Particle accelerator spin-transparent storage rings for beyond state-of-the-art science

We describe spin-transparent storage rings that exhibit coherence times of many hours and store a large number of particles and their use in novel applications. For example, these rings can be used to directly measure the electric dipole moment of the electron, relevant to CP violation and matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, and to search for axion-mediated forces. These rings can also serve as a compelling platform for quantum computing. In particular, we will describe how spin-transparent rings can be used in conjunction with ion traps to enhance scalability and increase quantum-coherence times of ion quantum computing.

USDOE ART Graphite – Selection and Acquisition Strategy

The previous Selection and Acquisition Strategy document dates from 2007. Since then, significant changes have occurred with reactor vendors and with the graphite manufacturers. There have also been changes in the membership of the Gen IV International Forum. These factors were considered when formulating a revised selection and selection strategy. In summary, the new graphite selection and acquisition plan is that no graphite billets will be purchased until there is new graphite production (NBG-18, PCEA). Existing supplies of NBG-17, NBG-18, PCEA, IG-110, 2114 are considered enough for future work.

RANGERS: State of the Art and Science on Engineered Barrier Systems in Salt Formations

The construction of deep geological repositories (DGR) in salt formations requires penetrating through naturally sealing geosphere layers. While the emplaced nuclear waste is primarily protected by the containment-providing rock zone (CRZ), technical barriers are required, for example during handling. For closure geotechnical barriers seal the repository along the accesses against water or solutions from outside and the possible emission paths for radionuclides contained inside. As these barriers must ensure maintenance-free function on a long-term basis, they typically comprise a set of specialized elements with diversified functions that may be used redundantly. The effects of the individual elements are coordinated so that they are collectively referred to as the Engineered Barrier System (EBS).

Comparison of Commercial, State-of-the-Art, Fossil-Based Hydrogen Production Technologies

This report presents an independent assessment of the cost and performance of select hydrogen production plants utilizing fossil fuel resources as the primary feedstocks – specifically, natural gas (NG), steam methane reforming (SMR), NG autothermal reforming (ATR), coal gasification, and coal/biomass co-gasification – using a systematic, transparent technical and economic approach. Study cases were selected to reflect the capabilities of current, commercial technologies within plant configurations, and at scales, representative of next commercial offerings facing no fundamental research and development (R&D) obstacles. Additionally, several areas of R&D are identified as potential pathways for performance improvements and cost reductions.

HELIOCOMM: Wireless Controls State-of-the-Art Report

This report introduces the concept of wireless controls in heliostat-based concentrating solar thermal power (CSP) systems. Specifically, the need for wireless communications to be implemented within the heliostat-based CSP systems is identified versus the existing approaches that follow wireline connections which suffer from high installation, operation, and maintenance cost. Furthermore, this report analyzes the most recent advances in the field of developing wireless controls in heliostat-based CSP systems, which are highlighted to be in their infancy given the primitive wireless networking solutions that they currently utilize and test. The main contribution of this report is the introduction of a novel HELIOCOMM system that supports the wireless controls in heliostat-based CSP systems by exploiting the next generation networking technology of integrated access and backhaul. Furthermore, the proposed HELIOCOMM system performs an artificial intelligent clustering approach of the heliostats and clusterhead selection and develops an entropy-based routing model to enable the heliostats to communicate with the central station by considering their energy availability and network traffic. Also, towards efficiently exploiting the limited resources in the developed wireless communication system, a resource allocation module is introduced that performs the maximization of the energy efficiency of each heliostat by minimizing its corresponding experienced end-to-end latency to communicate with the central station, while performing an intelligent bandwidth splitting in the access and backhaul wireless links. The overall architecture is presented, and its individual building components are discussed in detail.

Reaction engineering: a lost (and found) art for a decarbonized future [Slides]

The heart (or, perhaps more appropriately, the stomach) of any chemical manufacturing process is the reactor, where chemical and physical transformations occur under precisely controlled conditions. For traditional industrial processes, the design, optimization and operation of chemical reactors are extremely well developed, drawing upon the principles of chemistry, physics, calculus and economics. However, new-age process concepts proposing to use "exotic" reactors and/or sustainable inputs (e.g., renewable carbon resources, electrons, photons, plasma) face a dearth of well documented reaction engineering principles & design practices that eclipses their rapid adoption. This presentation features two vignettes of (the return of) reaction engineering in sustainable process science, first in the valorization of lignin from biomass, and second in understanding multimodal catalyst deactivation in industrial-scale reactors within the Catofin process for propane dehydrogenation. Overall, this seminar seeks to educate student researchers on practical means of advancing laboratory reactor technologies towards commercial practice.

The 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction - state of the art, astrophysics, and perspectives

One of the most important stellar neutron sources is the 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction, which gets activated both during the helium intershell burning in asymptotic giant branch stars and in core helium and shell carbon burning in massive stars. The 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction serves as the main neutron producer for the weak s-process and provides a short but strong neutron exposure during the helium flash phase of the main s-process, significantly affecting the abundances at the s-process branch points. The cross section needs to be known at very low energies, as close as possible to the neutron threshold at E α = 562 keV (Q = −478 keV), but both direct and indirect measurements have turned out to be very challenging, leading to significant uncertainties. Here we discuss the current status of the reaction, including recent and upcoming measurements, and provide a discussion on the astrophysical implications as well as an outlook into the near future.

Synchronic Web Digital Identity: Speculations on the Art of the Possible

As search, social media, and artificial intelligence continue to reshape collective knowledge, the preservation of trust on the public infosphere has become a defining challenge of our time. Given the breadth and versatility of adversarial threats, the best—and perhaps only—defense is an equally broad and versatile infrastructure for digital identity. This document discusses the opportunities and implications of building such an infrastructure from the perspective of a national laboratory. The technical foundation for this discussion is the emergence of the Synchronic Web, a Sandia-developed infrastructure for asserting cryptographic provenance at Internet scale. As of the writing of this document, there is ongoing work to develop the underlying technology and apply it to multiple mission-specific domains within Sandia. The primary objective of this document to extend the body of existing work toward the more public-facing domain of digital identity. Our approach depends on a non-standard, but philosophically defensible notion of identity: digital identity is an unbroken sequence of states in a well-defined digital space. From this foundation, we abstractly describe the infrastructural foundations and applied configurations that we expect to underpin future notions of digital identity.

Automation of debris removal and resurfacing of insulators in terawatt pulsed power systems using state of the art laser technology

The increasing complexity and scale of pulsed power systems necessitate effective maintenance strategies to ensure optimal performance and safety. This report investigates the automation of debris removal and resurfacing of insulators in terawatt pulsed power systems using advanced laser cleaning technologies. The motivation for this research stems from the limitations of current manual cleaning methods, which are labor-intensive and pose health risks due to hazardous materials. The study addresses the problem of surface flashover, a significant issue affecting insulator performance, by evaluating two innovative cleaning techniques: Pulsed Laser Cleaning (PLC) and Flash Lamp Annealing (FLA). Experimental results demonstrate that PLC effectively restores the dielectric strength of Rexolite insulators, while FLA shows limited success. The findings highlight the potential for automated cleaning solutions to enhance safety and efficiency in insulator maintenance, paving the way for future advancements in pulsed power technology.
