Effect of hydration on morphology of thin phosphonate block copolymer electrolyte membranes studied by electron tomography

The morphological changes of phosphonate polypeptoid electrolyte membranes, poly-N-(2-ethyl)hexylglycine-block-poly-N-phosphonomethylglycine (pNeh m -b-pNpm n ), in hydrated and dry states were characterized by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and cryogenic electron tomography (cryo-ET). The analysis of 3D tomograms revealed that the pNeh 9 -b-pNpm 9 thin films absorbed a large amount of water, resulting in the formation of membranes that were nearly flat and giant multicompartment vesicles dispersed in the water phase. A simple lamellar phase appeared when the films were dried. In contrast, pNeh 18 -b-pNpm 18 thin films absorbed little water and formed small highly curved unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles. Water was located mainly outside the closely-packed vesicles. When water was removed by drying, the walls of adjacent vesicles collapsed to form honeycomb-like capsules. Here, the changes in domain size reflected changes in chain conformations. The pNpm9 blocks were saturated by water and fully extended, while pNpm 18 blocks were neither saturated by water nor fully extended. In addition, the thicknesses of hydrophobic blocks in the hydrated films of both pNeh 9 -b-pNpm 9 and pNeh 18 -b-pNpm 18 were smaller than those in the dry films, reflecting an increase of the average distance between the neighboring junctions of polypeptoid molecules.

Energetic Copolymers From LLM-105 and Aliphatic Isocyanates

Energetic polymers typically feature fuel-rich backbones with pendant oxidizing explosophores, which are used to modify pressure and temperature characteristics in energetic formulations. However, these pendant explosophores generally increase sensitivity and decrease the thermal stability of the polymer in the condensed phase. Direct polymerization of insensitive high explosives (IHEs) bearing polymerizable functionalities, such as amines, provides a synthetic platform for deriving tunable energetic materials. Here, this work demonstrates the first direct polymerization of the IHE 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) with aliphatic isocyanate comonomers to yield an energetic copolyurea (PUa1) and an energetic copolyurea network (PUa2). 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirm copolyurea synthesis. PUa1 exhibited branching reactions commonly found in polyurea syntheses, and these side reactions were suppressed in PUa2 through use of a polyfunctional isocyanate. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrate the energetic IHE based polyurea preserves the energetic decomposition of the parent monomer LLM-105 in PUa1 (1203 J g −1 ) and PUa2 (687 J g −1 ), albeit with reduced thermal stability with peak decomposition temperatures of 235°C and 233°C, respectively. This work presents a new approach for generating energetic polymers from IHE cores with tunable energetic, thermal, and structural characteristics.

Effects of Copolymer Structure on Enzyme-Catalyzed Polyester Recycling

Polyesters are an omnipresent material used for a variety of applications (e.g., bottles, packaging, textile, windshield), roughly comprising 8% of plastics produced worldwide. Enzymatic recycling is an emerging solution to deal with the increasingly diverse polyesters that are not suitable for mechanical recycling. However, enzyme activity and efficiency are still the limiting factors impeding enzymatic recycling for different plastic waste forms. The effects of thermal and structural properties (e.g., glass transition temperature, crystallinity, specific surface area), which are determined by chemical composition and preprocessing, directly influence enzyme recycling efficiency. This work investigates two extrusion methods (single screw and twin-screw extrusion) to pretreat a range of copolyesters (RPET, PETG, Ecozen, Tritan and PBT) and modify their properties (i.e., glass transition temperature (T g ), crystallinity (%), and molecular weight (M n )). A PET-specific enzyme, leaf-branch compost cutinase (LCC ICCG ), produced from a fed-batch fermentation of Escherichia coli BL21(DE3), was used for the enzymatic depolymerization of different polyesters. Several copolyesters showed improved depolymerization after pretreatment, as measured by rate and amount of monomers produced. Furthermore, those that did not depolymerize were found to have exceptionally high glass transition temperature or percent crystallinity, highlighting the importance of these physical parameters on conversion efficiency.

Mechanically and thermally robust microporous copolymer separators for lithium ion batteries

Next generation, multifunctional separators can enhance energy storage, power, and safety performance of lithium ion batteries but must be simple to fabricate and incorporate with existing roll-to-roll manufacturing. Here, this study presents a strategy to facilely prepare these separators using UV-initiated polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS), wherein microporous polymer separators are fabricated directly from constituent monomers and ethylene carbonate (EC) porogen. This enables a wide compositional design space as co-monomers with specific chemical functionality can be readily incorporated into the PIPS precursor mixture. Herein, 1,4-butanediol diacrylate (BDDA) was copolymerized with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) to increase the acrylate conversion in the photopolymerization and improve mechanical properties. By tuning the ratio of PEGDA and EC, separators with high porosity (41.3%) and effective ionic conductivity (2.09 mS cm –1 ) were prepared. Inclusion of PEGDA was essential to increasing the elastic modulus to > 345 MPa, which is required for cell assembly by roll-to-roll manufacturing. All separators prepared were shown to enable reversible cycling of lithium metal/LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 half-cells for 100 cycles. Unlike conventional polyolefin separators, which were shown to melt at 160 °C and shrink by up to 29.8% at elevated temperatures, the PIPS separators possess exceptional, safety-enhancing thermomechanical properties, undergoing no phase transitions or thermal shrinkage.
