Dependence of field-aligned electron precipitation on season, altitude and pitch angle

The occurrence of field-aligned 2.3 keV electron precipitation was examined by using data from more than 7500 orbits of the polar-orbiting satellite, OGO-4. The frequency of occurrence of field aligned precipitation was highest at actual pitch angles between 7 and 10 deg, being highest in the winter months, at highest satellite altitudes. Acceleration by a localized parallel electric field established by electrostatic charge layers is proposed to explain particle observations.

Distributions and characteristics of high-latitude field-aligned electron precipitation.

Satellite measurements of field-aligned auroral electron precipitation have been analyzed using 16 months of data from the OGO 4 auroral particles experiment. As can be seen from the moving satellite, the anisotropies are of short duration and are most likely to occur when particle fluxes are high. Field-aligned 2.3-keV electron precipitation is found in an oval-shaped region primarily in the nighttime hours; maximum probability is at about 70 deg invariant latitude near midnight, congruent to and poleward of the auroral optical emissions in these hours. This precipitation is found to be associated with the high-latitude boundary of auroral electron precipitation during substorm expansion and is characterized by a slightly harder and considerably more intense energy spectrum than typical isotropic precipitation.-

Field-aligned currents, plasma waves, and anomalous resistivity in the disturbed polar cusp.

During the magnetic storm of November 1, 1968, the Ogo 5 spacecraft encountered the polar cusp region at low magnetic latitudes. We show that the region just outside the last closed field lines contained a warm magnetosheath plasma, magnetic field perturbations interpretable as field-aligned current layers, and electrostatic waves possibly due to plasma instabilities driven by these currents. Estimates of anomalous resistivity extrapolated along the field lines due to these electrostatic waves lead to estimates of field-aligned potential drops between Ogo 5 and the ionosphere on the order of 2 kV.

Field aligned current observations in the polar cusp ionosphere

Vector magnetic field measurements made during a sounding rocket flight in the polar cusp ionosphere show field fluctuations in the lower F-region which are interpreted as being caused by the payload's passage through a structured field aligned current system. The field aligned currents have a characteristic horizontal scale size of one kilometer. Analysis of one large field fluctuation gives a current density of 0.0001 amp/m sq.

Optical alignment of a 0.5 meter ultra-violet spectrometer for Apollo 17

Description of the design and performance of a 0.5 m Ebert spectrometer mounted on Apollo 17 for research on the ultraviolet spectrum of the lunar atmosphere. The instrument was designed for operation in the range 1175 to 1675 A. A method was developed for aligning subassemblies in such a way that the assembled instrument would be aligned in the ultraviolet to an accuracy of 2 A with maximum efficiency.

Field-aligned current observations in the polar cusp ionosphere

The field-aligned currents have a characteristic horizontal scale size of about 1 km. Analysis of one large field fluctuation gives a current density of .001 A/sq m.

Dependence of field-aligned electron precipitation occurrence on season and altitude

An examination of factors affecting the occurrence of field-aligned 2.3-keV electron precipitation has been performed by using data from more than 7500 orbits of the polar-orbiting satellite Ogo 4. Both season and altitude were found to be parameters that are directly related to the probability of occurrence. The highest probabilities occurred when the measurements were made at altitudes from 800 km to apogee (914 km), except during summer. In this altitude interval, the electron precipitation was more likely to be field-aligned during winter than during any other season. The analysis suggests the establishment by electrostatic charge layers of localized electric fields parallel to the magnetic field. The resulting potential distribution focuses the electron beam along the field lines in the region between the charge layers but destroys the focused beam below the lower layer, and thus an altitude dependence is created.

Net field-aligned currents observed by Triad

From the Triad magnetometer observation of a step-like level shift in the east-west component of the magnetic field at 800 km altitude, the existence of a net current flowing into or away from the ionosphere in a current layer was inferred. The current direction is toward the ionosphere on the morning side and away from it on the afternoon side. The field aligned currents observed by Triad are considered as being an important element in the electro-dynamical coupling between the distant magnetosphere and the ionosphere. The current density integrated over the thickness of the layer increases with increasing magnetic activity, but the relation between the current density and Kp in individual cases is not a simple linear relation. An extrapolation of the statistical relation to Kp = 0 indicates existence of a sheet current of order 0.1 amp/m even at extremely quiet times. During periods of higher magnetic activity an integrated current of approximately 1 amp/m and average current density of order 0.000001 amp/sq m are observed. The location and the latitudinal width of the field aligned current layer carrying the net current very roughly agree with those of the region of high electron intensities in the trapping boundary.

The ground state properties of spin-aligned atomic hydrogen, deuterium, and tritium

The internal energy, pressure, and compressibility of ground-state, spin-aligned atomic hydrogen, deuterium, and tritium are calculated assuming that all pair interactions occur via the atomic triplet (spin-aligned) potential. The conditions required to obtain atomic hydrogen and its isotopes in bulk are discussed; such a development would be of value in propulsion systems because of the light mass and energetic recombination of atomic hydrogen. Results show that atomic triplet hydrogen and deuterium remain gaseous at 0 K, and that tritium forms a liquid with a binding energy of approximately -0.75 K per atom at a molar volume of 130 cu cm per mole. The pair distribution function for these systems is calculated, and the predicted superfluid behavior of atomic triplet hydrogen and tritium is briefly discussed.

