux tube over Kauai, Hawaii. Barium vapor was created by the detonation of a highly explosive shaped charge aligned with the geomagnetic field at a 467-km altitude. Barium ions traveled along the field line to the conjugate ionosphere in a tube 3 to 5 km in diameter, producing a visible streak along the entire 6900-km path length. Electric fields perpendicular to the magnetic field caused the ions to drift away from the true conjugate during transit, but extrapolation from subsequent ion drift rates allowed the conjugate to be identified and compared with several field models. Differing ion drift rates and directions at the conjugate points indicated that the electric field is not transferred unattenuated along field lines.

Fluid undercutting in the successive channel flow of two gases.

A fluid piston technique wherein one gas displaces another gas from a horizontal channel was investigated experimentally in a laboratory simulation of the operating concept of a Mach number 9, true-energy wind tunnel. Tests were conducted over a Froude number range from 0.0015 to 0.543 at driver-to-driven gas density ratios from 0.637 to 11.0 to find the effect of fluid undercutting (or overcutting) on test duration. Other variables studied, either experimentally or analytically, include channel cross-sectional shape, channel inlet design, channel length-to-diameter ratio, Reynolds number, pretest pressurization, and channel inclination angle. Results from shadowgraph movies and pressure measurements provide a correlation of actual-to-ideal test durations for a wide range of Froude numbers and gas density ratios and indicate that the application of the fluid piston technique to the wind-tunnel concept is feasible. However, severe fluid undercutting (or overcutting) in horizontal channels occurs at lower Froude numbers and at density ratios significantly different from unity.

Heliobiology, its development, successes and tasks

Heliobiology studies the influence of changes in solar activity on life. Considered are the influence of periodic solar activity on the development and growth of epidemics, mortality from various diseases, the functional activity of the nervous system, the development of psychic disturbances, the details of the development of microorganisms and many other phenomena in the living world.

Project management - Factors leading to success or failure

This paper presents initial findings of a study designed to detail the relationships among situational, structural, and process variables as they relate to project effectiveness. In the paper, emphasis is placed on delineating those variables which tend to improve and those which tend to impede project effectiveness.
