Mechanical property determination of high conductivity metals and alloys

Pertinent mechanical properties of three high conductivity metals and alloys; namely, vacuum hot pressed grade S-200E beryllium, OFHC copper and beryllium-copper alloy no. 10 were determined. These materials were selected based on their possible use in rocket thrust chamber and nozzle hardware. They were procured in a form and condition similar to that which might be ordered for actual hardware fabrication. The mechanical properties measured include (1) tension and compression stress strain curves at constant strain rate (2) tensile and compressive creep, (3) tensile and compressive stress-relaxation behavior and (4) elastic properties. Tests were conducted over the temperature range of from 75 F to 1600 F. The resulting data is presented in both graphical and tabular form.

Equilibrium concentrations of N2H4 and its decomposition products at elevated temperatures and pressures

Liquid hydrazine is considered as a convenient source of hydrogen rather than just as a rocket fuel. For such purposes, the hydrogen is usually obtained by passing the hydrazine through a heated catalytic bed. One convenient measure of the effectiveness of a catalytic decomposition device as a whole is to compare the quantity of hydrogen produced with the equilibrium concentration of the gaseous species N2H4, NH3, N3, and H2 which would exist at the temperature and pressure found in various parts of the device. Calculations of the concentrations were carried out and are reported here. Following presentation of the results in both tabular and graphical forms is a comparison between the computed equilibrium concentrations and available experimental data.

Correlations among the parameters of the spherical model for eclipsing binaries.

Correlation coefficients have been computed to investigate the parameters used to describe the spherical model of an eclipsing binary system. Regions in parameter hyperspace have been identified where strong correlations exist and, by implication, the solution determinacy is low. The results are presented in tabular form for a large number of system configurations.

Radiation hazards to synchronous satellites: The IUE (SAS-D) mission

The ambient trapped particle fluxes incident on the IUE (SAS-D) satellite were studied. Several synchronous elliptical and circular flight paths were evaluated and the effect of inclination, eccentricity, and parking longitude on vehicle encountered intensities was investigated. Temporal variations in the electron environment were considered and partially accounted for. Magnetic field calculations were performed with a current field model extrapolated to a later epoch with linear time terms. Orbital flux integrations were performed with the latest proton and electron environment models using new improved computational methods. The results are presented in graphical and tabular form; they are analyzed, explained, and discussed. Estimates of energetic solar proton fluxes are given for a one year mission at selected integral energies ranging from 10 to 100 MeV, calculated for a year of maximum solar activity during the next solar cycle.

Test report for 120-inch-diameter Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) model tests

The space shuttle solid rocket boosters (SRB's) will be jettisoned to impact in the ocean within a 200-mile radius of the launch site. Tests were conducted at Long Beach, California, using a 12-inch diameter Titan 3C model to simulate the full-scale characteristics of the prototype SRB during retrieval operations. The objectives of the towing tests were to investigate and assess the following: (1) a floating and towing characteristics of the SRB; (2) need for plugging the SRB nozzle prior to tow; (3) attach point locations on the SRB; (4) effects of varying the SRB configuration; (5) towing hardware; and (6) difficulty of attaching a tow line to the SRB in the open sea. The model was towed in various sea states using four different types and varying lengths of tow line at various speeds. Three attach point locations were tested. Test data was recorded on magnetic tape for the tow line loads and for model pitch, roll, and yaw characteristics and was reduced by computer to tabular printouts and X-Y plots. Profile and movie photography provided documentary test data.

Space radiation incident on SATS missions

A special orbital radiation study was conducted in order to evaluate mission encountered energetic particle fluxes. This information is to be supplied to the project subsystem engineers for their guidance in designing flight hardware to withstand the expected radiation levels. Flux calculations were performed for a set of 20 nominal trajectories placed at several altitudes and inclinations. Temporal variations in the ambient electron environment were considered and partially accounted for. Magnetic field calculations were performed with a current field model, extrapolated to the tentative SATS launch epoch with linear time terms. Orbital flux integrations ware performed with the latest proton and electron environment models, using new computational methods. The results are presented in graphical and tabular form. Estimates of energetic solar proton fluxes are given for a one year mission at selected integral energies ranging from 10 to 100 Mev, calculated for a year of maximum solar activity during the next solar cycle.

Experimental investigations of an 0.0405 scale Space Shuttle Configuration 3 orbiter to determine subsonic stability characteristics. Volume 1: OA21A

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted in a low speed wind tunnel from May 21 through June 4 and from June 18 through June 25, 1973 on a 0.0405 scale -139B model Space Shuttle Vehicle (SSV) orbiter. The purpose of the test was to investigate the longitudinal and lateral-directional subsonic aerodynamic characteristics of the proposed PRR Space Shuttle orbiter. Emphasis was placed on component buildup effects, elevon, rudder, body flaps, rudder flare effectiveness, and canard and speed brake development. Angles of attack from -4 deg. to 24 deg. and angles of sideslip of -10 deg. to 10 deg. were tested. Static pressures were recorded on the base. The aerodynamic force balance results are presented in plotted and tabular form.

A comment on towers for windmills

Design considerations for windmill tower structures include the effects of normal wind forces on the rotor and on the tower. Circular tabular or masonry towers present a relatively simple aerodynamic solution. Economic factors establish the tubular tower as superior for small and medium sized windmills. Concrete and standard concrete block designs are cheaper than refabricated steel structures that have to be freighted.

The tropospheric calibration model for Mariner Mars 1971

The effects of the troposphere on arrival time, range, and range rate measurement of radio signals propagating from spacecraft are examined. A tropospheric calibration model which takes into account seasonal variations, various elevations, and apparent location changes was developed. A comparison was made of the effects before and after calibration. Without calibration, a 16-m change in the distance off the spin axis, is induced for a 10-deg minimum elevation symmetrical pass. Even after calibration with the old model, the error in spin axis is still greater than 1 m. Calibration results and estimated uncertainties of the model are given in tabular form. Test results also show that the model met the required accuracy for the Mariner Mars 1971 mission.
