Search for heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos in the decay of top quarks produced in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos is performed with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, using the 140 fb -1 of proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV collected during Run 2. This search targets $t\overline{t}$ production, in which both top quarks decay into a bottom quark and a W boson, where one of the W bosons decays hadronically and the other decays into an electron or muon and a heavy neutral lepton. The heavy neutral lepton is identified through a decay into an electron or muon and another W boson, resulting in a pair of same-charge same-flavor leptons in the final state. This paper presents the first search for heavy neutral leptons in the mass range of 15–75 GeV using $t\overline{t}$ events. No significant excess is observed over the background expectation, and upper limits are placed on the signal cross sections. Assuming a benchmark scenario of the phenomenological type-I seesaw model, these cross section limits are then translated into upper limits on the mixing parameters of the heavy Majorana neutrino with Standard Model neutrinos.

Particle production as a function of charged-particle flattenicity in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This paper reports the first measurement of the transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) spectra of primary charged pions, kaons, (anti)protons, and unidentified particles as a function of the charged-particle flattenicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV. Flattenicity is a novel event shape observable that is measured in the pseudorapidity intervals covered by the V0 detector, 2.8 < 𝜂 < 5.1 and −3.7 < 𝜂 < −1.7. According to QCD-inspired phenomenological models, it shows sensitivity to multiparton interactions and is less affected by biases toward larger 𝑝 T due to local multiplicity fluctuations in the V0 acceptance than multiplicity. The analysis is performed in minimum-bias (MB) as well as in high-multiplicity events up to 𝑝 T = 20 GeV/⁢𝑐. The event selection requires at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval |𝜂| < 1. The measured 𝑝 T distributions, average 𝑝 T , kaon-to-pion and proton-to-pion particle ratios, presented in this paper, are compared to model calculations using pythia 8 based on color strings and EPOS LHC. The modification of the 𝑝 T -spectral shapes in low-flattenicity events that have large event activity with respect to those measured in MB events develops a pronounced peak at intermediate 𝑝 T (2 < 𝑝 T < 8 GeV/𝑐), and approaches the vicinity of unity at higher 𝑝 T . The results are qualitatively described by pythia, and they show different behavior than those measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity based on the V0M estimator.

Combination of searches for singly produced vectorlike top quarks in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A combination of searches for the single production of vectorlike top quarks (𝑇) is presented. These analyses are based on proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV recorded in 2015–2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb −1 . The 𝑇 decay modes considered in this combination are into a top quark and either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a 𝑍 boson (𝑇 → 𝐻⁡𝑡 and 𝑇 → 𝑍⁢𝑡). The individual searches used in the combination are differentiated by the number of leptons (𝑒, 𝜇) in the final state. The observed data are found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model background prediction. Interpretations are provided for a range of masses and couplings of the vectorlike top quark for benchmark models and generalized representations in terms of 95% confidence level limits. For a benchmark signal prediction of a vectorlike top quark SU(2) singlet with electroweak coupling, 𝜅, of 0.5, masses below 2.1 TeV are excluded, resulting in the most restrictive limits to date.

Search for triple Higgs boson production in the 6⁢𝑏 final state using 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the production of three Higgs bosons (𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝐻) in the $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ final state is presented. The search uses 126 fb −1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis targets both nonresonant and resonant production of 𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝐻. The resonant interpretations primarily consider a cascade decay topology of 𝑋 →𝑆⁢𝐻 → 𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝐻 with masses of the new scalars 𝑋 and 𝑆 up to 1.5 and 1 TeV, respectively. In addition to scenarios where 𝑆 is off-shell, the nonresonant interpretation includes a search for Standard Model 𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝐻 production, with limits on the trilinear and quartic Higgs self-coupling set. No evidence for 𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝐻 production is observed. An upper limit of 59 fb is set, at the 95% confidence level, on the cross section for Standard Model 𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝐻 production.

Measurement of photonuclear jet production in ultraperipheral Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at the LHC, each nucleus acts a sources of high-energy real photons that can scatter off the opposing nucleus in ultraperipheral photonuclear (𝛾 + 𝐴) collisions. Hard scattering processes initiated by the photons in such collisions provide a novel method for probing nuclear parton distributions in a kinematic region not easily accessible to other measurements. ATLAS has measured production of dijet and multijet final states in ultraperipheral Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV using a dataset recorded in 2018 with an integrated luminosity of 1.72 nb −1 . Photonuclear final states are selected by requiring a rapidity gap in the photon direction; this selects events where one of the outgoing nuclei remains intact. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-𝑘 t algorithm with radius parameter, 𝑅 = 0.4. Triple-differential cross sections, unfolded for detector response, are measured and presented using two sets of kinematic variables. The first set consists of the total transverse momentum (𝐻 T ), rapidity, and mass of the jet system. The second set uses 𝐻 T and particle-level nuclear and photon parton momentum fractions, 𝑥 A and 𝑧 𝛾 , respectively. The results are compared with leading-order perturbative QCD calculations of photonuclear jet production cross sections, where all leading order predictions using existing fits fall below the data in the shadowing region. More detailed theoretical comparisons will allow these results to strongly constrain nuclear parton distributions, and these data provide results from the LHC directly comparable to early physics results at the planned Electron-Ion Collider.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Simulation-based cosmological inference with wavelet harmonics, scattering transforms, and moments of weak lensing mass maps. II. cosmological results

