Magnetic disturbances in the vicinity of synchronous orbit and the substorm current wedge - A case study

It is pointed out that magnetospheric substorms have been referred to as the 'fundamental instability' of the magnetosphere which results from coupling between the solar wind and the earth's magnetic and plasma environment. The present paper is mainly concerned with magnetic observations made by the midlatitude Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL) Magnetometer Network, the GOES 2 and 3 synchronous satellites, and the near-geosynchronous P78-2 Spacecraft Charging at High Altitudes (SCATHA) satellite. Ground-based Pi 2 and magnetic bay observations are used to detect a clear substorm onset. An idealized model of the substorm current system is utilized to relate the observations to the spatial location and temporal development of the substorm disturbance near synchronous orbit.

Can cometary bombardment disrupt synchronous rotation of planetary satellites?

The distribution of craters on Jupiter's Galilean satellites Ganymede and Callisto and on Saturn's midsized airless moons is much more symmetric and uniform than theoretical analysis predicts. A number of explanations for this situation have been considered, taking into account also the possibility that impacts due to cometary bombardment might disrupt the synchronous rotation of the moons. The feasibility of such a disruption is explored in the present study. The results of this study are presented in a table. It is found that a disruption of the synchronous rotation of the considered moons by impacts is very unlikely.

Stellar activity in synchronized binaries. I - Dependence on rotation

A large sample of late-type binaries with orbital periods from 1 to 100 days has been examined for relationships between stellar activity and rotation period (assumed - with a few exceptions - to be synchronized with the stellar orbital period). Most of the systems are in the RS Canum Venaticorum class of close binaries; none are contact binaries. The activity diagnostics were observed with the IUE and the Einstein Observatory and range from the mid-chromosphere to the corona. There is a dependence of activity on rotation in the synchronized binaries; surface flux is the preferable measure of activity and is best when steps are taken to remove variations in activity filling factors.

A synchronous fiber optic ring local area network for multigigabit/s mixed-traffic communication

A synchronous-ring fiber optic local area network is reported that facilitates the simultaneous transmission of packet and real-time traffic at gigabit/s rates, minimizes the amount of high-speed logic, and simplifies the user interface to the network. The novelty of the technique is based on (1) suspending in transit around the ring's circumference an integral number of data frames and (2) achieving this condition by skewing the frame clock rate a small amount. Rather than use the whole data frame as one packet destined to a specific user, many individual channels are instead time-multiplexed into the data frame. This technique only becomes feasible for local networks as data rates approach the Gbit/s range. This departure from other synchronous rings results in several advantages both in terms of system performance and hardware simplicity.

Clock synchronization by accelerated observers - Metric construction for arbitrary congruences of world lines

Clock synchronization in an arbitrarily accelerated observer congruence is considered. A general solution is obtained that maintains the isotropy and coordinate independence of the one-way speed of light. Attention is also given to various particular cases including, rotating disk congruence or ring congruence. An explicit, congruence-based spacetime metric is constructed according to Einstein's clock synchronization procedure and the equation for the geodesics of the space-time was derived using Hamilton-Jacobi method. The application of interferometric techniques (absolute phase radio interferometry, VLBI) to the detection of the 'global Sagnac effect' is also discussed.

Observations of ion cyclotron waves near synchronous orbit and on the ground

Ion cyclotron waves (ICWs) generated in the magnetosphere by the ion cyclotron instability of 10-100 keV protons are now known to be the origin of short-period (0.1-5 Hz) electromagnetic field oscillations observed by synchronous spacecraft and on the earth's surface. Observations of the various wave characteristics, including spectral and polarization properties, that lead to the identification of generation and propagation mechaniisms, and regions in the magnetosphere are described with reference to ATS-6, GEOS, and ground-based wave data and interpreted using cold plasma propagation theory. The presence of heavy ions (O/+/, He/+/) dramatically modifies ICW magnetospheric propagation characteristics giving rise to spectral slots and polarization reversals. These properties may be used in plasma diagnostics. Finally satellite-ground correlations and techniques for determining the magnetospheric source position of ICWs not seen at synchronous orbit but observed on the ground as structured Pc1 pulsations are considered.

Experience with synchronous and asynchronous digital control systems

Flight control systems have undergone a revolution since the days of simple mechanical linkages; presently the most advanced systems are full-authority, full-time digital systems controlling unstable aircraft. With the use of advanced control systems, the aerodynamic design can incorporate features that allow greater performance and fuel savings, as can be seen on the new Airbus design and advanced tactical fighter concepts. These advanced aircraft will be and are relying on the flight control system to provide the stability and handling qualities required for safe flight and to allow the pilot to control the aircraft. Various design philosophies have been proposed and followed to investigate system architectures for these advanced flight control systems. One major area of discussion is whether a multichannel digital control system should be synchronous or asynchronous. This paper addressed the flight experience at the Dryden Flight Research Facility of NASA's Ames Research Center with both synchronous and asynchronous digital flight control systems. Four different flight control systems are evaluated against criteria such as software reliability, cost increases, and schedule delays.

