Expendable second stage reusable space shuttle booster. Volume 4: Detail mass properties data

Mass properties data are presented to describe the characteristics of an expendable second stage with a reusable space shuttle booster. The final mass characteristics of the vehicle configurations for three specified payloads are presented in terms of weight, center of gravity, and mass moments of inertia. Three basic subjects are the integrated vehicle system, the expendable second stage, and the booster modifications.

Detailed Test Plan Redundant Sensor Strapdown IMU Evaluation Program

The test plan for a redundant sensor strapdown inertial measuring unit evaluation program is presented. The subjects discussed are: (1) test philosophy and limitations, (2) test sequence, (3) equipment specifications, (4) general operating procedures, (5) calibration procedures, (6) alignment test phase, and (7) navigation test phase. The data and analysis requirements are analyzed.

LF460 detail design final technical report on aircraft support activity

Various studies and analyses that were performed in support of the V/STOL research transport design effort are discussed. The propulsion system specified for these studies was the LF460/YJ97-GE-100 turbotip lift fan. Strong emphasis was placed on achieving low fan noise while maintaining the high thrust/weight capability of the high pressure ratio lift fan system. The work was divided into cycle analysis and performance studies, installation and systems support, acoustic analysis and preliminary or conceptual design studies.

Program for establishing long time flight service performance of composite materials in the central wing structure of C-130 aircraft. Phase 2: Detailed design

The design, fabrication, and evaluation of boron-epoxy reinforced C-130 center wing boxes are discussed. Design drawings, static strength, fatigue endurance, flutter, and weight analyses required for the wing box fabrication are presented. Additional component testing to verify the design for panel buckling and to evaluate specific local design areas are reported.

Photoheliograph thermal concepts study. Volume 2: Detailed analysis

The photoheliograph thermal concepts study which was to define and compare the performance of thermal subsystem concepts for each of three photoheliograph designs oriented toward unique solar observation missions is reported. These design and missions are categorized as: (1) A 150-centimeter photoheliograph for large solar observatory (LSO) missions. This design is intended for multiyear orbital operations as a part of a complement of solar telescopes in a free-flying LSO configuration. (2) A 100-centimeter photoheliograph for shuttle sorties. This design is intended for observation periods of up to 2 weeks while mounted in the cargo bay of the shuttle orbiter vehicle. (3) A 100-centimeter photoheliograph for balloon missions. This design is intended to be a design verification unit and precursor to the orbital flight designs. Mission duration is on the order of a single day at an altitude of approximately 24.4 kilometers. For each of these photoheliograph designs, the basic thermal environments, boundary conditions, and applicable thermal control concepts were defined and the interactions between concepts and environments were determined. A baseline thermal control concept was selected for the three classes of photoheliographs described.

Detailed correlation of type III radio bursts with H alpha activity. I - Active region of 22 May 1970.

Comparison of observations of type III impulsive radio bursts made at the Clark Lake Radio Observatory with high-spatial-resolution cinematographic observations taken at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. Use of the log-periodic radio interferometer makes it possible to localize the radio emission uniquely. This study concentrates on the particularly active region close to the limb on May 22, 1970. Sixteen of the 17 groups were associated with some H alpha activity, 11 of them with the start of such activity.

Detailed mathematical models of a radioisotope thermoelectric generator.

Two new models for the design and performance analysis of RTG's are outlined in this paper. The first model assumes a small-signal transient-type calculational sequence that permits the separation of steady-state operation of the generator from its dynamic behavior. The second model uses a numerical (finite difference) solution of the performance equations of the RTG. Both models enable the investigation of transient and steady-state performance of RTG's. Simplifying assumptions have been kept to a minimum in the new RTG models and these models enable the inclusion of generator end losses, axial temperature gradients and heat interchange between thermoelements and thermal insulation in RTG performance calculations in a self-consistent manner.

Compiler writing system detail design specification. Volume 2: Component specification

The logic modules and data structures composing the Meta-translator module are desribed. This module is responsible for the actual generation of the executable language compiler as a function of the input Meta-language. Machine definitions are also processed and are placed as encoded data on the compiler library data file. The transformation of intermediate language in target language object text is described.

A study of remote sensing as applied to regional and small watersheds. Volume 2: Supporting technical details

The Stanford Watershed Model, the Kentucky Watershed Model and OPSET program, and the NASA-IBM system for simulation and analysis of watersheds are described in terms of their applications to the study of remote sensing of water resources. Specific calibration processes and input and output parameters that are instrumental in the simulations are explained for the following kinds of data: (1) hourly precipitation data; (2) daily discharge data; (3) flood hydrographs; (4) temperature and evaporation data; and (5) snowmelt data arrays. The Sensitivity Analysis Task, which provides a method for evaluation of any of the separate simulation runs in the form of performance indices, is also reported. The method is defined and a summary of results is given which indicates the values obtained in the simulation runs performed for Town Creek, Alabama; Alamosa Creek, Colorado; and Pearl River, Louisiana. The results are shown in tabular and plot graph form. For Vol. 1, see N74-27813.

Detailed comparison of type III radio bursts with H alpha activity. II

Isolated type III radio bursts activity was observed at Clark Lake Radio Observatory in March and the first part of April 1971 to occur in discrete regions of the corona above certain active regions. When these regions were examined under high resolution in H alpha all the type III events appeared to have associated activity in H alpha. The potential coronal magnetic field in these regions appeared to be either open or diverging, whereas the field over a rather active region which did not have radio burst activity was closed in a magnetic arcade. The latter feature has been associated with streamers. Streamers have also been associated with dark filaments. The occurrence of a stable dark filament in an active region appeared to have an inhibiting effect on type III activity. It is suggested that a streamer field configuration is not favorable to the escape of isolated type III exciters.

A detailed investigation of flight buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds

The structural response to aerodynamic buffeting during moderate-to-high-g maneuvers was investigated. Dynamic response data measured during a flight loads program were analyzed to obtain power spectra and rms values of response for 19 sensors mounted on the test aircraft. In this paper, peaks in the power spectra of accelerations measured at the wing tips, center of gravity and pilot's seat, and wing vertical shear, bending moment and torsional moments are correlated with natural vibration modes. The amplitudes of response are compared to show effects of angle of attack, sensor type and location, Mach number, and altitude.