Here, we present a simulation-based cosmological analysis using a combination of Gaussian and non-Gaussian statistics of the weak lensing mass (convergence) maps from the first three years of the Dark Energy Survey. We implement the following: (1) second and third moments; (2) wavelet phase harmonics; (3) the scattering transform. Our analysis is fully based on simulations, spans a space of seven 𝑤 Cold Dark Matter (𝑤⁢ CDM) cosmological parameters, and forward models the most relevant sources of systematics inherent in the data: masks, noise variations, clustering of the sources, intrinsic alignments, and shear and redshift calibration. We implement a neural network compression of the summary statistics, and we estimate the parameter posteriors using a simulation-based inference approach. Including and combining different non-Gaussian statistics is a powerful tool that strongly improves constraints over Gaussian statistics (in our case, the second moments); in particular, the figure of merit (𝑆 8 , Ω m ) is improved by 70% (Λ ⁢CDM) and 90% (𝑤 ⁢CDM). When all the summary statistics are combined, we achieve a 2% constraint on the amplitude of fluctuations parameter 𝑆 8 ≡ 𝜎 8 ⁢(Ω m /0.3) 0.5 , obtaining 𝑆 8 = 0.794 ±0.017 (Λ⁢ CDM) and 𝑆 8 = 0.817 ±0.021 (𝑤 ⁢CDM), and a ∼10% constraint on Ω m , obtaining Ω m =0.259 ±0.025 (Λ ⁢CDM) and Ω m = 0.273 ±0.029 (𝑤⁢ CDM). In the context of the 𝑤⁢ CDM scenario, these statistics also strengthen the constraints on the parameter 𝑤, obtaining 𝑤 <−0.72. The constraints from different statistics are shown to be internally consistent (with a 𝑝-value>0.1 for all combinations of statistics examined). We compare our results to other weak lensing results from the first three years of the Dark Energy Survey data, finding good consistency; we also compare with results from external datasets, such as planck constraints from the cosmic microwave background, finding statistical agreement, with discrepancies no greater than <2.2⁢𝜎.

Multiprobe cosmology from the abundance of SPT clusters and DES galaxy clustering and weak lensing

Cosmic shear, galaxy clustering, and the abundance of massive halos each probe the large-scale structure of the Universe in complementary ways. We present cosmological constraints from the joint analysis of the three probes, building on the latest analyses of the lensing-informed abundance of clusters identified by the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and of the auto- and cross-correlation of galaxy position and weak lensing measurements (3 × 2 ⁢pt) in the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We consider the cosmological correlation between the different tracers and we account for the systematic uncertainties that are shared between the large-scale lensing correlation functions and the small-scale lensing-based cluster mass calibration. Marginalized over the remaining Λ cold dark matter (Λ ⁢CDM) parameters (including the sum of neutrino masses) and 52 astrophysical modeling parameters, we measure Ω m = 0.300 ± 0.017 and 𝜎 8 = 0.797 ± 0.026. Compared to constraints from Planck primary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, our constraints are only 15% wider with a probability to exceed of 0.22 (1.2⁢𝜎) for the two-parameter difference. We further obtain 𝑆 8 ≡𝜎 8 ⁢(Ω m /0.3) 0.5 = 0.796 ± 0.013 which is lower than the Planck measurement at the 1.6⁢𝜎 level. The combined SPT cluster, DES 3 ×2 ⁢pt, and Planck datasets mildly prefer a nonzero positive neutrino mass, with a 95% upper limit ∑ 𝑚 𝜈 < 0.25 eV on the sum of neutrino masses. Assuming a 𝑤⁢CDM model, we constrain the dark energy equation of state parameter 𝑤 = −1.1⁢5$^{+0.23}_{−0.17}$ and when combining with Planck primary CMB anisotropies, we recover 𝑤 = −1.2⁢0$^{+0.15}_{−0.09}$, a 1.7⁢𝜎 difference with a cosmological constant. The precision of our results highlights the benefits of multiwavelength multiprobe cosmology and our analysis paves the way for upcoming joint analyses of next-generation datasets.

