Coupled Neutronic and Thermal Hydraulic Analysis of a Natural Circulation Based Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Using VERA-CS

As part of the work supported by a US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear FY 2020 Voucher, Holtec International subsidiary SMR LLC (hereinafter referred to as Holtec) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory entered into a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) to develop coupled multiphysics core models of the Holtec developed small modular reactor (SMR), SMR-160. The scope of the 1 year project was to use the DOE–developed tool set, VERA, to analyze several aspects of a representative SMR-160 core design. The goals of the project were to perform the code-to-code benchmarking and to provide Holtec with a confirmatory calculations to compare against the results with the codes used in the SMR-160 design, identify and resolve areas of discrepancy between the two models to give Holtec a basis for selecting certain tool and model options, and develop a workflow so that the VERA model could be adapted easily to any future changes in the design of the SMR-160 core. The work proceeded in four phases: 1. Developing the initial VERA model based on Holtec-provided core design information; 2. Comparing VERA results with Holtec-provided calculations for the first five cycles; 3. Developing a VERA transient model based on the prior model; and 4. Training Holtec personnel on VERA and hand-off the developed models. This report summarizes at a high level the completed tasks. Details of the tasks and results are reserved for the full report, which will not be publicly released for 5 years per the terms of the CRADA. The report is titled “Coupled Neutronic and Thermal Hydraulic Analysis of a Natural Circulation Based Small Modular Reactor (SMR) using VERA-CS” and has the ORNL technical report number ORNL/TM 2021/2303 (NFE-20-08305)

Roles of Metal Promoters (Co, Cu, K, Ni, Zn, and Cs) in Microwave-Assisted Methane Dehydroaromatization to Aromatics Over Mo-Supported HZSM-5

Microwave (MW)-assisted methane dehydroaromatization (MDHA) offers methane conversion to more value-added aromatics, thus generating revenue and mitigating the flaring emission. We previously found that Mo/HZSM-5, despite offering higher aromatic yield, experienced rapid deactivation under microwave irradiation. Adding metal promoters is one of the solutions to not only modulate the reaction/deactivation pathways, but potentially modify the heating properties of modified Mo/HZSM-5 under MW-assisted MDHA. In this study, Mo/HZSM-5 was modified with various metal promoters (Co, Cu, K, Ni, Zn, and Cs) and their catalytic performance was assessed and correlated with their physical and chemical properties upon adding metal promoters.

Synthesis and Crystal Structures of Alkali (Na, Rb, Cs) Iron Phosphate Crystals

Three alkali-containing diphosphate crystals of A FeP 2 O 7 (A = Na, Rb, Cs) were synthesized through melt-crystallization. The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. The synthesized diphosphates crystallized within the P 2 1 /c space group, and the structural parameters were compared to literature data of other A FeP 2 O 7 crystals within the P 2 1 /c space group.

CO and CS in the Orion Nebula

The reported observations were made with an 11-m radio telescope. The CO map considered has a peak near the position of the infrared continuum source. There is little correlation between the CO contours and any optical structure. The CO contours show a pronounced north-south orientation. CS was observed as a representative example of a stable molecule with a higher dipole moment than CO. Questions regarding the structure of Orion A are discussed, giving attention to various models.

Collisional excitation of interstellar molecules - Linear molecules CO, CS, OCS, and HC3N

Rates for excitation of CO, CS, OCS, and HC3N by collisions with He atoms and H2 molecules are presented. These have been obtained from extensive theoretical calculations using methods of known reliability. In general, rates necessary for modeling interstellar molecular clouds with kinetic temperatures to 100 K have been included. Methods for fitting these rates in more compact form are discussed.

Kinematics of the CS method for the treatment of molecular collisions

The problem of the quantum treatment of nonreactive collisions of two simple molecules or of an atom and a molecule is considered mathematically. Kinematical structure theorems analogous to the Wigner-Eckart theorem for scalar operators are derived for the transition operator (T-operator) of a two-molecule system, where, in addition to the usual conservation laws, certain additional conservation laws are presumed satisfied in a collision. The additional conservation laws were examined in order to develop a testable approximation scheme (CS method) for the specification of the kinematics of a system of two rigid diatomic molecules. The rand p-helicity basis states for a two-rigid rotor system are defined and unitary transformations established between these and conventional bases. It is found that only questionable criteria exist for testing the on-the-energy-shell matrix of a T(energy) operator for the presence of properties of two of the additional conservation laws.