Shuttle onboard IMU alignment methods

The current approach to the shuttle IMU alignment is based solely on the Apollo Deterministic Method. This method is simple, fast, reliable and provides an accurate estimate for the present cluster to mean of 1,950 transformation matrix. If four or more star sightings are available, the application of least squares analysis can be utilized. The least squares method offers the next level of sophistication to the IMU alignment solution. The least squares method studied shows that a more accurate estimate for the misalignment angles is computed, and the IMU drift rates are a free by-product of the analysis. Core storage requirements are considerably more; estimated 20 to 30 times the core required for the Apollo Deterministic Method. The least squares method offers an intermediate solution utilizing as much data that is available without a complete statistical analysis as in Kalman filtering.

The partially aligned gradient instability in the ionosphere

Ionization irregularities which are almost but not exactly aligned along the magnetic field may grow much more rapidly than purely aligned irregularities in the presence of a background gradient of ionization and current flow. The stability of these irregularities is considered, taking into account the finite thickness of the gradient and shear in the ion motion. It is shown in particular that the normal E region of the ionosphere is usually stable, whereas sporadic E is often unstable, and this may limit the compression of metallic ions to form such layers. The F region may sometimes be unstable. Temperate zone conditions are considered throughout.

Field-aligned currents in the Jovian magnetosphere - Pioneer 10 and 11

Field-aligned currents, which are known to play an important role in the dynamics of the earth's magnetosphere, would also be expected to flow in the Jovian magnetosphere during magnetically active periods. Such currents are difficult to observe largely because of their limited spatial extent and intermittent nature, but on the Pioneer 11 inbound pass to Jupiter on day 336, 1800 GRT, near the L shell of Ganymede, the helium vector magnetometer recorded a structured perturbation with the characteristic signature of a field-aligned current. No analogous structure was found on a similar Pioneer 10 inbound pass (day 337, 1200 GRT). The perturbation could have been caused by turbulence with the wake of Ganymede through which the spacecraft was moving or the perturbation could represent the first observation of a Jovian substorm. The observations are discussed in terms of both models, and difficulties are examined.

Field-aligned currents observed by the Ogo 5 and Triad satellites

The Triad (at a height of 800 km) and Ogo 5 (in the high altitude magnetosphere) magnetic field observations have shown the existence of a field-aligned current system consisting of currents flowing in the polar cap boundary layer and those flowing in another layer located equatorward of the former. In the polar cap boundary layer (identified as the high-latitude boundary of the plasma sheet in the nightside magnetosphere), the current flows into the ionosphere on the morning side and away from the ionosphere on the afternoon side. In the lower-latitude layer, the current directions are reversed. The current in the polar cap boundary layer is considered as the primary field-aligned current system.

The influence of growth speed, orientation and environment on fracture of aligned Al-CuAl2

There has been considerable interest in the mechanical properties of aligned eutectics as functions of microstructure, orientation between reinforcement and stress axis, and temperature of testing. However, little is known about the behavior of these alloys in aggressive environments, such as liquid metals, with the exception of a recent paper on embrittlement of several eutectic alloys in gallium and gallium-indium alloys. This paper is concerned with the effects of a liquid Ga-16%In solution on tensile behavior of an aligned Al-CuAl2 eutectic.

Field-aligned currents and ionospheric electric fields

It is shown that the observed distribution of the ionospheric electric field can be deduced from an equation combining Ohm's law with the current continuity equation by using the 'observed' distribution of field-aligned currents as the boundary condition for two models of the ionosphere. The first model has one conductive annular ring representing the quiet-time auroral precipitation belt; the second has two conductive annular rings that simulate the discrete and diffuse auroral regions. An analysis is performed to determine how well the electric-field distribution can be reproduced. The results indicate that the first model reproduces the Sq(p)-type distribution, the second model reproduces reasonably well a substorm-type potential and ionospheric current patterns together with the Harang discontinuity, and that the distribution of field-aligned currents is the same for both models.

Alignment control study for the solar optical telescope

Analysis of the alignment and focus errors than can be tolerated, methods of sensing such errors, and mechanisms to make the necessary corrections were addressed. Alternate approaches and their relative merits were considered. The results of this study indicate that adequate alignment control can be achieved.

The relationship between field-aligned current, carried by suprathermal electrons, and the auroral arc

Data from four auroral sounding rockets, which directly measured field-aligned currents with particle detectors, are presented. The largest fraction of the field-aligned current carried by electrons was (1) due to precipitating electrons of energy less than 1 keV; (2) located spatially at the edges of the auroral luminosity. A model is suggested in which these currents couple the ionosphere to the magnetosphere and produce the pre-breakup auroral arc.

On the alignment of plasma anisotropies and the magnetic field direction in the solar wind

One year's Imp 6 solar wind plasma and magnetic field data are examined to determine whether anisotropies in particle velocity distributions are aligned with the measured interplanetary magnetic field vector. Alignment of components in the analysis plane was generally found to be excellent whenever plasma parameter magnitudes were larger than determination uncertainties, although some spread exists (typical rms approximately equal to 10 deg). By assuming cylindrical symmetry about the simultaneously measured magnetic field vector during the 1-year interval under study, three-dimensional values of selected solar wind plasma thermal parameters were constructed from the two-dimensional plasma measurements, and the statistical properties of their distributions have been tabulated.
