Effect of Preparation Conditions of Fe@SiO2 Catalyst on Its Structure Using High-Pressure Activity Studies in a 3D-Printed SS Microreactor

Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) in a 3D-printed stainless steel (SS) microchannel microreactor was investigated using Fe@SiO2 catalysts. The catalysts were prepared by two different techniques: one pot (OP) and autoclave (AC). The mesoporous structure of the two catalysts, Fe@SiO2 (OP) and Fe@SiO2 (AC), ensured a large contact area between the reactants and the catalyst. They were characterized by N2 physisorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis–differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC) techniques. The AC catalyst had a clear core–shell structure and showed a much greater surface area than that prepared by the OP method. The activities of the catalysts in terms of FTS were studied in the 200–350 °C temperature range at 20-bar pressure with a H2/CO molar ratio of 2:1. The Fe@SiO2 (AC) catalyst showed higher selectivity and higher CO conversion to olefins than Fe@SiO2 (OP). Stability studies of both catalysts were carried out for 30 h at 320 °C at 20 bar with a feed gas molar ratio of 2:1. The Fe@SiO2 (AC) catalyst showed higher stability and yielded consistent CO conversion compared to the Fe@SiO2 (OP) catalyst.

Development of a Cure Model for Unsaturated Polyester Resin Systems Based on Processing Conditions

Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) systems are extensively used in composite materials for applications in the transportation, marine, and infrastructure sectors. There are continually evolving formulations of UPRs that need to be evaluated and optimized for processing. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) provides valuable insight into the non-isothermal and isothermal behavior of UPRs within a prescribed temperature range. In the present work, non-isothermal DSC tests were carried out between temperatures of 0.0 °C and 250 °C, through different heating and cooling ramp rates. The isothermal DSC tests were carried out between 0.0 and 170 °C. The instantaneous rate of cure of the tested temperatures were measured. The application of an autocatalytic model in a calculator was used to simulate curing behaviors under different processing conditions. As the temperature increased from 10 °C up to 170 °C, the rate of cure reduced, and the heat of reaction increased. The simulated cure behavior from the DSC data showed that the degree of cure (α) maximum value of 71.25% was achieved at the highest heating temperature of 85 °C. For the low heating temperature, i.e., 5 °C, the maximum degree of cure (α) did not exceed 12% because there was not enough heat to activate the catalyst to crosslink further.

Bacterial-Retted Hemp Fiber/PLA Composites

The push for sustainability in all facets of manufacturing has led to an increased interest in biomass as an alternative to non-renewable materials. Hemp bast fiber mats were produced from a bacterial retting process, named BFM, as the fiber reinforcement. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of laminating BFM with polylactic acid (PLA) for a composite panel product. Since both BFM and PLA are biodegradable, the resulting BFM-PLA composites will be 100% biodegradable. PLA pallets were processed into thin polymer sheets which served as the matrix. The BFM and PLA plates were laminated in five layers and compression-molded into composite panels. Experiments were conducted on the three BFM-to-PLA ratios (35/65, 45/55, and 50/50). Mechanical properties (tensile and bending properties) and physical properties (thickness swell and water absorption) were tested and compared to the currently commercial sheet molding compound (SMC) from fiber glass. The thermal behavior of the BFM/PLA composites was characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The developed BFM/PLA composite product is a sustainable alternative to existing synthetical fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) that is biodegradable in landfill at the end of life.

Thermodynamic analysis of dilute ternary systems. 1. The Ag-Au-Sn system

The heats of solution of silver and gold in dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys have been determined as a function of alloy composition using liquid metal solution calorimetry. From the values obtained, the various enthalpy interaction parameters in the liquid solutions have been calculated. The results are interpreted in terms of the probably bonding changes taking place between silver, gold and tin atoms.

The polymorphic and mesomorphic behavior of four esters of cholesterol.

The techniques of differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray powder diffractometry, and positron annihilation have been used to study the polymorphic and mesomorphic behavior of the following esters of cholesterol: cholesteryl formate, cholesteryl butyrate, cholesteryl benzoate, and cholesteryl cinnamate. Each of these compounds exhibits a single mesophase of the cholesteric type. The solid phase formed from the melt for each ester was observed to be structurally different from the solid phase obtained from solution. Solvents from which the solution-grown samples were crystallized were as follows: cholesteryl formate and cholesteryl butyrate from acetone, cholesteryl benzoate from benzene, and cholesteryl cinnamate from 2-butanone.

Investigation of KC-135 flight samples solidified in near-zero gravity

An analysis was conducted of three KC-135 flight samples that had been solidified in near-zero gravity. These samples had been generated during near-zero gravity testing of M553 experiment Skylab flight hardware. The samples evaluated were all Star-J Satellite, a cobalt base alloy. The analytical procedures (optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and microhardness) to be use on the Skylab flight samples were optimized and the analytical results are presented.

Avoidance of stress corrosion susceptibility in high strength aluminum alloys by control of grain boundary and matrix microstructure

The relation of microstructure to the mechanical strength and stress corrosion resistance of highest strength and overaged tempers of BAR and 7050 aluminum alloys was investigated. Comparison is made with previously studied 7075 aluminum alloy. Optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry were used to characterize the grain morphology, matrix microstructure, and grain boundary microstructure of these tempers. Grain boundary interparticle spacing was significant to stress corrosion crack propagation for all three alloys; increasing interparticle spacing led to increased resistance to crack propagation. In addition, the fire grain size in Bar and 7050 appears to enhance crack propagation. The highest strength temper of 7050 has a comparatively high resistance to crack initiation. Overall stress corrosion behavior is dependent on environment pH, and evaluation over a range of pH is recommended.