The origin of CS in comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock 1983d

It is shown that the IUE observations of CS in the atmosphere of comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock 1983d are consistent with its formation by the photodissociation of CS2 released from the nucleus. The observed scale length can be matched by a calculated scale length, which is based on the photochemical lifetime of CS2 at 1 AU and hydrodynamic models of the velocity field in the coma. A flow velocity of about 0.6 km/s is required to fit the data, which is in excellent agreement with recent calculations of the flow regime in the inner coma.

Half-collision analysis of far-wing diffuse structure in Cs-Xe

Laser excitation in the far red wing of the second principal series doublet of Cs mixed with Xe revealed a diffuse structure associated with the 2P(3/2) component. The structure is thought to originate from a reflection type of spectrum between the weakly bound E 2Sigma(1/2) excited state and the X 2Sigma(1/2) repulsive ground state of CsXe.

Using Colored Stochastic Petri Net (CS-PN) software for protocol specification, validation, and evaluation

The specification, verification, validation, and evaluation, which make up the different steps of the CS-PN software are outlined. The colored stochastic Petri net software is applied to a Wound/Wait protocol decomposable into two principal modules: request or couple (transaction, granule) treatment module and wound treatment module. Each module is specified, verified, validated, and then evaluated separately, to deduce a verification, validation and evaluation of the complete protocol. The colored stochastic Petri nets tool is shown to be a natural extension of the stochastic tool, adapted to distributed systems and protocols, because the color conveniently takes into account the numerous sites, transactions, granules and messages.

Physical properties of the OMC-2 and OMC-3 cores from CS and C(18)O observations

We have investigated the properties of the OMC-2 and OMC-3 cores in the Orion giant molecular cloud using high spatial spectral resolution observations of several transitions of the (13)CO, C(18)O, C(S-32) and C(S-34) molecules taken with the SEST telescope. The OMC-2 core consists of one clump (22 solar mass) with a radius of 0.11 pc surrounded by a cluster of 11 discrete infrared sources. The H2 column density and volume density in the center of this clump are 2 x 10(exp 22)/sq cm and 9 x 10(exp 5)/cu cm respectively. From a comparison between physical parameters derived from C(18)O and C(S-32) observations we conclude that the molecular envelope around the core has been completely removed by these sources and that only the very dense gas is left. OMC-3 shows a more complex elongated structure in C(18)O and CS than OMC-2. The C(S-32) and C(S-34) maps show that the denser region can be separated into at least sub-cores of roughly equal sizes (radius approximately equals 0.13 pc), with n(H2) = 6 x 10(exp 5)/cu cm, and a mass of 10 solar mass (from C(S-32)). The very different masses obtained for the central core from C(18)O and C(S-32) (55 and 12 solar mass respectively) indicate that a massive envelope is still present around the very dense sub-cores. We report the first detection of several molecular outflows in OMC-3. The presence of an IRAS source and the first detection of these outflows confirm that star formation is going on in OMC-3. Based on the different physical properties of these regions compared with OMC-1, OMC-2 appears to be in an intermediate evolutionary stage between OMC-1 and OMC-3.

Communication overhead on the Intel Paragon, IBM SP2 and Meiko CS-2

Interprocessor communication overhead is a crucial measure of the power of parallel computing systems-its impact can severely limit the performance of parallel programs. This report presents measurements of communication overhead on three contemporary commercial multicomputer systems: the Intel Paragon, the IBM SP2 and the Meiko CS-2. In each case the time to communicate between processors is presented as a function of message length. The time for global synchronization and memory access is discussed. The performance of these machines in emulating hypercubes and executing random pairwise exchanges is also investigated. It is shown that the interprocessor communication time depends heavily on the specific communication pattern required. These observations contradict the commonly held belief that communication overhead on contemporary machines is independent of the placement of tasks on processors. The information presented in this report permits the evaluation of the efficiency of parallel algorithm implementations against standard baselines.

Multiphase complete exchange on Paragon, SP2 and CS-2

The overhead of interprocessor communication is a major factor in limiting the performance of parallel computer systems. The complete exchange is the severest communication pattern in that it requires each processor to send a distinct message to every other processor. This pattern is at the heart of many important parallel applications. On hypercubes, multiphase complete exchange has been developed and shown to provide optimal performance over varying message sizes. Most commercial multicomputer systems do not have a hypercube interconnect. However, they use special purpose hardware and dedicated communication processors to achieve very high performance communication and can be made to emulate the hypercube quite well. Multiphase complete exchange has been implemented on three contemporary parallel architectures: the Intel Paragon, IBM SP2 and Meiko CS-2. The essential features of these machines are described and their basic interprocessor communication overheads are discussed. The performance of multiphase complete exchange is evaluated on each machine. It is shown that the theoretical ideas developed for hypercubes are also applicable in practice to these machines and that multiphase complete exchange can lead to major savings in execution time over traditional solutions.