First measurement of 𝐷 𝑠⁢1 ⁡(1 + )⁢(2536) + and 𝐷$^{*}_{𝑠⁢2}$⁡(2 + )⁢(2573) + production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the LHC

The production yields of the orbitally excited charm-strange mesons D s⁢1 ⁡(1 + )⁢(2536)+ and 𝐷$^{*}_{𝑠⁢2}$⁡(2 + )⁢(2573) + were measured for the first time in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The D$^{+}_{s⁢1}$ and D$^{*+}_{s⁢2}$ mesons were measured at midrapidity (|𝑦| < 0.5) in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions in the transverse-momentum interval 2< 𝑝 T < 24 GeV/𝑐. Their production yields relative to the D$^{+}_{s}$ ground-state yield were found to be compatible between minimum-bias and high-multiplicity collisions, as well as with previous measurements in e ± ⁢p and e + ⁢e − collisions. The measured D$^{+}_{s⁢1}$/D$^{+}_{s}$ and D$^{*+}_{s⁢2}$/D$^{+}_{s}$ yield ratios are described by statistical hadronization models and can be used to tune the parameters governing the production of excited charm-strange hadrons in Monte Carlo generators, such as pythia 8.

Disentangling Sources of Momentum Fluctuations in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

High-energy nuclear collisions create a quark-gluon plasma, whose initial condition and subsequent expansion vary from event to event, impacting the distribution of the eventwise average transverse momentum [𝑃⁡([𝑝 T ])]. Disentangling the contributions from fluctuations in the nuclear overlap size (geometrical component) and other sources at a fixed size (intrinsic component) remains a challenge. This problem is addressed by measuring the mean, variance, and skewness of 𝑃⁡([𝑝 T ]) in 208 Pb + 208 Pb and 129 Xe + 129 Xe collisions at $\sqrt{S{NN}}$ = 5.02 and 5.44 TeV, respectively, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. All observables show distinct features in ultracentral collisions, which are explained by a suppression of the geometrical component as the overlap area reaches its maximum. These results demonstrate a new technique to separate geometrical and intrinsic fluctuations, providing constraints on initial conditions and properties of the quark-gluon plasma, such as the speed of sound.

Simultaneous Unbinned Differential Cross-Section Measurement of Twenty-Four Z+jets Kinematic Observables with the ATLAS Detector

Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins. In this analysis, a machine learning method called omnifold is used to produce a simultaneous measurement of twenty-four Z +jets observables using 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at √s =13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. Unlike any previous fiducial differential cross-section measurement, this result is presented unbinned as a dataset of particle-level events, allowing for flexible reuse in a variety of contexts and for new observables to be constructed from the twenty-four measured observables.

First Direct-Detection Results on Sub-GeV Dark Matter Using the SENSEI Detector at SNOLAB

Here, we present the first results from a dark matter search using six Skipper-CCDs in the SENSEI detector operating at SNOLAB. We employ a bias-mitigation technique of hiding approximately 46% of our total data and aggressively mask images to remove backgrounds. Given a total exposure after masking of 100.72 gram-days from well-performing sensors, we observe 55 two-electron events, 4 three-electron events, and no events containing 4–10 electrons. The two-electron events are consistent with pileup from one-electron events. Among the 4 three-electron events, 2 appear in pixels that are likely impacted by detector defects, although not strongly enough to trigger our “hot-pixel” mask. We use these data to set world-leading constraints on sub-GeV dark matter interacting with electrons and nuclei.

Probing Strangeness Hadronization with Event-by-Event Production of Multistrange Hadrons

This Letter presents the first measurement of event-by-event fluctuations of the net number (difference between the particle and antiparticle multiplicities) of multistrange hadrons Ξ − and $\overline{Ξ}$ + and its correlation with the net-kaon number using the data collected by the ALICE Collaboration in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The statistical hadronization model with a correlation over three units of rapidity between hadrons having the same and opposite strangeness content successfully describes the results. On the other hand, string-fragmentation models that mainly correlate strange hadrons with opposite strange quark content over a small rapidity range fail to describe the data.

Antiprotons and Elementary Particles over a Solar Cycle: Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

We present results over an 11-year Solar cycle of cosmic antiprotons based on 1.1 × 10 6 events in the rigidity range from 1.00 to 41.9 GV. The $\bar{𝑝}$ fluxes exhibit distinct properties. The magnitude of the $\bar{𝑝}$ flux temporal variation is significantly smaller than those of 𝑝, 𝑒 − , and 𝑒 + . A hysteresis between the $\bar{𝑝}$ fluxes and the 𝑝 fluxes is observed, whereas the $\bar{𝑝}$ and 𝑒 − fluxes show a linear correlation. With a model-independent analysis, we found a universal relation between the shape of the rigidity spectrum and the magnitude of flux temporal variation over an 11-year Solar cycle for both positively and negatively charged particles. The simultaneous results on $\bar{𝑝}$ and 𝑝, 𝑒 − , and 𝑒 + provide unique information for understanding particle transport in the Solar System as a function of mass, charge, and spectral shape.