Word and frame synchronization with verification for PPM optical communications

A method for obtaining word and frame synchronization in pulse position modulated optical communication systems is described. The method uses a short sync sequence inserted at the beginning of each data frame and a verification procedure to distinguish between inserted and randomly occurring sequences at the receiver. This results in an easy to implement sync system which provides reliable synchronization even at high symbol error rates. Results are given for the application of this approach to a highly energy efficient 256-ary PPM test system.

Motion synchronization of a mechanism to deploy and restow a truss beam

The functions of the Control of Flexible Structures I (COFS I) deployer and retractor assembly (DRA) are primarily to deploy and retract the Mast I beam, and secondarily to latch, unlatch, and restow the DRA mechanism. The problems associated with the diagonal folding mechanism that retracts the beam is presented, the synchronization requirements critical to the process of restowing the beam is discussed, and a proposed solution to the problem of synchronization between the mechanical systems is presented. In addition, a detailed description is presented of the design and functioning of the DRA.

Fault-tolerant clock synchronization validation methodology

A validation method for the synchronization subsystem of a fault-tolerant computer system is presented. The high reliability requirement of flight-crucial systems precludes the use of most traditional validation methods. The method presented utilizes formal design proof to uncover design and coding errors and experimentation to validate the assumptions of the design proof. The experimental method is described and illustrated by validating the clock synchronization system of the Software Implemented Fault Tolerance computer. The design proof of the algorithm includes a theorem that defines the maximum skew between any two nonfaulty clocks in the system in terms of specific system parameters. Most of these parameters are deterministic. One crucial parameter is the upper bound on the clock read error, which is stochastic. The probability that this upper bound is exceeded is calculated from data obtained by the measurement of system parameters. This probability is then included in a detailed reliability analysis of the system.

Measuring moment-to-moment pilot workload using synchronous presentations of secondary tasks in a motion-base trainer

A simulation was conducted to determine whether the sensitivity of secondary task measures of pilot workload could be improved by synchronizing their presentation to the occurrence of specific events or pilot actions. This synchronous method of presentation was compared to the more typical asynchronous method, where secondary task presentations are independent of pilot's flight-related activities. Twelve pilots flew low- and high-difficulty scenarios in a motion-base trainer with and without concurrent secondary tasks (e.g., choice reaction time and time production). The difficulty of each scenario was manipulated by the addition of 21 flight-related tasks superimposed on a standard approach and landing sequence. The insertion of the secondary tasks did not affect primary flight performance. However, secondary task performance did reflect workload differences between scenarios and among flight segments within scenarios, replicating the results of an earlier study in which the secondary tasks were presented asynchronously (Bortolussi et al., 1986).

Node synchronization of viterbi decoders using state metrics

The concept of node synchronization using state metrics is investigated. The branch metrics are integrated over a fixed time interval and the results are compared to the detection threshold. If the threshold is exceeded, the out-of-sync hypothesis is accepted; otherwise, the in-sync hypothesis is accepted. It is shown that the detection threshold can be chosen independent of any particular convolutional code with fixed code rate and constant length if the code has reasonably good bit error rate performance. Three node synchronization schemes are compared: (1) a scheme using the syndrome; (2) a scheme using the frame-sync patterns; and (3) a scheme using the state metrics. At very low signal to noise ratios (SNR), scheme 2 can be faster than scheme 1. For Voyager's rate 1/2 and constraint length 7 convolutional code, this happens for SNRs of less than 0.7 dB. This result is obtained by assuming that the code frame-sync pattern has good aperiodic autocorrelation properties. For a fixed false alarm probability, the sequential detection scheme based on the syndrome is faster than scheme 3 with fixed integration time. A sequential detection technique is needed to improve the speed of scheme 3.

Analysis of FDDI synchronous traffic delays

The Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) high-speed token-ring protocol provides support for two classes of service: synchronous, to support applications which require deterministic access to the channel, and asynchronous, to support applications which do not have such stringent response-time requirements. The purpose of this paper is to determine how to set ring parameters to support synchronous traffic most efficiently. Both theoretical results and results obtained from a simulation study are presented.

Formal verification of a fault tolerant clock synchronization algorithm

A formal specification and mechanically assisted verification of the interactive convergence clock synchronization algorithm of Lamport and Melliar-Smith is described. Several technical flaws in the analysis given by Lamport and Melliar-Smith were discovered, even though their presentation is unusally precise and detailed. It seems that these flaws were not detected by informal peer scrutiny. The flaws are discussed and a revised presentation of the analysis is given that not only corrects the flaws but is also more precise and easier to follow. Some of the corrections to the flaws require slight modifications to the original assumptions underlying the algorithm and to the constraints on its parameters, and thus change the external specifications of the algorithm. The formal analysis of the interactive convergence clock synchronization algorithm was performed using the Enhanced Hierarchical Development Methodology (EHDM) formal specification and verification environment. This application of EHDM provides a demonstration of some of the capabilities of the system.
