Lathe converted for grinding aspheric surfaces

A standard overarm tracing lathe converted by the addition of an independently driven diamond grinding wheel is used for grinding aspheric surfaces. The motion of the wheel is controlled by the lathe air tracer following the template which produces the desired aspheric profile.

Calibration standard for dynamic evaluation of a profile-plotter

Template is used for evaluation of the dynamic characteristics and accuracy of the plotter. It has a profile composed of surfaces parallel to and at known distances from a reference plane, plane, the diverse surfaces being connected by slopes of known angles and blended by cylindrical developments of known radii.

Circuit board hole coordinate locator concept

Fixed light source registers the x and y coordinates of holes in a fixed opaque template. A first surface parabolic mirror and a set of photocells are used to detect the passage of light through the individual holes.

A method for precision anodize stripping

Felt templates saturated with etch solution remove anodized finish from aluminum without damage to the surface. The solution is a combination of nitric acid, chromic acid, and hydrofluoric acid.

Universal router concept

Portable universal router can cut holes of large diameter and irregular shapes, machine recesses, and drill holes with certain edge-distance limitations. Rectangular and round holes may be cut without a template.

Inventory of forest and rangeland and detection of forest stress

The author has identified the following significant results. Seventy-two ground sensors were interfaced with three DCP'S at the Black Hills test site. Unfortunately, the transmitters had to be returned for modification and forestry sensed data is not available. The DCP's did operate properly from the Berkeley laboratory and data were recovered from the Goldstone and Alaska stations via Goddard. Replicated training sets and test sets have been selected from all three test site areas in preparation for the receipt of ERTS imagery and digital tapes. From 600 and 800 points have been selected at each site location and UTM coordinates determined. Templates are being made of these sets. As of September 1, ERTS-generated data had not been received and no statements can be made regarding quality or suitability for forest and range experiments. Aerial photography (scale 1:32,000) of the Manitou (226 C) and Black Hills (226 A) sites was taken with CIR in June. Various scales (1:2,000; 1:10,000; 1:20,000; and 1:40,000) of 70 mm photographs were obtained at Manitou with normal color, CIR, and panchromatic in August.

Concepts related to the origin of the genetic apparatus.

Since the genetic apparatus is composed of nucleic acid and protein, the origin of the apparatus involves the origin of polyaminoacids and of polynucleotides, separately or together. Laboratory models for the origins of the separate macromolecular types are considered. The origin of their joint synthesis, believed to have been necessary at a later stage, is also discussed. Proteins and nucleic acids appear to have definite relationships with each other in three major contemporary biological systems, including chromatin, ribosomes, and the protein synthesizing system using nucleic acid templates. Stages considered in connection with the flow of information in the early evolution of the apparatus are environment, protoprotein, protein, RNA, and DNA.

Automatic information extraction for land use and agricultural applications

Description of some current work in interpretation technique development for automatic computer-aided image information extraction related to various application areas, including land use mapping and agricultural survey and monitoring. In particular, the application of a fast template matching algorithm, employing the sequential similarity detection principle, to image registration, linear feature detection, and the extraction and enumeration of scene objects is discussed and illustrated.

The prebiotic synthesis of oligonucleotides

This paper is primarily a review of recent developments in the abiotic synthesis of nucleotides, short chain oligonucleotides, and their mode of replication in solution. It also presents preliminary results from this laboratory on the prebiotic synthesis of thymidine oligodeoxynucleotides. A discussion, based on the physicochemical properties of RNA and DNA oligomers, relevant to the molecular evolution of these compounds leads to the tentative hypothesis that oligodeoxyribonucleotides of about 12 units may have been of sufficient length to initiate a self replicating coding system. Two models are suggested to account for the synthesis of high molecular weight oligomers using short chain templates and primers.

Prebiotic chemistry and nucleic acid replication

Recent work is reviewed on some reactions that could have occurred on the primitive earth and that could have played a part in the evolution of a self-replicating system. The transition from the primitive atmosphere to the simplest replicating molecules is considered in four stages: (1) the formation of a 'prebiotic soup' of organic precursors, including the purine and pyrimidine bases and the pentose sugars; (2) the condensation of these precursors and inorganic phosphate to form monomeric nucleotides and activated nucleotide derivatives; (3) the polymerization of nucleotide derivatives to oligonucleotides; and (4) the complementary replication of oligonucleotides in a template-directed process that depends on Watson-Crick base pairing.

Oligonucleotide synthesis catalyzed by the Zn/2+/ ion

Results of experiments are reported in which Zn(2+) ion catalyzed the formation of oligonucleotides from nucleoside phosphorimidazolides in aqueous solution, even in the absence of a template. Specifically, the imidazolides (ImpU or ImpA) polymerized to form ImpApA, and pApA, pApApA, and pApApApA, or the analogous uracil compounds. In addition, the expected hydrolysis products of the hydrolysis of ImpA were formed (pA, imidazole). Judging from the ratio of pA(n) over pA (with and without zinc ion), this ion increased the efficiency of phosphodiester-bond formation by up to 10 times. Possible mechanisms for the reaction are tentatively proposed.

The application of image processing to satellite navigation

Given the locations of several landmarks on a satellite acquired image and their true geographic coordinates, the position and orientation of the satellite can be determined. Two methods for automatically locating the image coordinates of specified landmarks are described. The first, a particularly fast sequential similarity detection algorithm for template matching was originally described by Nagel and Rosenfeld. The second method involves iteratively resampling the picture function in the vicinity of the anticipated landmark. A variety of other speedup methods is also described. An application to SMS imagery is envisioned.

Automatic documentation system extension to multi-manufacturers' computers and to measure, improve, and predict software reliability. Appendix A and B

A manual which explains how to use the DOMONIC command language is presented. The manual consists of the following sections: 1. Introduction 2. What You Must Know to Use DOMONIC 3. Functions of DOMONIC 4. Entering and Manipulating Data 5. Templates and Data Definitions 6. Recipes and Document Generation 7. Initiating A Project and 8. Entering and Changing Security Controls. The first four sections must be known by all DOMONIC users. Sections five, seven and eight describe functions normally used only by project management. Section six tells how to generate documents. The manual specifies what commands to use in performing each of the functions mentioned above.

Computer solutions for studying correlations between solar magnetic fields and Skylab X-ray observations

A method is described which correlates the NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Image Data Processing System (IDAPS) and MSFC magnetograph data to X-ray and H-alpha observations from the Skylab mission. Solutions of Laplace's equation in three dimensions, based on the magnetograph data, are convolved with observed X-ray and H-alpha regions. Matched filtering (template matching) provides a best fit of the observed X-ray regions to the computed total magnetic vector magnitude between 10,000 and 15,000 km above the photosphere.
