Experimental demonstration of a 5 kW th granular-flow reactor for solar thermochemical energy storage with aluminum-doped calcium manganite particles

A two-step cycle was discussed for solar thermochemical energy storage based on aluminum-doped calcium manganite reduction/oxidation reactions for direct integration into Air Brayton cycles. The two steps encompassed 1) the storage of concentrated solar direct irradiation via the thermal reduction of aluminum-doped calcium manganite and 2) the delivery of heat to an Air-Brayton cycle via re-oxidation of oxygen-deficient aluminum-doped calcium manganite. The re-oxidized aluminum-doped calcium manganite was fed back to the first step to complete the cycle. A 5 kWth solar thermochemical reactor operating under vacuum was fabricated and tested to examine the first cycle reduction step. Reactor operating conditions and high-flux solar simulator control were tuned for continuous reactor operation with particle temperatures > 1073 K. Continuous operation was achieved using intermittent, dense granular flows. A maximum absorption efficiency of 64.7% was shown, accounting for both sensible and chemical heat storage.

Influence of substrate composition on size and chemical state of ion beam synthesised Co nanoparticles – Towards fabrication of electrodes for energy devices

A one-step approach to synthesize ultrafine transition metal particles (size < 5 nm) in carbon substrates is highly desirable for fabricating electrodes for energy devices. Herein, cobalt ion implantation into amorphous carbon films (a:C) and hydrogenated amorphous carbon films (a:CH) was explored, with the aim of synthesizing ultrafine metallic cobalt nanoparticles at room temperature. Co ions of 30 keV energy were implanted into the carbon films to achieve a Co areal density of 1.0 ± 0.1 × 10 17 atoms cm -2 . Rutherford backscattering measurements revealed that hydrogenated amorphous carbon films gave a broader Co depth distribution compared to the amorphous carbon films. Further, cross-sectional TEM analysis revealed that hydrogenated carbon films suppressed metallic Co nanoparticle aggregation, leading to the creation of ultrafine Co nanoparticles (size < 5 nm). Co L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements confirmed the formation of predominantly metallic Co nanoparticles by ion implantation. Results conclusively demonstrate that the presence of hydrogen (~ 28 at%) in the carbon matrix facilitates the synthesis of ultrafine metallic Co nanoparticles during Co ion implantation.

Uranium particle age dating, aggregation, and model age best estimators

We present important aspects of uranium particle age dating by Large-Geometry Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (LG-SIMS) that can introduce bias and increase model age uncertainties, especially for small, young, and/or low-enriched particles. This metrology is important for applications related to International Nuclear Safeguards. We explore influential factors related to model age estimation, including the effects of evolving surface chemistry on inter-element measurements of particles (e.g., Th and U), detector background, and aggregation methods using simulated and actual particle samples. We introduce a new model age estimator, called “mid68”, that supplements 95% confidence intervals, providing a “best estimate” and uncertainty about the most likely age. The mid68 estimator can be calculated using the Feldman and Cousins method or Bayesian methods and provides a value with a symmetric uncertainty that can be used for calculations and approximate aggregation of processed model age values when the raw data and correction factors are not available. For particles yielding low 230 Th counts amidst nonzero detector background, their underlying model age probability distributions are asymmetric, so the mid68 estimator provides additional robust information regarding the underlying model age likelihood. This study provides a comprehensive and timely examination of critical aspects of uranium particle age dating as more laboratories establish particle chronometry capabilities.

Luminescence relaxation dynamics for planar and rolled-up CdSe nanocrystals in a photonic-crystal matrix

Samples of inverted photonic-crystal films, containing planar and rolled-up (in the form of scrolls) CdSe nanocrystals, are studied. The transmission spectra of these structures are recorded. These spectra (along with the change in colour) confirm the incorporation of nanocrystals into the films. The photoluminescence decay dynamics is investigated. It is shown that the photonic-crystal matrix affects significantly the luminescence kinetics of nanostructures. The differences in the decay curves measured for nanocrystals in a photonic-crystal matrix and for their ensemble on a glass substrate are explained by the influence of the photonic-crystal stop band and the orientational effect of crystalline matrix, which orients anisotropic nanocrystals and prevents them from aggregation. The results obtained may be important for potential applications in optoelectronic devices. (paper)

Particle dynamics in the spatial afterglow of flowing dusty plasmas

Final technical report for project Department of Energy - DE-SC0022242. The overarching hypothesis of this project was that the particle dynamics in the afterglow of dusty plasmas are determined by the interplay of the transient plasma properties and the material properties of dust particles. By combining experiments and modeling in an approach fundamentally different from prior research, this project investigated correlations between material properties and basic dust charging and decharging mechanisms.
