Confinement of excited states in two-dimensional, in-plane, quantum heterostructures

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are promising candidates for optoelectronic application and quantum information processes due to their inherent out-of-plane 2D confinement. In addition, they offer the possibility of achieving low-dimensional in-plane exciton confinement, similar to zero-dimensional quantum dots, with intriguing optical and electronic properties via strain or composition engineering. However, realizing such laterally confined 2D monolayers and systematically controlling size-dependent optical properties remain significant challenges. Here, we report the observation of lateral confinement of excitons in epitaxially grown in-plane MoSe 2 quantum dots (~15-60 nm wide) inside a continuous matrix of WSe 2 monolayer film via a sequential epitaxial growth process. Various optical spectroscopy techniques reveal the size-dependent exciton confinement in the MoSe 2 monolayer quantum dots with exciton blue shift (12-40 meV) at a low temperature as compared to continuous monolayer MoSe 2 . Finally, single-photon emission (g 2 (0) ~ 0.4) was also observed from the smallest dots at 1.6 K. Our study opens the door to compositionally engineered, tunable, in-plane quantum light sources in 2D semiconductors.

Near field excited state imaging via stimulated electron energy gain spectroscopy of localized surface plasmon resonances in plasmonic nanorod antennas

Continuous wave (cw) photon stimulated electron energy loss and gain spectroscopy (sEELS and sEEGS) is used to image the near field of optically stimulated localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes in nanorod antennas. An optical delivery system equipped with a nanomanipulator and a fiber-coupled laser diode is used to simultaneously irradiate plasmonic nanostructures in a (scanning) transmission electron microscope. The nanorod length is varied such that the m = 1, 2, and 3 LSPR modes are resonant with the laser energy and the optically stimulated near field spectra and images of these modes are measured. Various nanorod orientations are also investigated to explore retardation effects. Optical and electron beam simulations are used to rationalize the observed patterns. As expected, the odd modes are optically bright and result in observed sEEG responses. The m = 2 dark mode does not produce a sEEG response, however, when tilted such that retardation effects are operative, the sEEG signal emerges. Thus, we demonstrate that cw sEEGS is an effective tool in imaging the near field of the full set of nanorod plasmon modes of either parity.

Reduced dynamic complexity allows structure elucidation of an excited state of KRAS G13D

Localized dynamics of RAS, including regions distal to the nucleotide-binding site, is of high interest for elucidating the mechanisms by which RAS proteins interact with effectors and regulators and for designing inhibitors. Among several oncogenic mutants, methyl relaxation dispersion experiments reveal highly synchronized conformational dynamics in the active (GMPPNP-bound) KRAS G13D , which suggests an exchange between two conformational states in solution. Methyl and 31 P NMR spectra of active KRAS G13D in solution confirm a two-state ensemble interconverting on the millisecond timescale, with a major Pγ atom peak corresponding to the dominant State 1 conformation and a secondary peak indicating an intermediate state different from the known State 2 conformation recognized by RAS effectors. High-resolution crystal structures of active KRAS G13D and KRAS G13D -RAF1 RBD complex provide snapshots of the State 1 and 2 conformations, respectively. We use residual dipolar couplings to solve and cross-validate the structure of the intermediate state of active KRAS G13D , showing a conformation distinct from those of States 1 and 2 outside the known flexible switch regions. The dynamic coupling between the conformational exchange in the effector lobe and the breathing motion in the allosteric lobe is further validated by a secondary mutation in the allosteric lobe, which affects the conformational population equilibrium.

Coupled nuclear–electronic decay dynamics of O2 inner valence excited states revealed by attosecond XUV wave-mixing spectroscopy

Multiple Rydberg series converging to the $O_2^+$ c $^{4}Σ^{-}_{u}$ state, accessed by 20-25 eV extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light, serve as important model systems for the competition between nuclear dissociation and electronic autoionization. The dynamics of the lowest member of these series, the $3sσ_g $ state around 21 eV, has been challenging to study owing to its ultra-short lifetime (<10 fs). Here, we apply transient wave-mixing spectroscopy with an attosecond XUV pulse to investigate the decay dynamics of this electronic state. Lifetimes of 5.8 ± 0.5 fs and 4.5 ± 0.7 fs at 95% confidence intervals are obtained for v = 0 and v = 1 vibrational levels of the 3s Rydberg state, respectively. A theoretical treatment of predissociation and electronic autoionization finds that these lifetimes are dominated by electronic autoionization. The strong dependence of the electronic autoionization rate on the internuclear distance because of two ionic decay channels that cross the 3s Rydberg state results in the different lifetimes of the two vibrational levels. The calculated lifetimes are highly sensitive to the location of the 3s potential with respect to the decay channels; by slight adjustment of the location, values of 6.2 and 5.0 fs are obtained computationally for the v = 0 and v = 1 levels, respectively, in good agreement with experiment. Overall, an intriguing picture of the coupled nuclear-electronic dynamics is revealed by attosecond XUV wave-mixing spectroscopy, indicating that the decay dynamics are not a simple competition between isolated autoionization and predissociation processes.

Excited-state structural conformations of Fe-amido photosensitizers revealed by picosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy and modelling were used to characterize distortions in the photo-generated quintet state of Fe sensitizers bearing hybrid N-heterocycle/amido ligands. Photoexcitation induces a 0.10–0.35 Å Fe–N elongation that is smaller for d(Fe–N amido ) compared to d(Fe-N heterocycle ), suggesting that the partial expansion of the Fe–N bonds involving the N-heterocyclic ligands is critical to the rapid population of ligand-field states.