Observation of $t\bar{t}$ Production in Pb+Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Top-quark pair production is observed in lead–lead (Pb+Pb) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector. The data sample was recorded in 2015 and 2018, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 nb −1 . Events with exactly one electron and one muon and at least two jets are selected. Top-quark pair production is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.1) standard deviations. The measured top-quark pair production cross section is 𝜎 𝑡⁢$\tilde{i}$ = 3.6⁢$^{+1.0}_{−0.9}$⁢(stat)⁢ $^{+0.8}_{−0.5}$⁢(syst) μ⁢b, with a total relative uncertainty of 31%, and is consistent with theoretical predictions using a range of different nuclear parton distribution functions. The observation of this process consolidates the evidence of the existence of all quark flavors in the preequilibrium stage of the quark-gluon plasma at very high energy densities, similar to the conditions present in the early Universe.

First Measurement of 𝐴 = 4 Hypernuclei and Antihypernuclei at the LHC

In this Letter, the first evidence of the $^4_{\bar{Λ}}$$\overline{He}$ antihypernucleus is presented, along with the first measurement at the LHC of the production of (anti)hypernuclei with mass number 𝐴 = 4, specifically (anti)⁢$^4_Λ$H and (anti)⁢$^4_Λ$He. In addition, the antiparticle-to-particle ratios for both hypernuclei ($^4_{\bar{Λ}}$$\bar{H}$⁡/$^4_Λ$H and $^4_{\bar{Λ}}$$\overline{He}$/$^4_Λ$He) are shown, which are sensitive to the baryochemical potential of the strongly interacting matter created in heavy-ion collisions. The results are obtained from a data sample of central Pb-Pb collisions, collected during the 2018 LHC data taking at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{𝑠_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The yields measured for the average of the charge-conjugated states are found to be [0.78 ± 0.19⁢(stat) ± 0.17⁢(syst)] × 10 −6 for the (anti)⁢$^4_Λ$H and [1.08 ± 0.34⁢(stat)± 0.20⁢(syst)] × 10 −6 for the (anti)⁢$^4_Λ$He, and the measured antiparticle-to-particle ratios are in agreement with unity. The presence of (anti)⁢$^4_Λ$H and (anti)⁢$^4_Λ$He excited states is expected to strongly enhance the production yield of these hypernuclei. The yield values exhibit a combined deviation of 3.3⁢𝜎 from the theoretical ground-state-only expectation, while the inclusion of the excited states in the calculations leads to an agreement within 0.6⁢𝜎 with the present measurements. Additionally, the measured (anti)$^4_Λ$H and (anti)⁢$^4_Λ$He masses are compatible with the world-average values within the uncertainties.

Properties of Cosmic Lithium Isotopes Measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

We present the first measurement of cosmic-ray fluxes of 6 Li and 7 Li isotopes in the rigidity range from 1.9 to 25 GV. The measurements are based on 9.7 × 10 5 6 Li and 1.04 × 10 6 7 Li nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station from May 2011 to October 2023. We observe that over the entire rigidity range the 6 Li and 7 Li fluxes exhibit nearly identical time variations and, above ∼4 GV, the time variations of 6 Li , 7 Li , He, Be, B, C, N, and O fluxes are identical. Above ∼7 GV, we find an identical rigidity dependence of the 6 Li and 7 Li fluxes. This shows that they are both produced by collisions of heavier cosmic-ray nuclei with the interstellar medium and, in particular, excludes the existence of a sizable primary component in the 7 Li flux.

Search for Quasiparticle Scattering in the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Jet Splittings in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and Pb-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports measurements of the large relative transverse momentum (𝑘 𝑇 ) component of jet substructure in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Enhancement in the yield of such large-𝑘 T emissions in head-on Pb-Pb collisions is predicted to arise from partonic scattering with quasiparticles of the quark-gluon plasma. The analysis utilizes charged-particle jets reconstructed by the anti-𝑘 T algorithm with resolution parameter 𝑅 = 0.2 in the transverse-momentum interval 60 < 𝑝 T,ch,jet < 80 GeV/𝑐. The soft drop and dynamical grooming algorithms are used to identify high transverse momentum splittings in the jet shower. Comparison of measurements in Pb-Pb and 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions shows medium-induced narrowing, corresponding to yield suppression of high-𝑘 𝑇 splittings, in contrast to the expectation of yield enhancement due to quasiparticle scattering. The measurements are compared to theoretical model calculations incorporating jet modification due to jet-medium interactions (“jet quenching”), both with and without quasiparticle scattering effects. These measurements provide new insight into the underlying mechanisms and theoretical modeling of jet quenching.
