The behavior of immiscible liquids in space

A demonstration experiment (TV102) was performed on the Skylab 4 mission to illustrate the behavior of immiscible liquids of different densities in zero-gravity. The purpose of the experiment was to determine the rate of coalescence of two well-characterized liquids, Krytox 143 AZ oil and water, after the liquids were finely dispersed by shaking. An analysis of the video-taped data and 35mm color transparencies indicates that all investigated emulsions were stable with only a small amount of observed coalescence for at least 10 hours after mixing, whereas the fluids in the ground-control case separated completely in 10 seconds. This experiment indicates that the coalescence rate was at least .000003 times smaller on Skylab than on earth.

A study to explore the use of orbital remote sensing to determine native arid plant distribution

The author has identified the following significant results. Research results include a method for determining the reflectivities of natural areas from ERTS data taking into account sun angle and atmospheric effects on the radiance seen by the satellite sensor. Ground truth spectral signature data for various types of scenes, including ground with and without annuals, and various shrubs were collected. Large areas of varnished desert pavement are visible and mappable on ERTS and high altitude aircraft imagery. A large scale and a small scale vegetation pattern were found to be correlated with presence of desert pavement. A comparison of radiometric data with video recordings shows quantitatively that for most areas of desert vegetation, soils are the most influential factor in determining the signature of a scene. Additive and subtractive image processing techniques were applied in the dark room to enhance vegetational aspects of ERTS.

Skylab contamination results: S052 particle analysis and T025 analysis

The size and velocity distributions of 500 contaminant particles in the near environs of Skylab were determined from video tape data obtained by the high altitude observatory's white light coronagraph. A complete listing of derived particle parameters, their frequency distributions, and their behavior as a function of time are presented. A correlation between particle size and velocity is noted, and at least two prominent directions of the particle spacecraft origins are identified.

Telecommunication service markets through the year 2000 in relation to millimeter wave satellite systems

NASA is currently conducting a series of millimeter wave satellite system and market studies to develop 30/20 GHz satellite system concepts that have commercial potential for the period 1980-2000. The results of the market studies to-date focusing on the overall demand forecasts and distributions by geographic location, distance, and user category are discussed. Tables are presented indicating baseline market forecast voice and video services, data service category, impacted baseline forecast, and traffic/distance distribution voice services. It is concluded that the total market and system activity will be influential in determining the potential role of millimeter wave systems in the overall transmission needs of the nation, and the amount of the total forecasted traffic suitable for millimeter wave systems.

The 30/20 GHz fixed communications systems service demand assessment. Volume 1: Executive summary

Demand for telecommunications services is forecasted for the period 1980-2000, with particular reference to that portion of the demand associated with satellite communications. Overall demand for telecommunications is predicted to increase by a factor of five over the period studied and the satellite portion of demand will increase even more rapidly. Traffic demand is separately estimated for voice, video, and data services and is also described as a function of distance traveled and city size. The satellite component of projected demand is compared with the capacity available in the C and Ku satellite bands and it is projected that new satellite technology and the implementation of Ka band transmission will be needed in the decade of the 1990's.

The 30/20 GHz fixed communications systems service demand assessment. Volume 2: Main report

A forecast of demand for telecommunications services through the year 2000 is presented with particular reference to demand for satellite communications. Estimates of demand are provided for voice, video, and data services and for various subcategories of these services. The results are converted to a common digital measure in terms of terabits per year and aggregated to obtain total demand projections.

The 18/30 GHz fixed communications system service demand assessment. Volume 2: Main text

The total demand for communications services, and satellite transmission services at the 4/6 GHz, 12/14 GHz, and 18/30 GHz frequencies is assessed. The services are voice, video, and data services. Traffic demand, by service, is distributed by geographical regions, population density, and distance between serving points. Further distribution of traffic is made among four major end user groups: business, government, institutions and private individuals. A traffic demand analysis is performed on a typical metropolitan city to examine service distribution trends. The projected cost of C and Ku band satellite systems are compared on an individual service basis to projected terrestrial rates. Separation of traffic between transmission systems, including 18/30 GHz systems, is based on cost, user, and technical considerations.

The 30/20 GHZ net market assessment

By creating a number of market scenarios variations dealing with network types, network sizes, and service price levels were analyzed for their impact on market demand. Each market scenario represents a market demand forecast with results for voice, data, and video service traffic expressed in peak load megabits per second.

Advanced communications satellites

The increase in demand for satellite communications services brought about shortages in available transponder capacity, especially at C-band. Interest shifted to the Ku-band frequency and currently carriers are rapidly moving to secure orbital slots for future satellite development. Projections of communications service demands over the next decade indiate growth in voice, data, and video services such that saturation of both C-band and Ku-band will occur by 1990. Emphasis must and will shift to Ka-band (20/30 GHz) frequency for fixed-satellite service. Advanced technologies such as multibeam antennas coupled with on-board satellite switching to allow implementation in this band of very high capacity satellite systems will be applied to meet the demand. Satellite system concepts that are likely in the 1990's and are likely to bring a new dimension to satellite delivered communication service are presented. The NASA 30/20 GHz communications satellite system demonstration program is discussed with emphasis on the related technology development.

The 30/20 GHz communications satellite trunking network study

Alternative transmission media for a CONUS-wide trunking network in the years 1990 and 2000 are examined. The alternative technologies comprised fiber optic cable, conventional C- and Ku-band satellites, and 30/20 GHz satellites. Three levels of implementation were considered - a 10-city network, a 20-city network, and a 40-city network. The cities selected were the major metropolitan areas with the greatest communications demand. All intercity voice, data, and video traffic carried more than 40 miles was included in the analysis. In the optimized network, traffic transmitted less than 500 miles was found to be better served by fiber optic cable in 1990. By the year 2000, the crossover point would be down to 200 miles, assuming availability of 30/20 GHz satellites.

An experimental study of the flow in a wing with a partial span drooped leading edge

The flow field produced by a low aspect ratio wing (AR = 3.0) with a partial span leading edge droop was investigated in a series of low speed wind tunnel tests (Reynolds number based on 17.8 cm chord = 560,000). Photographs were obtained of surface oil flow patterns over an angle of attack range of alpha = 0 to 29 deg. Flow field surveys of the partially stalled wing at alpha = 25 deg were completed using a hot-wire probe, a split-film probe and a Conrad probe. The flow field survey data was presented using a color video display. The data indicated regions of apparent reversed flow in the separation region behind the wing and indicated the general cross-sectional shape of the separated wake flow.
